Well daddy Doug said that's what the STI is for. WRX is for daily, sti is for racers. And that they had no money to build a wagon

I wonder of its still so low powered because the CVT will explode but it doesn't make sense to hold a car back for a transmission

On the topic of exploding CVTs, I noticed a weird grinding noise coming from either the engine bay or transmission when I’ve got the throttle at around 50% and at 60KM/h+. I took it in to Toyota for a diagnostic check and five hours later, the Service Manager and Sr. Tech come out to tell me my transmission has failed.

Thankfully, parts and labour are covered by Toyota under factory warranty but it leaves me wondering WTF happened on a Corolla with less than 150hp and 75,300KM mostly highway driven? I expect this on some European marquee or a Nissan, but not a Toyota. I’m pretty cheezed and will avoid cars with a CVT for years to come. I really think I got unlucky with this. Karma for making fun of BMW I guess.

Did you change the CVT oil? Or did they tell you it's life time oil

It's still fugly.
How much can a few bits of plastic trim really aid aerodynamic efficiency when the rest of the car is a brick lol.

IMO, it was done to align the WRX with the rest of the lineup (which, conveniently, is covered in black plastic cladding!). Subaru is really trying to find a way to emphasize/highlight their AWD drivetrain through design now that every manufacture has AWD/4WD. What helped me cut through all the BS was learning that they actually raised the car by 0.5".

No, I didn't, although I did ask them to several times and Toyota said it wasn't necessary given the age and mileage. The car was still under factory warranty so I didn't want to argue with them. Alas, this is where we ended up.

The tech has programmed the ECU to run on some kind of limp mode so the car is still drivable, albeit it doesn't have the pep it once had, and the grinding noise isn't as evident as it was before. So until the transmission is at the dealership, they've told me it's okay to drive around like this for the next while.

I've been driving a 2020 Corolla, the CVT is ok, there's occasionally a jerk at initial acceleration off the line and sometimes a clunk when you let off the throttle too fast in traffic. It has around 32k Kms. The interior is shit and so tinny sounding though in the heavy rain, hail. Not sure how the gr Yaris or Corolla will turn out.

my conventional 5psd toyota slushbox can be a bit jerky on rethrottle once the vehicle is in motion and have to adjust my inputs a bit to reduce it.. haven't tried new fluids in diffs/trans/tcase

no way would it have been acceptable at 30k on the clock..if its failing get it fixed under warranty and count your lucky stars to list it afterwards

I find that CVTs, regardless of manufacturer, will have their quirks, notably the ones you mentioned. They are designed to optimize for fuel economy (likely why it was used in this iteration for the WRX.) I recommend you dig into this with your dealership as I had experienced a similar experience when we first got our Corolla. Maybe 8 months in to our ownership. Toyota issued a recall to update the software on the transmission module which alleviated all the issues you mentioned.

I can't speak to how "shitty" your interior is but when we were car shopping recently, it was quite decent in comparison to its Japanese competitors in its class. The interior of our Corolla looks and feels like new from when we purchased it in 2017 and was miles ahead better than its competitors (at the time.) As for the heavy rain and the interior sounding like tin, that's likely because of the new TNGA platform used, and also, this has always been an uninspiring choice for me with any Subaru as this is par for the course for many generations.

I can't tell if you are just miserable with your decision, or if your expectations aren't realistic. If it's as bad as you make it to be, I'm positive the dealership would be happy to buy the car back from you given the current situation of inventory.

Yea not my car so not my problem, it was a courtesy car I've been driving for the last few weeks. It was fun to play with the latest 2020 Toyota tech. The lane keep, and radar cruise which was nice to have in such a low end car. But it kinda sucks cuz unless the lanes are perfect and it's bright out, the lane keep doesn't work. And if it did it work it beeps at you every 15 or 30 sec, cuz either it can't read the lines or you have to hold the wheel. It also wobbles back and forth between the lines. Also the radar cruise is super sluggish and leaves like a 6 car gap and ppl keep cutting in front of you. Also I've had a few times where I had to manual apply the brakes cuz the radar didn't detect the car cutting on front.

I wonder if the Subaru eye sight that they have is the same thing?

Probably the same, or at least the foundation of the technology is shared and then adapted to each company's iteration on the market.

I don't think such technology can be perfect so early in the game but if you have to rely and expect the technology to save you from all these situations, I think a company called Translink could be the answer to your problems.

The news makes me wonder -- does Subaru really sell that few STIs? The easy button to make a new gen STI would have been to dial up the boost by a whole bunch, tune it for reliability and drivability, and slap on a few more performance bits on the WRX. With the way the 2022 WRX is, there should be a LOT of headroom for Subie to tap into.

A guy recently took his 2013 crosstrek and swapped in an entire 2018 STi. I’m talking motor, drivetrain, subframes, interior (Seats dash door cards headliner etc) and virtually the ENTIRE project was bolt on.
