Always wondered, how practical is it to drive a car (Any car really) in HK vs taking transit. Roads always look super tight and packed, and parking seems like it would put trying to park downtown van during fireworks look like a cakewalk.

Definitely not practical. Cars themselves are basically taxed 100%, gas is expensive, but even that's pennies compared to car parking spaces... and parking spaces are small.

Roads are actually okay. You can actually speed in a few areas, avoiding and slowing down for traffic cameras when you know where they are. We do have speed traps but less random cops that pull you over on the street.

The other thing I find driving there is that the drivers are much more predictable, so you don't really come across clueless drivers that make ridiculous maneuvers or exhibit random behavior. In some warped way I find it easier driving in the city there than in Vancouver - no bikes, no clueless drivers, pedestrians yield to you - and you get to less accessible parts (by public transit) of the city way faster. It is expensive to operate a car there though.

^ That's mostly because those that are driving want to drive. Whereas here we kinda have to. A shitty transit system gets more people into cars.

It's more dangerous for pedestrians in Vancouver because there are idiots rolling through red lights and stop signs to make a turn. Vehicular traffic is more predictable in Hong Kong because you can't move on a red.

I live close to the subway. it takes 10 minutes to go to work cost me $1.5 travelling back and forth, but if I drive to work will take 15 minutes and $25 for parking lol

Insurance itself, maybe. But we also have to pay registration fee based on the size of the engine of the car yearly. Also for older cars like mine we get the government inspection each year (kinda like the old aircare mixed with mandatory VI)

That is true, for the first years they came out in HK they were basically tax free since the government was pushing for EVs. After 2018? You have to pay tax but the tax is dramatically reduced and also you need a traditional ICE to trade in

Interesting tibit from my car groups here; this was the total amount of new vehicles registered in April 2021. Teslas obviously sell liek hotcakes here at #1, whats interesting is Benz is #2 and BM is #3 even in this economy, trumping Toyota #4 (even with all the ALphards and Hiaces) and Honda #5.

HK is definitely strange, driving is mostly not a necessity, maybe even a burden at times, it's more of a want than need.

Any issues with it over 4 years?

No issues, just been doing regular service during the intervals, VW manual suggests oil changes every 15k, I do it every 7500km. Car has been really solid considering how much I've modded it. Car has an ecu tune and dsg tune too.

As a former multi-time VW owner of 16 - 17 years, I am honestly both impressed and surprised. I hope your trouble-free run with the car will continue.

Do you suppose it is specifically the Golf R that is better built? or does that apply to a general overall improvement in build quality for VW?

I had my mk5 gti for 4 years and had zero issues with it. I treated it like garbage too.

Yeah I hear some people online saying golfs are unreliable, but all my friends over all the years over everything from Mk2 to mk7 have had nothing but solid years and a shit load of km of reliable trouble free use, other than maintenance.

My car was made in Germany, the GTI's are made in Mexico for the mk7's. Not sure if that makes a difference. The EA888 engines and MQB platform have been really solid from what I've read. This is my first VW. I'm hoping for troublefree ownership after warranty ends too lol

I thought GTI's/R's were reasonably reliable?

I knew 1 dude from hockey who bought a brand new GTI with DSG 3 years ago and right from the getgo it was full of problems with the transmission having to be replaced and other electrical issues, he ended up getting his money back it was so severe and he bought an Audi I think.

I just assumed it was a Friday car... everyone else I know loves their GTI or R.
