Porsche Drive Rentals coming to town

Got an email from Porsche that subscriptions and rentals are now coming to Vancouver. The rentals sound pretty appealing - the pricing sounds perfectly reasonable to me ($350/day for a Boxster/Cayman and $540 for a 911).

Only thing that stuck out to me is that insurance has to be provided by the renter. I know none of the credit cards would cover a rental of this value (I think they top out at $100/day rental cars) and I don't believe ICBC's Roadstar plan covers this either so where does one get insurance and how much does it cost?

Depends which subscription/tier but it could be any of these:

My understanding is it's a first come first served model. If said dealer/location doesn't have a particular model, it could be for a variety of reasons such as it's been booked by a customer, or simply because they don't have it in their inventory as part of their program.

I think that's only for the subscription service (https://www.porsche.com/canada/en/ac.../subscription/) while the rental is likely more hit and miss (it doesn't show the same list).

I have to imagine good rental stock on the sports cars will be much harder to come by - even now Porsche Vancouver carries way more SUVs and sedans than sports cars.

Also, let us rent a GT3 RS yo. I swear I'm not driving it to Area 27 for a track day.

You'll have to treat the dealer's inventory different from what's set aside for the program. Statistically, all Porsche SUVs outsell the sports cars. A lot of the Boxster/Cayman, 911s, Panameras and Taycan are made-to-order and some dealers have a limited allocation. With the COVID pandemic, you won't be seeing many 911s sitting on the showrooms of dealers. Food for thought - Porsche Canada has already sold over 9000 Taycans. Hard to say the same for the 911 due to the production backlog at their factories.

IMO, the sweet spot lies with the 3-month subscription program because it waives the $750 activation fee, and includes everything (including insurance) except for gas.

With a single vehicle 3-month subscription, I'd say $12k is a reasonable price to pay for having a 911. If I can find the time to enjoy and really drive that car, I can see myself doing it.

100%. Subscribe during spring-fall. With the mileage limits you could drive it on weekends and eat that all up pretty quick (Go up to Pemberton, out to Penticton, out to Port Renfrew) so you wouldn't even have to drive it every day.

Almost wish this was available last year as I was off work from Oct-Dec. My wife probably would have thrown me out of the house if I did it but still.

This program is great because it bridges the gap between leases for some people or helps you decide if you really want to make a commitment in ordering one of these cars by letting you live with it short term with no commitment. Also can't beat renting one of these for a weekend to go drive or for special events where you want to show up in a nice car etc.

For subscriptions the insurance is included in the monthly cost. For rentals it requires the user already have an existing insurance policy that transfers over to the car being rented similar to when you have a loaner car from service etc. I don't believe there is any extra charge in insurance for these short term rentals.

i'm stunned that the insurance is included in the sub plans

it's interesting that porsche requires a "clean driving record" but i can't find anything that states what that really means

for some people in this city, the included insurance would make this program very desirable

You could honestly own a 911 for 3 years and make 12k if you do it right. Big up front cost though, and its not gonna be a new one unless its a Manuel gt3.
I'd gladly pay $5-800 to enjoy one for a day though.

Ah, I believe this the stuff in Roadstar and Roadside Plus - I could have sworn that they had a max dollar amount they cover (eg. If you rent something that costs more than X dollars/day then it's not covered) but I will check with my broker (I have Roadside Plus).

I think the cap refers to rental car coverage if your rental car is out of commission and not the rental car itself.

Do you mean the classic aircooled 911? or some of the 996 / 997 GT cars?

Embarrassing as it may be, I don't actually know very much about the 911, esp the older aircooled ones. So it is very unlikely that I'd be able to pull off that "ownership without losing money" trick that you are talking about.

You'd pay $12,000 for a 3 month rental of a regular 911? If you can cashflow $4k/month for a car luxury, it surely is cheaper to just buy it...

Have all appreciated enough over the last couple years to cover any maintenance you've done, and honestly some of them have appreciated far more than that.
That said you need
A) lots of money to start
B) the knowledge to find which cars
C) a crystal ball to know that was going to happen

That also said, you aren't gonna lose 12k in 3 months to own any of those either, basically no matter what happens.

If I can spend the time driving the car often enough, I can justify having this one time 3-month fling, and I can come up with / rebuild that $12k over, say 2 years? To buy one means I'll need $120k at a minimum, and there is absolutely no way I can swing that.

Perhaps I was confused - I thought when you said you could see yourself doing it, you were seriously considering. I realize now this is more of a hypothetical/dream - "I would do it IF I could drive it 7 days a week and IF I could not sweat the money, etc."

IMO we would all do it if we could drive the cars all day and not worry about the money, but most cannot, and so I maintain that the pool of people who are actually GOING to sign up to rent a 911 for $12k is basically 0.

I've been confused about these high end dealer rentals. If I had $4000 a month to blow on a car, you can easily finance or lease a Ferrari/ Lamborghini. I don't see why you would want to pay that much for a low to average spec Porsche. And if I had that much cash to blow on a month I most likely won't be driving one car that much as a run around vehicle to make the seat time Vs price make sense.

Including taxes, maintenance, and insurance? I can't imagine an annual service at Porsche is cheap.

I think if you plan time off or a trip around it and think of it as a holiday it makes sense to do something like this. It's a slightly different type of car but I know when I was dreaming of owning an Aston Martin I realized that for what the taxes cost I could have a holiday in the UK with my wife and rent an Aston and get to drive it on fun roads, instead of just sitting in traffic on my way to work with it here.

Another thing is hygiene. Rental cars are filthy. Especially during Coronas. I'm not sure if this is a good deal if you're driving a 2-3 year old car with like 20000 beat km on it.

Depends on the car. A broken 996? No, you'll lose plenty. A perfect 964? You're probably paying for maintenance, gas, insurance, taxes, and making 10k with a 3 year ownership. The more expensive, better condition and less common it is, the easier thats gonna be.
