Vancouver City Council approves tolls into downtown, Broadway

Probably still lots of holes to jump through until it actually happens

Reading dailyhive is like reading theonion

danned 11-17-2020 09:39 PM

are they dumb?

Hehe 11-17-2020 09:47 PM

If this really goes through... GG landlords in those areas.

!LittleDragon 11-17-2020 09:59 PM

I was going to say, I haven't been downtown in years ever since those bike lanes went in making it a pain in the ass to drive there. But I'll be pissed if this drives all the Lions Gate traffic over to the Ironworkers.

Teriyaki 11-17-2020 10:26 PM

Don't they have no legal jurisdiction to impose this sort of thing and all transportation is under the MOT, a Provincial Entity?

To pass this during a pandemic, when business traffic patterns are already changing significantly and the downtown core is hollowing out dangerously, what goofballs are running the show?

68style 11-17-2020 11:01 PM

I don't live in Vancouver, but I think it's a pretty unanimous opinion that Kennedy Stewart has thus far been one of the only mayors that could have possibly made anyone miss Gregor.

Dbone 11-18-2020 05:30 AM

It seems like a bit of a long shot.

I'd be surprised if they can toll highway 99 and 1a without having the province (and maybe federal government for 1a?) sign off on it. The province on the other hand will be pressured by all the other local municipalities to not let this happen.

But who knows. Everyone is desperate to collect as much tax as possible after taking such a big hit from Covid.

CivicBlues 11-18-2020 06:52 AM

Remember this in 2022 and vote every one of these idiots out in the next muni election. Esp Christine Boyle.

yray 11-18-2020 08:29 AM

waiting for DTSS aka yaletown

underscore 11-18-2020 08:43 AM

Thabks Vancouver, now the idiots up here who keep pretending Kelowna is a big city want to add it too.

320icar 11-18-2020 09:14 AM

I haven’t driven into Vancouver since the VI thing started thanksgiving 2018, and I don’t plan to start any time soon, let alone the “downtown core”. Just another reason to call it a shithole lol (apparently an unpopular opinion)

trollface 11-18-2020 09:20 AM

Oh look, they want more money.

So surprised.

They said that it's going to start from Burrard to Clark dr and from West 16th Street to lions gate.

Good, we don't need more people clogging up the streets.

Euro7r 11-18-2020 10:25 AM

Their reason is so called "green initiative to reduce climate change".

Oh look outside, it's pissing rain 8 month of the year, where are the cyclists on the bike lanes LOL

snowball 11-18-2020 08:20 PM

I drive downtown/broadway fairly often for a non-commuter to go to some of my favourite businesses.

Well, guess I'll have to find places closer to home now. So I guess their plan worked? Fewer businesses and traffic downtown?

iambuRnz 11-18-2020 08:50 PM

There better be some sort of exemptions. I drop my wife off to work 5 days a week at the hospital.

lol you are exactly the demographic they're targeting.

But this'll get struck down so quick. They literally don't have the jurisdiction.

whitev70r 11-18-2020 09:05 PM

I can see it now. This regime passes it, sets up the cameras and infrastructure to toll you. Next slate of Council campaigns on cancelling tolls. City wastes a billion dollars on setting it up and collects $100 K in tolls before selling off equipment on Able Auctions.

I am sure that they will exempt ppl with EV. That's how it is in London.

donk. 11-18-2020 10:18 PM

Dont worry guys, the city will spend several million developing this project

Then the democrats will cancel the whole thing like the massey tunnel

Step 3 is missing

Step 4 is profit?

twitchyzero 11-18-2020 10:38 PM

not sure why no one's covering this except dailyhive...

StylinRed 11-19-2020 01:25 AM

So they'll bend to anti maskers and not mandate masks at city buildings, but they'll piss everyone off with this bcuz they think it'll mean more $ there's no need to go downtown anymore, great shopping, restaurants, attractions elsewhere

You're right. I didn't even see it that way. I've been driving her to work as I don't want her taking the bus as much as possible since the pandemic.

Still, even without her, I still have to work downtown as some of our jobsites are located in downtown.
