Nanaimo RCMP shut down illegal racing and stunt driving site at Duke Point

From what I know hundreds of people use to show up every sunday.

Police in Nanaimo shut down an area at Duke Point used for drag racing and drifting.

According to an RCMP press release, the Nanaimo RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit, with help from other police units, “swooped in” Sept. 13 and impounded 10 vehicles and issued 30 violation tickets along with 23 notice-and-orders for various vehicle defects and 11 inspection orders to drivers of vehicles police deemed unsafe to be on roadways.

The roadway was closed for about four hours while police seized vehicles, issued tickets and dispersed a crowd of people in the area.

“Approximately 100 people were in attendance and no criminal charges were laid by officers with respect to their behaviour,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in the release. “Stunting and drag racing on roadways is a dangerous practice and will not be allowed or tolerated by the Nanaimo RCMP.”

The enforcement was the result of ongoing issues at the site where the city had already installed traffic calming measures to dissuade the activities, which had generated dozens of complaints from workers in the industrial area nearby and from Gabriola Island residents over noise levels.

“Various enforcement actions over the years have failed to stop the activities,” O’Brien said. “Unfortunately, these efforts did not work.”

The investigation is continuing as police expect participants to set up at an alternate location. Anyone with information about where this illegal activity is expected is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.

I used to go years ago on Fri/Sat night. I was amazed that people started doing burnouts/drifting/racing in broad daylight as well. Police have been looking the other way for decades.

With that video I can’t help but wonder if they’re had a plain clothes officer on scene filming. Especially since they impounded so many vehicles they must of witnessed excessive speed during multiple races.

People where posting video's and photo's all over social media. I remember last year getting off the ferry and the highway was full of smoke. look to the left and through a fence I could see someone doing donuts.

Ya gotta give it to car people to find places that are generally out of the way to do this but all it takes is one inexperienced idiot with a 500HP car to plow an entire crowd out and make a mess.

Back in 2014 or something there was an RS spring meet (the infamous one with diesel trucks ripping up asphalt etc) I had my brand new car parked. I heard some stupid shit so decided to go check. It was some fucking mustang doing donuts in the Spanish banks lot inches from my car (no one else parked next to it) pelting it with rocks and debris. I ran as fast as I could and started screaming at the idiot driver.

Kudos to whatever fucboi it was, he found me in the crowd later and apologized but I was pissed

It's going to take some convincing to make me believe a bloated barge is good at anything other than hammering down the straights. That may beat other cars at some tracks in overall time but it's not what I would consider interesting to do.

*granted I'm the kind of person that has zero interest in straight line speed in a car. No matter what I've been in I've never found it appealing.

It's a 4 door sedan not a 2 seat sports car.
