Gonna wait until winter to pick up another fan for home and possibly AC unit. I'm one of those cheapo that won't pay for things at its highest price during peak.

Sad news reported in Burnaby.

More than 25 people, many of them being seniors, are reported dead in Burnaby. -potentially heat related deaths.

Talk about a killer heat wave.

https://www.citynews1130.com/2021/06...y-heat-deaths/

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Burnaby are urging you to check on your loved ones during this heatwave, after dozens of sudden deaths that are believed to be linked to heat.

RCMP say in a 24-hour period since Monday, officers responded to more than 25 sudden deaths. Investigators believe heat was a contributing factor in the majority of the deaths.

Many of those who died were seniors.

“We are seeing this weather can be deadly for vulnerable members of our community, especially the elderly and those with underlying health issues. It is imperative we check on one another during this extreme heat,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

How long do portable AC units last since you cant refill the refrigerant? Mine is nearly 6 years old now.

Just learned this morning that one of those who have passed away because of the heatwave is a friend's father.

My stubborn old man has been refusing to sleep in the basement in the last few evenings, and there is nothing any of us can do to make him.

My father in law installed a 15 year old AC unit in our condo yesterday. It was sitting in their garage, hadn't been used in a while. It didn't cool our unit down to a level where it was cool, but it was still blowing cold air and I was able to sleep.

That's your air return. It's the intake for the HVAC system, which is basically a big loop.

It's probably just dust, but it's never a bad thing to clean it.

Let him know how much him passing away or ending up in a hospital would affect you and the family. If grandchildren are in the picture, let him know how much they would miss him. If he is one of those really grumpy old farts, there's really nothing you can do. Guys like him will regret it in the end, but still not show it on the outside. What's worse than a grumpy old man? An asian grumpy old man.

Thanks, I was getting tired of RS. Too many takers and not enough givers. I've always said a community is only as good as the people in it. So much negativity. I lost faith there for a while. Anyway, the majority of RS members are good people. I've met a few over the years. I remember the time when people were always helping out others at the drop of a hat. The old blood drive thing got me into RS. Never went to the spring and summer meets, but went to some fundraisers. I post too much sometimes, but if someone benefits in one way or another, I'll keep sharing my experiences.

In my travels, I've come to the conclusion that everybody, no matter how insignificant their contribution is, and whether or not it is a positive or a negative contribution, we are all affected by it. Like the Cadbury ads, "There's good in all of us." Which reminds me. I have to bump that thread that has gone into hibernation............

Isn't that thing on your ceiling an air diffuser? I have an air exchanger in my house and every room has one of those in the ceiling.

Oh man ... just thinking how the seniors got it bad when Covid hit ... now they are the ones getting hit again with the heat wave.

Another thing to add to senior homes to do list ... get central air!

The square one is your air return and the second is a vent for air to come out. Please clean your vent as it looks really dirty. You can actually twist it to open and close more

More than 6 years?

I have a Delonghi that's been with me for at least 6 years and it's still running strong. I think if you're running it regularly but not excessively that it'll go a good 10 years - the seals stay lubed while the motor doesn't take on too much wear.

If you guys are considering air purifiers

You may want to consider the Rabbit Air brand
https://www.rabbitair.com/

They were top of the charts in all the review sites I checked out with their minusa2 model, and they just came out with a new model, the A3 which has won some awards already

The thing is so sensitive, even on normal setting, and it purifies rooms larger than its rated for so quickly, someone fried some bacon without the vent turned on? The A2 clears out the stench in minutes (unless u like the smell o bacon)

And now that the A3 is out, the A2 is slightly cheaper

Thats like buying a 6 year old car, and asking how long its gonna last

Is it a ferrari, or a honda
Does it get maintenance done on it yearly
How long does it run per year
Do you store it properly
Do you operate it in max, or minimum temperatures

You can refill the refrigerant, but it will cost you more than a new one

Just opened my balcony window and am greeted with a cool breeze!! (cool is relative I suppose, as the inside of my apartment is 31 degrees xD)

Hopefully in the next few hours some of my room's heat will dissipate~

Never thought I'd be relieved to see HIGH TWENTIES overnight lol

PSA folks ... if you have any seniors or elderly in your network of your relationships, give them a call and see how they are doing. News reports have high number of seniors living alone dying in this heat ... !!! This heat wave .. a major inconvenience to us has some very serious health issues to the vulnerable group.

Heat like we’ve just experienced is dangerous.

https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/report_e.html?bc42

RE: ground level ozone:

Quote:
Exposure is particularly a concern for people with underlying conditions such as lung disease, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including bronchitis and emphysema, as well as asthma, and/or diabetes; individuals with respiratory infections such as COVID-19; pregnant women and infants; children; outdoor workers (e.g. construction and agricultural workers); and older adults. Individuals who are socially marginalized may also be at elevated risk (e.g. people who are experiencing homelessness or are underhoused).
I have mild asthma and I felt it in my chest yesterday. I suppose the ground level ozone was being pumped into the house by my AC.
