I’m not happy with some decisions but what you have had him do with this situation? Tanev signed for way too long and way too much $$$ he plays like half the season on average every year and his corsi was massively bumped up by Hughes last season Calgary is going to be hamstring in 3 years on both deals and they’re not going anywhere in the playoffs because their forward group minus Tkachuk doesn’t show up to play.
He made bad deals on the bottom 6 guys but it’s pretty bad luck who knew Sutter was going to come here and be injured more than his entire career or that Ericsson would shit the bed so badly... easy to say in retrospect. I still think Roussel is a good signing he needs to play with Bo though... Beagle shouldn’t have been signed at all so that’s one I would never have done.

even if he doesnt sign anyone its good for the kids to play and develop
besides he'll have some cap space which he can weaponize for teams needing/wanting to unload ie Tampa..
and if he does absolutely nothing this year then he's in a comfortable position financially heading in to next year to resign Petey and Huggy

Retrospect?
At the time of said deals many people were legitimately concerned about the long term cap ramifications. Turns out it is all playing out as anticipated.
RFA’s have walked, assets were lost, cap alleviation did not occur.

We're not going to win the cup next year. I'm happy with whatever they can do to get the most experience for our young players while setting us up for better signings in the future.

Just enjoy what they put on for you, you have no say in who gets signed, traded, bought out, etc. Most of us don't know how things really work between teams, how to manage the cap, how to deal with players who don't play up to expectations that you're now stuck with. It's not that bad. If the Canucks GM was REALLY bad, you'd know. Messier will be here to save the team |

Only reason I'm not pissed is because I foresaw Canucks taking a step back this upcoming season. But for the long term, this isn't bad.
We need to wait out for some of the bad contracts to end. A soft reset.
As long as smart moves are made for 2021-22, then I can wait. Not sure if GMJB will still be here though. lol

Honestly, the team lives or die on the performance of the main core guys in petey, boeser, Miller, bo and Hughes. Of all the free agents we lost, marky is the hardest one to lose. But do you want to run into another expansion draft issue like Pittsburgh? Plus you can give that much money out to markstrom for that many years especially with demko coming along.
I think majority ppl here agrees our backend needs upgrading. I think the entire right side actually lol. Our d couldn’t play the same level as Vegas. We need change.
Sucks to lose Tanev and markstrom as they’re the last memories of players linked to the good times of 2011 era.

RFA’s have walked, assets were lost, cap alleviation did not occur. | Who knew the cap was going flat from COVID... be specific: what RFA’s walked? and what assets were lost? Maybe you have legit beefs but just sounds like opinionated ranting when you say it with nothing to back it up...
The “you’re part of the problem” comment above doesn’t make any sense whatsoever... if skinnypupp all the way over in HK says he hates Benning does Benning get fired suddenly? Lol

I guess the Canucks can only hope for more of the young prospects to come up and play well enough to stay in the lineup to gain more exp. Scratch some of over paid bottom 6 players.

I'm pretty sure Benning was willing to let Tanev and Stetcher go if it meant landing OEL. I'm also not sure why some people are all up in arms about losing our UFA's. It wasn't a secret during last season that the roster was going to look a lot different next season due to the cap. Throw in Covid and a flat cap it became pretty inevitable

But then this made me laugh, lol
Lots of action still to be had in the trade market
Also, some players are waiting for the dominoes to fall (Hall and Pietrangelo) before making their decisions

Markstrom, Tanev and Stecher will be missed, but their time was up. I think we'll be absolutely fine this upcoming season. Guys like Rafferty, Juolevi and Rathbone will just need to step up. Also plenty of D still available like Vatanen, and we've been tied to Cernak for a few weeks here.
Excited that we have Holtby to be a veteran presence for Demko, along with being expansion bait. Would've lost Demko if Markstrom stayed.

Imagine Benning pull something out of his ass. Able to drop some salary and sign Pietrangelo to replace Tanev.

I just read that Virtanen has filed for abritration. Imagine the amount of material they'll have to roast this kid during that meeting
If he's looking to get $3mil i'd seriously think about walking away from that decision.

i looked it up, JV won't be getting awarded $4.5+ Quote:
In certain circumstances a team can walk away from an arbitration award, and the player becomes a UFA. Players cannot. Only player-elected arbitration comes with walk-away rights for the team. Teams can also walk away from the second year of two-year awards, which makes the player a UFA at that time.
Only awards higher than $4,538,958 carry walk-away rights in this offseason.
For this season only, the CBA MOU provides a special process for when teams exercise their walk-away rights on a one-year award. The player may, within four days, elect to agree to an SPC with the team on the same terms the team had offered in their arbitration brief.
For example: Ryan Pulock elects arbitration. He asks for $7.5 million and the Islanders offer $5 million. The arbitrator awards him $6.25 million, and the Islanders decide to exercise their walk-away rights. Pulock can, as long as the team elected a one-year term, essentially demand a contract for $5 million instead of becoming a UFA.

I think the Canucks are managing their cap based on the assumption he's going to get $3M
