| The All-New 2022 Subaru WRX. Being announced in 7 days
Pretty excited for this, would love to replace my s4 with a new STi which will hopefully be soon behind, hatchback and dsg are probably wishful thinking. Interested to see what the new powertrain is like fa24dit with a pretty bump hopefully https://www.subaru.com/2022-wrx |

Out of curiosity (and to be clear, I am not judging your decision) but what was the thought process or rationale in moving from you S4 to WRX?

I actually went from a 2016 wrx sti to a S4. S4 is 100 x better IMO.

I’m on the STi forums and every week there are topics made about “2021 STi, or 2022?” And the overwhelming answer is get the 2021. All of it with the same reason; we know all the problems with the ej257. What if the FA is worse?
I don’t buy it. I’m sure the new FA will be fantastic. It already is pretty good in the wrx

Is it all new?
Or does it look like the last year model, with new trim, so its all new?

By the time a new STi is released my s4 will probably be close to 10yo and 150k. Its been reliable but I don't want to press my luck. The WRX/sti also seem to retain their value quite well.

I don’t buy it. I’m sure the new FA will be fantastic. It already is pretty good in the wrx | Isn't the FA24DIT already available in the Ascent in a lower state of tune? If there are common problems with it, I would expect people to have already heard about some of them.
I don't have an axe to grind with the old EJ, but a replacement with something a lot more modern is long overdue. Pumping out 276hp in early 2000's is impressive. Pumping out 305hp in 2021 is really kind of meh. (Not to mention how thirsty the engine is.)

The 'detuned' FA24DIT in the Ascent is really punchy. Drove one as a passenger van for about a week in all city driving and couldn't get under 14L/100km
The boost is addicting, but the CVT 'upshifts' so aggressively, so it keeps you out of boost. It's amazing how much power it has on 87 octane
Tribeca is better tho

Had hot hatches for a long time. I prefer driving my e36 m3 over the f87 m2. If the new wrx/sti have a hatch option I may be swayed depending on how they drive.

Yes the FA24 is available, and is a great motor. But you know how it is with car people, they like what they know and fear change
Speaking of thirsty, the STi supplemental manual says consuming up to 1qt of oil within 1000 miles (1600km) is at the upper end, but within operating specs.
That is fucking insane. With my RS that’s tuned to the limit of the stock hardware has done 2 track days, 3 autox days, road trips to the interior and daily driving, and has lost *maybe* 100mL. And its 65k km of hard use too.

What's with the black wheel cladding? Targeting the SUV audience now with this thing? Makes for some massive looking wheel gap.

Its so you can slam your car but still have the illusion of a wheel gap so you dont get a VI.
Bless Subaru for listening to our car community and assisting in the on-going fight against VIs.

Not a single word mentioning about the CVT transmission, which I'm pretty sure it is.

I'm glad Subaru hasn't stopped working with Toyota just on the BRZ... now taking elements of the RAV-4 over to the Impreza line too!

I guess it's because CVT has such a bad name over the years, tbh I don't mind them on economy cars where it's just to go around traffic. It makes sense to have a smoother drivetrain but on a WRX it doesn't seem as fitting. Then again, most will be buying it with the manual so...
apparently manual trans can only send up to 50% of the power rearwards while the cvt can send up to 55% Quote:
the new Subaru Performance Transmission (automatic) which offers up to 30 percent faster upshifts (2nd to 3rd) and 50 percent faster downshifts (3rd to 2nd). The automatic transmission incorporates adaptive shift control that can quickly respond to perform rev-matching downshifts under braking, maintain the ideal ratio through corners, and respond faster on corner exit. Total ratio coverage range has been enlarged, and lower ‘fixed’ gear ratios have been revised to improve acceleration and response.
