Record breaking day in September here too, 35.2. Thankfully it's really dry so it's not THAT bad
Every summer from now on will be the coolest we've had. Everything warned about is happening, so from here we'll get extreme salinization, changed weather patterns, extreme cold in the winter, etc. Utter catastrophe may still be decades away, but probably still in our lifetimes. Covid will seem like a picnic.
Thankfully a few people got extremely rich, so it will have been worth it

i thought with everyone fleeing hong kong, it would be not as congested and thus cooler?!
yeah i was driving in the canyons of LA..was outside maybe 1hr tops started getting a headache, 43C that afternoon
on the way home north of redding, there was a smallish wildlife few miles away with helicopter actively dousing on it..already burned 100+ homes and claimed a few lives
Weather was perfect tonight for walking dog before dinner, warm but a nice breeze.

Holy crap. I was going to take a road trip down to cali next week but given those temperatures yarg… no way
My cousin was down there last week doing one, weather looked great. He rented a convertible and put almost 1000 miles on it up and down the coast. Looks like he picked the right week.

I setup my AC last night, just takes way too long to cool down a western facing bedroom when it’s this hot. It’s not comfortable for sleeping until 2-3 AM earliest

For most of the day I'd have the house set for 23°C, but I turned off the heat pump around dinner time so I could open my kitchen doors while I was cooking and using the grills. With the heat pump off, it shot up to 27 inside the house within an hour. Turned the system on again at about 9:30, it was 24 by 11pm.
Indoor home temperatures last night / this morning:
9pm -- ~29ºC
I opened all the windows we had, and kept them over thru to this morning.
12am -- ~27ºC
3am -- ~24ºC -- outdoor temps should be ~14 - 15ºC
8am -- ~23ºC
Not quite ready to setup the A/C for the summer season just yet because it is a PITA. I hope we'll be OK to get thru this week.
Heatpump install time. $10k and you'll save a bit in the winter on heating too.

If you want it to be cool, turn the unit on at noon. Ac units are designed to maintain temperature, not pull it down (Unless oversized, and even then, heat dissipates from objects only so fast)
You can pull the heat out of the air quickly. But 80% of the heat remains in the walls, mattress, desk, slab, whatever
The room may be 20C, but I guarantee you if you put a turkey thermometer checker into your mattress it's going to be 27C
assuming unit is prolly sized

Yea, our biggest thing is the insulation is pretty much non-existent but I think you’re still right in that maintaining will be less work/less time than trying to pull down an already hot room at 6-7pm

Our house is a mid-90s house with double pane windows and R25 in the attic.
We opened everything up last night and got down to 21 C upstairs. Didn't bother setting up the portable ACs since it's getting cold enough overnight.
Getting a heat pump installed in a few weeks and new ducting installed for a couple of rooms upstairs. Hopefully, it can keep temps reasonable for those hot days in August.
