Cars are so fucking ugly now. I saw the new Mustang in a commercial today and threw up a little into my mouth
I like the Bronco but overall... Cars are just so ugly, like they don't want people buying them or something |

Feels like this is a transition period for almost all manufacturers
However..feels like it may take 2, and even 3 generations for some companies to get into whatever the next phase may be

What makes it even worse for me, is that the ugly ass grill on the front isn't even a real intake. It's a FAKE ugly grill.
Then there's the lucite drive select and Idrive knob. |

You can blame safety and fuel economy regulations. All cars pretty much have the same standard shapes

Seriously, they need to ditch this design principle that base on the grill. It's a FUCKING EV! There is nothing that needs that air to cool off. As a matter of fact, you want the front to be as smooth as possible to minimize drag. And if you are going to make it smooth, don't do a faux grill...
I'm sure they can maintain the iconic BMW Kidney by moving it somewhere else and become a NEW icon. Kinda ICE BMW: Kidney grill. EV BMW: Kidney something else.

Too many companies, legacy ICE makers and pure EV player like NIO, BYD, XPENG... etc have the same problem.
They have/hire people with strong exp. and knowledge about making ICE cars. Worse, their C-suites are all mostly from ICE background.
What you end up with is a whole bunch of cars that were either sharing design/manufacturing/parts with ICEs or have a close relation to it.
They are so constrained by their understanding on cars (which are ICE based) that it prevents them to do things from a perspective suitable for EV. And EVs... except they do the same thing and have 4 wheels, they are closer to smartphones in our pockets than ICE cars.
Like him or not, it takes someone like Elon Musk, who has no ICE background whatsoever to design EVs that have some appeal to the general public. He focuses more on a balance of form/function/value for an EV and yet not limited to certain stereotyping. The Cybertruck is a perfect example of how to do an EV pickup truck. If Tesla had gone the "typical" pickup design, it'd have come up with something that has less range, less performance and higher price. Instead, he gave up on the traditional design, came up with a way to be tough and minimal cost (frame is casted with no paint required on top).

With EV, you don't have the engine anywhere anymore. The entire front/rear is a crumple zone.
EVs no longer need to resemble to ICE cars because they can satisfy the safety regulations as well as cooling/aerodynamic by other means... often easier than their ICE counterparts. (low center of gravity, empty front/rear section).
The only reason they are still designing EVs that look pretty much like an ugly ICEs is not because of safety/aero consideration. It's that they are playing it safe and firmly believe that the market would prefer that way.
However, if that statement were true, all cars today should still look like a horse carriage.
People often don't know what they want until they are presented with an option.
Think smartphone... ever since the original iPhone, phones looked completely different than dumb phones... but no one ever complained that they should go back to how dumb phones or rotary phone look like. Any phonemaker who failed to adapt in time (Nokia, Sony Ericsson anyone?) are now part of history.
The move to EV should be treated as a blank canvas where companies can rethink what really matter and focus on those.
Cybertruck is going to the toughest mofo on truckland because they went with the first principle thinking... how to make a truly tough truck? And you end up with exoskeleton that can stop bullets with no paint job at all. One can drive that think through bushes and the toughest terrain and it wouldn't look much different from before and after. Because there is no paint to scratch off and no panel to dent.

So what would a "grounds up" EV look like then? Really long and low to the ground? A giant donut with a seat in the middle? What are you thinking of here?
