As a refresher, the trade with LA was:
VAN: Toffoli
LA: Tim Schaller, Tyler Madden, 2020 second-round pick and a conditional 2022 fourth-round pick.
The conditional 2022 fourth-round pick was based on Toffoli re-signing with the Canucks.

Toffoli was Benning’s job preservation insurance to maintain having a good shot at making the playoffs when Boeser got injured.
He was a somewhat expensive rental that happened to have fit in and paid off more than anticipated. If it weren’t flat cap year Toffoli would’ve stayed IMO.

7.9m remaining with pending contracts for Virtanen + Guadette + the fact we need at least one more right defencemen tells you exactly why we didn't sign Tofolli. It's a simple numbers game, Benning isn't as dumb as some of you make him out to be.
7.9m - 3m for JV - 2m for AG = 2.9m cap remaining. The fact is we weren't gonna sign any of the UFAs unless some of the bad contracts got moved
