Heat wave warning: Dangerously hot temperatures coming to B.C. this weekend

VANCOUVER -- The heat wave sending temperatures soaring across much of B.C. is expected to get worse over the weekend, prompting new heat warnings from Environment Canada.

The weather agency said an "exceptionally strong" ridge of high pressure could leave parts of the province dangerously hot from Friday until Tuesday.

"The duration of this heat wave is concerning as there is little relief at night with elevated overnight temperatures," reads a warning issued Wednesday afternoon."This record-breaking heat event will increase the potential for heat-related illnesses."

Warnings have been issued in most regions of the province, including Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Environment Canada said temperatures could reach as high as 38 degrees during the day in Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Hope – and stay as high as 20 degrees overnight.

The weather agency recommended that British Columbians drink plenty of water, find a cool place to stay, and check in with older family, friends and neighbours.

"Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle," Wednesday's warning reads.

Symptoms of heat illness include dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, extreme thirst, and decreased urination with unusually dark urine.

Lower Mainland heatwave not indicative of entire summer forecast: meteorologist
VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As the Lower Mainland is set to see potentially record-breaking temperatures this weekend, Meteorologist Michael Kuss says the early hot spell the region is experiencing isn’t necessarily what we’ll see over the next few months.

Vancouver 7 Day Forecast: A couple fresher days ahead before the heat returns. May not be able to find a spot at the beach this weekend. #Summer @NEWS1130 @CityNewsVAN pic.twitter.com/RT7ekVsnIb

— Michael Kuss (@Kusswx) June 22, 2021

He says the pattern is closer to normal, with temperatures expected to perhaps be slightly higher than normal and conditions a bit drier than usual.

“Even though it’s been incredibly dry through spring and we’re seeing this early summer hot spell. It’s not really an indicator of what will come sort of mid-to-late summer,” he explained. “I would take all that we’re seeing right now and just throw it out the window. It doesn’t mean anything when it has to do with the summer forecast.”

It’s the water temperatures we’ll want to keep an eye on if we want to get a taste of what’s to come.

“If we start to see the water temperatures, the sea surface temperatures really warming up, that will be an indicator of warmer temperatures all the way through the summer,” Michael added, noting it’s still a little early to say for sure what the months ahead will bring.

Australia and Asia have AC everywhere and the people are acclimatized and ready for it.

I was in Singapore years ago when they reported on the news: "LOWEST TEMPERATURE EVER!: 19 degrees"

It's like when Texas was hit with "unbelievable" temperatures of -10 last winter. The power grid/houses/people were not prepared for it and they suffered immensely.

Patting myself on the back for booking an Island getaway where temps are forecasted to be 5-7 degrees cooler.

Kicking myself for not making sure our accommodations had AC first. Lows of 20 are still gonna suck overnight

Yah ... here in YVR, most houses and condos built prior to 2010 don't even have AC! The thinking is ... 'Oh well, people can suffer one or two days.' But now global warming or whatever ... our summers can get pretty hot!

Are newer builds including AC units or central AC?

Generally speaking, yes, most new towers will have AC.

Nice! I have central AC in my house too, but the main floor has an open concept so it has a hard time cooling down. I’m also the corner lot on the northeast corner, so I’m shaded from the sun in the first half of the day, but as the sun moves across the sky during the hottest part of the day, it just cooks the street side of the house with no chance to cool down until sunset.

Upstairs, if I close each bedroom door, it can get cold.

Maybe if this 38C lasts a few weeks, my old strata will suddenly have a change of heart in regards to allowing AC installs.

Oh wait, they said AC units are as loud as trains, will cost 7$/per unit in insurance, and god forbid a 3" core is required thru the envelope

Those of you with AC, turn your unit on several hours before you get home, or even let it run all day on 38C days. Dont forget the majority of the heat load, is in the materials, not the air.

High 30s is still hot for these places, and as mentioned ppls bodies are acclimated there, it's why when you land there on a hot day, you're getting heat stroke, and they're just/shrug

System undersized
System out of charge
Dirty air filters
Blocked supply / return grilles
On hot days, the system needs to stay on cool 24/7, starting to cool your house at 5pm is not going to work
Open windows / doors, might aswell put your indoor unit outside and try to cool the earth

Good luck everyone. 38 is brutal, I can't imagine what it would be like not to have AC at that temperature. Hopefully it's a bit drier inland so it won't be as bad

lol, buy your portable ac before it's too late.
I remember the big heatwave we had maybe 3-4 years ago, I was scrambling trying to buy one and they were all sold out everywhere.

The only one I eventually found were the overpriced, expensive ones that obviously everyone else avoided due to the price.

Honestly after 2018 and the fire season we had everyone should have rushed out and got a portable AC. I mean how did you guys all survive Sept 2020 smokepocalypse? I had that baby running 24/7 for a week!
