Dyno testing fuels - Big difference between Shell 91 and Chevron 94
 

Interesting test done on a stock Audi S4.

Compared to Shell 91, Chevron 94 made 35 WHP more. Washington Chevron 92 made 40 WHP more than the Shell 91 gas. Esso 91 did the same as Shell 91.

Woah. I've been running Shell 91 in my Harley for a few years, with the odd fill at Chevron with their 94. I never felt much difference, but I think I may switch over to Chevron more often on my big block. Thanks for sharing.

From my years of tuning my focus ST/RS and doing datalogs, I’ve found my cars hated shell 91. They love chevron 91, but 94 was too inconsistent. Some tanks would be fine, others would actually pull timing on the top end. So I just stuck with chev 91.

Recently filled with co-op 91 and my car wasn’t happy

My Camaro gets the Chevron 94 as the manual states that 93 octane and above is recommended despite it being an NA engine.

I use Chevron over Shell because they are closer to me and there is the Journie reward point which reduces the gas price by 7 cents once you fill up enough. I don't have Air Miles so I can't take advantage of that at Shell.

I've been running Costco 91 in my GTI, but I might take a flier on Chevron 94 if it's improved. My Verossa pinged more on the old Chev 94 than it did on Shell 91.

In the past, there are times when I've found Shell V-Power to subjectively feel more powerful than Chevron 94 and vice versa, but Esso 91 has always make the engine feel like shxt LOL~

I am absolutely not questioning the result that Adam got there. But it does make me wonder -- is Chevron 94 always / usually performing better than Shell V-Power? or is it only just this these few times when he is testing that Shell totally dropped the ball?

The fact that shell 91 is 28 cents more than regular is mi d boggling

I noticed all premiums went up earlier this year, I think around the beginning of summer. Here on central Vancouver Island, Shell went from $0.20/L to $0.23/L above regular while virtually every other brand went up from $0.16-$0.18/L to $0.20/L.

A couple of months ago, premium dropped everywhere except Shell it seems which is still $0.23/L above regular while Chevron 91, for example, is $0.16/L. Chevron 94 is now cheaper than Shell 91 here.

On top of that bullshit, they also reduced the amount of Air Miles you get (from 10 AM per 25L fill to 2 AM per 10L) and they dropped the discount on my corporate Shell card from -$0.06/L to -$0.03/L. If you assume an equivalent cash value of $0.105/AM, went from a $0.102/L discount to a $0.051/L discount (half), which doesn’t even make up the cost difference between other TopTier 91s now.

At the end of the year, they are also going to further drop the Airmiles earning amount since the automatic Shell Go+ program will expire if you didn't fill up often enough at Shell since Sept (when the program came into being). Since I've been WFH, I am not driving nearly as much as I was before, and there is no way I'd be able to re-qualify for the Shell Go+ program with the bonus miles it gives.

Time to switch to Chevron, I guess?

When covid started and the gas prices dropped E85 was 69c in Aldergrove

How about BC Shell 91 vs BC Chevron 91?

I still fill up Shell on a regular basis, for some reason my engines run noticeably smoother with it but haven't really noticed a difference in power.

I'd say there isn't even a contest between these two.

I was feeling extra cheap 2 tanks ago, and put some Chevron 91 into my car instead of its usual Shell V-Power or Chevron 94 diet. Holy mackerel the engine started feeling soft and lathargic soon after the fill up, and while I can't hear any pinging, it definitely felt like the ECU was pulling timing.

I noticed some difference with my N52 back in spring (because Chevron was offering a $0.50/L discount for healthcare workers and there was no way I wasn’t going to take advantage of $0.46/L premium fuel).

Haven’t really noticed much of a difference since moving to the Civic with an L15B7 but that’s primarily been since the fall and I haven’t done much spirited driving since the price gap expanded. I’ve been alternating between the two just to keep my GoPlus active for next year.

I wonder when he did this and if some of the fuel tested was the winter blend of fuel. Or if some were and some weren't.

April 15 - Sept 15 is should be the approximate dates you will receive summer fuel.

I assume this was recorded few months ago and either he or the dyno shop is aware of the different blends?!

I've seen a bunch of back and forth about Shell vs Chevron over the years, I've tried both and my car feels best with Chevron 94. But more than once I've gotten bad tanks of fuel from Chevron. I can only assume it was actually 87 by how badly it made the car run. If Shell is more consistent I'll definitely switch because I'll gladly take a slight dip in power to avoid having to limp around for 300km trying not to break something.

I didn't find his vid informative at all. It's like something we all knew all along. Of course Chev 94 mixed with e85 is going to yield the most power. Also we already all know shell 91, Esso 91 sucks. I'm just pissed he didn't test Chev 91. Chev 91 has always been my gas of choice for knock resistance, even compared to Chev 94, Chev 91 is better for me.
