Buying used appliances

Anyone have any experience with buying used appliances? I'm looking to upgrade our washer and dryer and looking to save some money buying used instead of new. I've seen a few places in north Richmond off Bridgeport but they look rather shady. You guys got any places to recommend? Any help would be much appreciated. TIA.

Washer and dryer is somthing that’s probably not worth the risk imo.

Maybe if it was for a suite or somthing and you’re willing to gamble but for your own laundry I think you’re better off buying a cheap pair from Costco etc. And not have to worry about it

Edit* or buy scratch and dent etc.

Washer/Dryer I personally recommend buying new with extra warranty for piece of mind. Washer, that shit breaks down fast with the new tech implemented these days. I had to replace my circuitboard a year into owning a GE washer, good thing it was covered under warranty.

Go used if your buying for rental suite/tenants to use.

I've bought a washer from one of those places you mentioned off Bridgeport years ago. I had no money to buy a new one. While it did develop a slow leak on the hose connection a year down the road but after replacing the part, I've had zero issues with it since. I'd say if you're handy, get one from them. If not, buy new for the peace of mind.

GE full size front load washer for under $300 was hard to beat at the time.

A front load washer has a pretty finite life at the best of times but especially if it was abused and overloaded. You can get brand new from Costco for about $600 each which isn't much more than what most people want for used stuff.

i did the opposite

bought new for tenant because i dont want the hassle of being called to replace it anytime soon

scored one off craigslist that looked basically brand new for myself that had 3 years of extended warranty via home depot left

transporting a 200lbs boulder was fun though lol

I feel like most modern washers and dryers can last, but it's more to do with how they are handled, installed and disassembled that causes the issue. When I had my new washer and dryer delivered, the buddy guys literally threw and dragged the items to my doorway, and then used a drill to screw the bracket which I later on found out was half stripped.

When they took my 2 year old used washer and dryer (which has a motor issue), they said it was most likely going to be sold used. They also just threw the unit without care into their truck.

For the amount of money saved, I rather spend a few hundred more on a new appliance so that at least you have a piece of mind from the warranty and customer service off-site.

Yup, i know exactly the 2 places you went to.

I go there because my rental units broke their washer / dryer / ovens / fridges.

i never had issues with washer and dryer, the ones that breaks the most are fridges. 90% due to the rental unit pushing the fridge too close into the cupboard, lacking air circulation and killing the unit.

Ever since, i put a 2 by 4 preventing them pushing it too far back. Never an issue anymore.

WHY and WHERE are they getting these things? they get them from dudes who renos and throw these fridges away. they wash them and sell them for $200.

I bought over 4 fridges and 2 ovens and 4 washers throughout the years for all the rental property.

A) get a guy to fix... $150 out the door + parts... ended up $250.
FUCK it
b) removed the fridge and put in a new one $200 (i have a pick up). I tell the tenant to chip in $50 for delivery / if they want to choose a diff model.

If you go back to the idea of buying "new"
Try appliance outlet in BBY, 3618 E 1st Ave

When i renod my condo, i got an oven for 60% of MSRP, its all OEM returns, or like a scratch or two

If you feel like going for a drive theres a BestBuy clearance warehouse in langley right off the highway. I went there to look for a w/d and the prices are quite good. If a product has a slight scratch or even a tiny dent on a side nobody wouod ever see - cant sell in stores amd the the clearance center it goes .
Don't bother calling them to ask what they have because they just say that there's so much that comes in and out its hard to keep track of and every week a new ahipment comes in of random appliances.

BestBuy clearance warehouse

Could be easier buying new on clearance than used

back in my old house i needed to replace a washer and just got the cheapest home depot had to offer at the time, it was like $300-350. very basic but got the job done. it was an easy decision vs risk getting used or hire a repairman at $200 min. callout. figure even a basic new one would last at least 5 years. a washing machine isn't a complicated machine unless you get fancy electronics on it.

For scratched & dents, check out Boss Wholesale in South Surrey. Not only do they sell models within the last year at great discounts they also repair them there as the official warranty repair Centre for Samsung and Bosch appliances. The cherry on top is their aftermarket support. My convection fan motor in my stove broke, and they helped figure out the proper part number and helped me order it for cheaper than I could find online for an oem Samsung part. Would definitely recommend you take a look in person as their stock changes all the time. You could try calling ahead to get a sense of what's there beforehand.

My family got rid of their old washer (it was from 1989)

I flipped it down to just check out what it was

I saw like 5 parts lmao

The drum, motor, inlet pump & drain pump, and the control panel board. LOL

There is a scratch and dent appliance place on 1st and Boundary. Prices are decent. Have bought a few appliances there before. Haven't had any issues with them yet.

ya my current one i replaced i think 3 parts in it, quite basic once you take the shroud off. my only concern is getting past the drum as i'm not confident that i'll re-assemble it water tight and create a flood. at that point i'd call a guy as it's a PITA to swap it out with a new one due to the location.

I buy from the Richmond places all the time for my rental. Quick and easy plus they recognize me now so I get discounts. Like previously said they pick up old inventory and refurbish them and clean them up.
Nothing wrong with that when I'm getting an oven for $120-150.

Yeah, so one of my uncles owns the trucking company that does all the deliveries for Coast Wholesale in the lower mainland. These shops get a good chunk of their stock from him. Most of it is stuff that was working perfectly, people are doing renos or whatever and just wanted new.

Didn't want to make a new thread but appliance related although new not used.

My dryer is going so on Saturday went to buy a new dryer of course I ended up buying both a new washer and dryer Electrolux. I paid for them to deliver and take away my old machines, I did hook up I mean we're talking two fucking hoses, some shipping bolts and a plug lol.

Anyway, I plug machine in and it's DOA. Delivery guys have already left with my machines so now I have a new working dryer and a washer that won't turn on. Yes, I checked the breaker and I also double checked the plug with a lamp.

I call where I bought them, nobody to help me put me through to service department who tells me they'll call back. They called back when i was on a work call and left a msg, someone would call me in a few days?

Am I being a dude version of a Karen if I go down there and demand a new machine in a reasonable time? I don't want to sit here waiting for a call that might be a day out where there like well we can get someone out there in 3 or 4 days only to have them to come out and tell me what I already know the computers fucked and then have to wait for parts?

In my brain I'm thinking this sale was never completed because they did not give me what I purchased. Am I an idiot? Would you want a new machine? I can't go 2-3 weeks without a washer when mine was working fine, my wife will be a nightmare to live with.
