Honda: try not to stop and start while driving

https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/hon...ater-1.5960676

Quote:
Spring couldn't come fast enough for Jean-François Beaulieu — after spending the freezing Quebec winter driving his young family around in a vehicle that often won't heat up if the temperature drops below –10 C.

Beaulieu, bought his 2017 Honda CR-V EX-L new and noticed almost right away, that when it got cold outside, the car wouldn't heat up inside.

"I feel like I'm driving a three-season car that was not made for Canadian winters," Beaulieu, who paid more than $46,500 for the SUV, told Go Public from his home in Longueuil.

"Winter is solid here four months a year. You need a car that's going to be able to weather that."

...

"It is a safety hazard," Haugen said of her high-end 2018 CR-V SUV which cost her almost $43,000 new.

"I often have to stop halfway through my drive to get out and clear my windshield."

Complaints posted online to Transport Canada and consumer advocacy groups show Haugen and Beaulieu are two of hundreds of Honda owners stuck with a heating system that doesn't work properly when the temperatures dip on certain popular models — some 2017 and 2018 Honda CR-Vs and the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Honda Civic with the 1.5 L turbo engine.

That's terrible. And the CR-V is a hot seller too. Winters in Quebec aren't forgiving either. Ouch.

Honda is a joke, my roommate told me he went to Honda for the airbag recall and the dealer asked for money.

Honda says the lack of heat is part of a problem involving excessive engine oil dilution, and announced a vehicle update campaign in late 2018 that was supposed to fix it.
It’s ok, the motor is going to fail any time now too. Excessive oil dilution!?!?! On a motor that most likely already runs 5w20

I think it's been 0W20 for awhile, R18 1.8L, 2012 to 2015 is 0w20.

R18 was also in 8th gen civic, but I cannot confirm grade of oil

My Girlfriend has owned her 2014 CR-V since new. After 7 years and 101,000 kms of ownwnership her total manintenance and repairs have included 8 oil and filter changes, 1 transmission and dif fluid change, 1 cabin air filter and she just recently replaced the original tires. I can't believe how reliable it's been!

Meh. Sometimes people just get lucky. I had a 2013 F150 I bought new and beat on like an idiot for 184,000km because I was young and dumb(er) and other than oil changes, tires, and one set of brakes never had to spend one penny on maintenance.

Likewise, my buddy bought a 2013 Civic Si at the same time I bought the truck that was a complete lemon. Sometimes lucky, sometimes unlucky.

Honda's market share has gone down quite a bit in BC, especially the lower mainland.
They are down 13% YTD vs 2020, by FAR the largest decrease of any of the Japanese brands. For reference, the next lowest was -2% YTD. February alone, they were -16% YoY.
This has been happening with Honda for quite some time. Mazda has eaten up a lot of that share.

That tiny 1.5t engine must be shivering in its engine bay out east in their climate

No suprise Honda has fallen. Just looking a the CRV, oil dilution aside, the CX-5 was just SO much better. Same or more features, for less money, and (IMO) better looking.

New Rogue is out. New Hyundai Tuscon. New Kia Sorrento.

The one disappointment out there I think was the new Forester. I don't think it's as popular as the old one, but that's just anecdotal, I don't have any data to back that up.
