Oh. I didn't realize it WASN'T GS8 until your post. I was quite curious considering it is about the opposite of the 25+ year old stuff he loves

I took a spirited drive to Squamish a week ago with the Model X Long Range and set regen to standard on the way there and set to low on the way back just to feel what differences were. Going there was amazing. I might have had to touch the friction brakes five times on the way there but regen was strong enough to set the rotation of the vehicle in tight corners. Deceleration is equivalent to normal braking in traffic to a red light. In high speed corners, regen had just the right amount of deceleration control to literally “trail brake” through to apex then power out hard. There was very minimal upset to the chassis thanks for low centre of gravity and the throttle control that feels equivalent to turbo vs NA ICE but in this scenario, comparing NA ICE to EV.

On the way back with regen set to low, I immediately felt like I had to use the friction brakes before corners when I was approaching them moderate aggressively. Low regen on a Tesla is somewhat like engine braking at 3000-5000 RPM with a 6 cylinder. The times when I needed to rapidly slow down I could really tell I was hauling a 5500lbs vehicle down in speed with the friction brakes but they are big enough not to make you feel like you won’t decelerate in time.

1/3 of the way into going back I set regen back to standard. The experience is far better and the control with one foot is like left foot braking with one foot. There is an amazing level of trail brake control and being able to widen or tighten rotation without delay is unlike what my E46 M3 can achieve. It’s quite a different feeling that cannot be replaced with any ICE once you can trust and grasp how an electric drivetrain operates. The only thing I miss with a Tesla is the sound an ICE makes as it powers out of apex. But it’s not bad with this car because it just uses brute electron force to torque your way to happiness.

When you brake in a Tesla with the brake pedal, does it not ramp up regen until it's maxxed out, then put down the anchors with the friction brakes?

Or is low regen vs standard regen drive so differently and you brake harder in low regen that you end up using the friction brakes?

Friction brakes are completely independent of regen.

Regen happens from the electric motors reversing polarity so as you ease off throttle, regeneration gets stronger and stronger for one pedal driving so long as you set it that way. When you need to stop harder than regen can in either standard or low, that’s when you use friction brakes to assist.

In the city you’ll use friction brakes for those surprise moments to slow the vehicle down quickly, for example, yellow lights or someone cutting in front of you and slowing down quicker than regen can.

A problem with regen vs friction is a majority of drivers will barely use friction brakes causing them to rust or wear out prematurely. The term “use it or lose it” comes to mind. My driving style I don’t need to worry about that. I still use friction brakes when I’m using the fun pedal to unnecessarily accelerate quicker than ever required. LOL

How long does the regen friction material last? It doesn't seem like it would last very long as it's used so much but I don't know much about electric vehicles.

The friction material comes from magnets, except it’s not friction. Just like your alternator has drag... except different... except the same, except different....

Except the same. I just assume a Tesla motor doesn’t use brushes. Lol.

With Toyota, when you use the regular brake pedal it ramps up regen first, then throws down the anchors once you exceed the regen threshold.

It sounds like Tesla's brake pedal only actuates the friction brakes and does nothing for changing regen?

Correct. The throttle pedal changes regen as you ease off. Fully off for max regen which can bring you to a comfy stop. Partially off to vary regen/deceleration. It’s nice to drive in the city that way. Throttle placement makes speed control very linear feeling.

Hmmmmm.....

Oh interesting. I always assumed it basically worked like a giant brushed electric motor. Cool!
