Looked a bit more into insurance and I don't know where one can get insurance to cover a rental like this.

ICBC's Roadside Plus (their highest add-on package) has a limit of only covering cars that cost up to $125/day to rent (https://www.icbc.com/brochures/Pages/roadside-plus.aspx)

Quote:
Our Roadside Plus Rental Vehicle coverage doesn't apply to: Any vehicle, other than a motorhome, truck and camper rented as one unit, or a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, for which the daily rental rate exceeds $125 (Cdn) in Canada or $100 (U.S.) in the United States.
I have the Scotia Visa Momentum Infinite (their top card) and it says they don't cover luxury cars and explicitly calls out Porsches (https://www.scotiabank.com/ca/common..._collision.pdf)

I also have both Rogers World Elite and Tangerine World Elite (their top cards) and it says they don't cover cars with an MSRP over $65k (https://www.rogersbank.com/legaldocs...ce_info.en.pdf)

So where do I get insurance and how much does it cost? Does ICBC offer another kind of rental insurance? BCAA?

I thought Amex Platinum Car Rental Insurance covers cars upto $100K
When I rented a 911 w/ Hertz in California a few years back, I called Amex Plat to make sure my car covered the car, and they said its fine.

At the Hertz Branch, they also put a hold on the Amex Plat, but also asked for 2 more credit card holds...and I asked why, and they said its so you can utilize multiple credit card insurance in the event you need to.

Not sure if that applies here with the Porsche drive program.

Amex Platinum is $85k MSRP (https://www.americanexpress.com/ca/e...platinum-card/)

You can be covered for theft, loss and damage of your rental car with an MSRP of up to $85,000 for rentals of 48 days or less when you fully charge your rental to your Platinum Card.
Pricey card - $699/yr. I'm gonna stick with my World Elite and Infinite cards at that price point.

https://feeservices.americanexpress....verage/home.do

I think there is an add on you can purchase that ups the limit to $100K USD

I wonder if you call your world elite mastercard, if they offer something similar

Out of curiosity, what would your day with the car look like? Drive to Whistler and back?
Or maybe just a nice cruise around West Vancouver and Stanley Park.

I made money off my Amex Plat. You get $200 travel credit, but they also have these special offers. Twice, they gave you $200 spending credit at Save-Ons. I basically used it to buy $400 worth of amazon gift cards. Welcome offer at the time was 65k pts which is $650. They had double points redemption offer last summer, so I pretty much redeemed them for cash at $1300.

A Boxter S comes with a MSRP of $84k, but if PDK is another $3660...does that mean I'm over the $85k limit? Or would PDK be viewed as an add-on option like paint & audio etc?

I would expect that's not covered as it's based on the MSRP of the car you're renting.

So I talked to my ICBC broker and he says ICBC won't cover a rental at this price (I've written into ICBC to double confirm). And neither the Infinite or World Elite plans cover cars this expensive and I've gone and checked with a few online insurance companies (Tugo, Belair Direct, Intact) and none of them will cover cars this expensive (they mostly cap out at $50k). BCAA also doesn't offer any coverage for these situations. AmEx Platinum only covers to somewhere around $85-100k.

So how are people insuring these cars in BC if they're renting them? Are they just praying that they won't get in an accident? I'm really interested in how people are dealing with this - I'd happily pay $100-150/day in insurance to rent a Porsche for a couple days but I'm not going to sign up without any insurance (and I believe technically you must be insured by law).

Seems Porsche is doing the hand wavy thing of "It's on you and none of our business" for BC drivers. That or someone tell me something I don't understand about rental car insurance.

They do. Fucking ABSURDLY expensive though. Comprehensive on my e30 was higher than full coverage from ICBC by like 60%.
Would have made my $1500/year insurance closer to 3k

Is the Porsche Drive / dealership people unable to offer any suggestions at all?

Typically in a regular car rental situation (say, Budget Rent-a-Car, or any of the other companies), they'd directly offer an "insurance policy" when they themselves are the "underwriter" so to speak. As someone whose summer job was a car rental lot boy, I know for a fact that these "insurance coverages" are a major revenue generator for the car rental company. I'd be really surprised if Porsche Canada or the dealership doesn't offer anything of this sort.

Wow, RIP. That sucks.

Having said that, they aren't all that competitive in Ontario either depending on ones circumstances. I did a comparison across 6 different insurance providers and the difference was minimal (like $40) and they throw in a laundry list of restrictions and clauses stipulating what is covered and not etc.

The best was an insurance provider called Vintage Insurance. Basically buy their policy, but you can't drive your car. Maybe once a year for a parade or show and shine.

What does ICBC value an E30 at though? I know they consider my car to be worth $500 so paying an extra $1500/yr to have it insured for the proper value would probably be worth it for me.

There’s no real way of finding that out until it’s a smouldering wreckage. ICBC has been pretty fair in seeing what they pay for niche cars though, from people that have had the unfortunate happen. It’s pretty easy to find documentation of what these cars cost though, and they can’t really argue it’s just a nice trim 318. Hopefully I don’t find out.

You'll be fine. They won't even penalize you for the non-original paint that's not been dusted with a diaper weekly.

I emailed Porsche customer service regarding insurance and I haven't heard back. Local dealers seem like they're in the dark as well.

Not well planned by Porsche HQ, they should have known BC doesn't have private insurance like ON and getting private rental insurance for luxury vehicles is near impossible. My guess is Porsche will have to partner up with an insurance company to provide insurance for the daily rentals.

I'm looking into this for you guys. Unfortunately with ICBC its a bit more complicated than over in the east coast where Porsche Drive originated.

Originally we were told and under the impression that your current vehicle policy would transfer over to the rental under a "temporary substitute vehicle" - sort of like when you take a loaner vehicle from the dealer when your car is in service. But currently we are still not sure so soon as I hear back ill update you guys.

So far most early adopters have been doing monthly and 3 month subscriptions - we are nearly out of 992's in this first phase of the program so demand has shown us that there are enough people that want to experience these cars but at less of a commitment than buying/leasing them.

Another good point I've discovered is you can actually name 2 drivers on a monthly+ subscription. So its actually possible to split the car between you and a friend for 2 weeks each at the cost of not much more than a few days if booking seperately.

Funny enough we haven’t had any short term rentals go out yet - I’m assuming the weather hasn’t been good enough for some people to splurge on a weekend or something like that
