Aren't the sharp edged flakes what gives you grip? When I hand wipe oil spills on my garage floor, it's definitely not smooth enough for me to want to walk on it barefoot. I don't find my floor slippery when it's wet.

I got the garage done earlier this year by Zone Garage. The end result was excellent and the guy did a great job, enough so that it generated a few referrals from my neighbors and nearby friends.

One of my neighbors that showed interest wanted the work done for their pool deck and they were reassured that the resulting product would be non-slip. The scope of the job required a couple of days of work, so they decided to head out of town while the crew worked on their pool.

You can probably guess what happened next. The pool deck was covered will the same slippery top coat as my garage, there were sharp edges on random spots on the deck, and parts of the deck had more clear finish than other spots which made it even more slippery than other areas. Effectively this made the pool unusable given all these hazards, and you can imagine how upset my neighbors were when they came back to this.

I'm not sure what their next steps are at this point, and I don't want to insert myself into this by asking.

Both parties are stupid. The installer for saying it was going to be non-slip, and your neighbor for believing them. If you look up garage epoxy it is one of the primary complaints from people who have it, that it can be slightly slippery when wet. You'd think that would immediately stop anyone from even going down this path...

I was in between putting down an epoxy coating or Swisstrax, the thing that tipped me over the edge was just being able to work in the garage, spilling oil etc. Without having to worry that it was just gathering under the swisstrax. I'd rather be able to wash it down quickly or sweep it, than have all the dirt hidden underneath the tiles and have to fuck around and lift up the floor once a year to clean it. So I'll be going with an Epoxy.

I've watched a couple videos, seems straightforward enough, scarify the surface, make sure its clean (acid etch certain areas where oil may already be on the surface), and then throw product down on it. Looking for quotes now, but for $6 a sf I'll probably DIY. Cause I got an almost 700SF garage so I am not spending $4000 on this. Maybe because its a larger garage it will cost slightly less per SF?

Zone Garage offers solutions specifically for outdoor / poolside surfaces - you can see it in the link below. I also edited my original post for clarity.

I presume this is the only product that was being considered in their scope of work since I can't imagine anyone wanting a surface can become slippery near their pool (they wouldn't have considered it unless the surface was non-slip), plus it's the duty of the professional to only offer solutions that are safe for the intended area.

I forgot to mention this in my previous post, but the person that scoped the work originally wasn't present when the job was being performed, so it's possible miscommunication might've happened there.

In my garage the flakes are flat on the ground and are covered with a layer of clear coating. There's a bit of grip when it's dry, but it does get slippery when wet. I often walk into my garage barefoot or with socks without a problem when it's dry.

I walk barefoot on my mine all the time. My garage was slippery for the first year but has since lost that. It looks new, I vacuum my garage monthly and wash it usually at the end of each summer
