That sounds excessive. $14,000 better be a brand new crate engine and install at VW (I meant Audi) dealership, not an Indy. Advise him to seek a second opinion before proceeding. Also the fact that IB Motors can’t even spell Volkswagen right on their home page doesn’t bode well.

This is great info all, I'm passing this back to him to pull his head out of his ass.

Don't think the work has started yet, really appreciate the responses!

Weird, too bad we don't have any people that know anything about cars around here, maybe next time he should ask a car enthusiast forum.

mikemhg 08-20-2021 05:19 PM

Ya I wasn't impressed with him for not following advise.

The guy at IB Motors told him it's better to have the engine pulled and rebuilt, as opposed to buying a new used engine. He said he looked around and could only find a used engine for $8K.

The work hasn't started yet, so I told him at the very least call around and see your other options with the shops suggested here.

Stubborn bastard said he'll now call around and get some second opinion, why the fuck would that not have been his first course of action, only god knows :lol

Just stop helping at this point

How's the saying go? It's not you, it's him. Or is it. It's not him it's you.

Take it as foreshadowing, your "friend" doesn't trust your advice enough to take into consideration.

JDMDreams 08-20-2021 10:44 PM

If your friend can afford to drop $14000 on a random engine repair maybe he should just buy a new car:fuckyea:

Who knows? It sounds more like the tuner shop talked him into going that route. It's funny cause he reached out for advice, but didn't follow it :lol

Either way he can't really afford it, he has a 2 year old, and now a newborn, running on a shoestring budget with his wife while trying to buy their first place.

The guy is pretty stressed as this will definitely eat into his down payment, which sucks.

Who would've known a fairly benign tune would cause so much damage :heckno:

$800 to swap a motor in labour... complete SQ5 engine used is about $5,000USD and I don't even think he needs that, just needs a block... he shoulda been able to fix the car for less than $10k easily

Just looked up labour times for SQ5 for complete engine swap and complete overhaul on prodemand.

20.9HR for complete engine swap
42 HR for complete overhaul.

hourly rates for shops nowadays are 130+

$800 engine swap days are over. Even for hondas and toyotas.

Shoestring budget with a family and picks an Audi :suspicious:

Usually my Audi customers with bachelor status are making min 80k/annual and that's not even thinking about saving.

bcrdukes 08-21-2021 04:02 PM

Buddy guy is not on Revscene, therefore not making $250K/year household income.

SkunkWorks 08-21-2021 04:10 PM

Sounds like gulululu

Guh, no wonder everyone has nice cars around here.

mikemhg 08-22-2021 11:35 AM

He's finishing his CPA, so when I say shoestring I don't mean the guy is making under $80K, He's more in the 100k range. Not a $14 dolla balla LOL.

His wife is currently taking classes and working part-time at home, so pretty much running off of one income, while in the process of buying their first place, hence "shoestring" budget, household of around $130-140K.

bcrdukes 08-22-2021 11:52 AM

Not sure I'd want to leave my accounting work to this guy. :troll:

JDMDreams 08-22-2021 01:52 PM

I think we all have those friends who ask for advice then just does the complete opposite. Those are the type of friends i stop giving advice to yet keep tabs on for my own shits and giggles. So please keep us updated.

I have a 2 strikes policy with these friends... after that, I just start telling them the opposite advice of what I would normally give and then make popcorn.

Non CPA accountants make 6 figures?

mikemhg 08-23-2021 03:26 PM

Update: He essentially has to be all in with IB Motors, as the engine is now pulled out. He's been quoted roughly a total time of 30ish hours for the engine pull and install, along with fixing the piston ring for cylinder 6 (the one misfiring).

The mechanic said the other cylinders look fine, but he recommends he might as well have the other 5 piston rings replaced, which will result in the additional $4k to have them completed.

So essentially his two options are:

Fix 1 piston ring under cylinder 6 = $11K
Replace all 6 = $14K

He's gone ahead and ordered a Model 3 Tesla which will be ready for January, his plans are to trade this Audi + Cash for the Model 3.

Once again he's asked my advice on which of the two options to go with, I recommended to fix the one that is broken, and walk away from the vehicle.

Good luck to the person who purchases this thing off auction :lol
