wheres the line between cultural appropriation and thoughtful recognition? seems like a pretty flimsy line like a ribbon blowing in the breeze depending on who wants to be offended at the time.
i also like how it was someone from manitoba speaking for the coast salish on how it was appropriating their culture. "you should be offended by what someone else is doing because im offended by it. shut up and let me talk for you"

Frankly i'm not a fan of anything of the native traditions etc. thats brought into the Canucks presentation etc.
However, i'd say over the years and especially recently it seems like aborignal culture has been brought into the game and the organization more and more whether it be a pre-game video, or in-house guests, etc. Hell, Finn bangs a drum that was given to them by some chief if i'm not mistaken.
Seems to me they have been pretty inclusive and pretty acknowledging in their approach in the past, and this sentiment is by some outsider from 2 provinces over that has no gauge as to their overall engagement within that community.

But this really does seem like a blatant ripoff of an iconic art piece without credit being given. In this one case, it's definitely the right thing to scrap the design and do a new one, either with an actual FN artist, or go another direction entirely.
In the 90's none of this would have been heard about. That's not a good thing.

Do you mean the mask or canuck logo? The mask, fine, it is a copy of someones art. Although that art is a public art installation and the picture being on the mask is more to honor that, than steal it.
As for the canuck logo, again, that was picked to honor the native history of the area but is an original drawing in the spirit of the style. So fuck them. What's next, a Cree from out east being upset the inukshuk was a symbol of the Olympics?

He probably only had 1, maybe 2 years left in him anyways. Missing a year of hockey as it is at his age is basically career-ending, let alone due to a heart condition.

It IS cultural misappropriation and was an obvious blunder in the context of todays attention placed on these issues. Loved the art as a West Coaster, but cringed to think of a white dude from Sask-ratch-my-bum wearing it.
Listen, I'm a white guy.. and although I think it was thoughtful that Holtby went with the Thunderbird logo I think it should obviously have been commissioned from an indigenous artist. So easily avoidable as a controversy.
Anyway, I've always disliked the Orca logo - bring back the Spaghetti Skate (SS). No one can deny how awesome the Canucks look in the black SS uniforms!!!

You guys realize the mask painting is fairly specialized and there are like 3 guys who do every goalie in the league right? I’m sure it wouldn’t be practical at all to try and coordinate with Somone to do part of the mask and the Somone else finish it. If that was the case he likely wouldn’t have even tried to pay homage to the Thunderbird to begin with.

I think it’s going to be:
1) getting permission to use an existing design (really any artist should know this)
2) working in consultation with an indigenous artist for the design of indigenous art elements
I would expect that Gunnarsson will still be the one painting and finishing the mask.

Bigger story is whether NHL teams in Canada can play in their respective cities or whether they have to go to a US city in 2021 like the Raptors and Blue Jays!

LeBrun reports the issue involving Canadian teams over health protocols in certain provinces is still not resolved, but the hope is to resolve it by Monday. TSN Senior Hockey Reporter Frank Seravalli reports that if all parties are unable to sort out the details, the options for the seven Canadian teams include an Edmonton hub city bubble or moving to the United States for the season.
