This is pretty crazy... 3x more deaths than what we'd normally see in a day. If heatdome business is gonna keep recurring with more frequency, we're all fxxked... ...

Costco will be getting AC units soon. Was scheduled to arrive yesterday, but they have not received them at the depot yet. Maybe Monday?

Up at our cabin between merrit and Kamloops, had to evacuate last night at 10pm due to the fires close by. The night before we watched a 45 minute lightning storm of the brightest, loudest lightning I’ve ever seen… by the time we evacuated the smoke was very dense and yellow like the fire was very close.. Uhg

heard from a Best Buy employee that a lot of customers are now returning their AC's now that the heatwave is over. Man, this upsets me, retailers should ban returns on AC's and fans just like they did for pandemic hoarders on TP and disinfectants.

Do these people not think they're never going to experience another heat wave here in their lifetimes?

I actually bought my portable AC in March of 2020 when things when to work from home, I thought they were going to be flying off the shelves back then. So glad I had it.

Going to Costco later today, I've been wondering when the AC returns would start. People will do almost anything to save a buck.

No AC units (or air purifiers) at Still Creek.

Are they actually returning them after USING them? Or are they returning the extra ones they bought hoping to profit but didn’t sell?

14 arriving tonight at Still Creek. Will be available first thing tomorrow.

Brighton Avenue getting 40+ units tonight. Will be available first thing tomorrow, as well. Some are planning on camping overnight, lol. They will be giving out numbers in the line up. Seniors get in first, but line up for AC's are whoever's in the lineup first. In other words, it's first come first served. It's going to be nuts.

I have enough AC's. Would like one as a spare, but not lining up for the one Costco is selling. It's a Danby that comes with a two year warranty. Reviews aren't that great.

There's a huge thread on RFD about these Danby units, most people are actually lauding the thing. The costco online reviews aren't great though, you're right. I think I'll venture out to get one, 12,000 BTU SACC for $500 is not a bad deal.

CT will only give you store credit, maybe.

Imo if the province/country was serious about the future of wildfires in this country they should be looking into buying snd retrofitting 747’s into water bombers. Obviously this is a huge expensive program but now is the time.. for those who don’t know, basically all major carriers are retiring their 4 engine planes with virtually no market for resale. You could buy fantastic plants from a Quantas etc. And repurpose them.

But in typical govt. fashion I can almost guarantee the smoke and wild fires will not be dealt with proactively and we will just have the live with the smoke and fires going forward

I’m no aerospace engineer but I have serious doubts about whether a 747 can fly low and slow enough to maintain altitude/power in this sort of capacity and still drop water

Honestly they're not that useful. The newer planes can turn around quicker and drop more water overall.

747 tankers do exist and they do get used. But the conversion is not cheap and you need a suitable base for them to fly out of.

We had a Danby from Costco. I'd say it worked good until it started leaking. I thought it needed to be emptied but the tank was bone dry, it just leaked water everytime it ran so we returned it.

It was loud though.

It's for sale: https://fireaviation.com/2021/04/23/...ng-operations/

But I think you are better off with smaller planes that can take off at smaller airports.

Problem with the 747 thing is the only airport that could probably house it would be Kelowna. And I’m not even sure Kelowna could land a 747

Odds are any sort of program like that would have to be based out of Calgary or YVR

I would think a bigger plane that needs a longer runway/higher minimum speed might also have the same requirements when filling up with water? That might eliminate some of the smaller lakes from being used.

Having a couple big mofos, whatever they may be, in Kelowna is probably a good idea though.
