The hybrid powertrain sounds amazing. The F150 will have competition now.
The truck itself looks great but I feel like Toyota/Lexus always uses the same recycled plastic interior bits from older models and it looks like they did the same with the Tundra. It’s going to be interesting to see the Doug Demuro review.
so this will most likely be the same powertrain(s) available when they make a new 4runner

There's something about the rear tails that I don't like, I think it would have looked better if the bottom of the lights stayed straight instead of matching the top.
I hope Toyota is making this another d4s engine. They are one of the last manufacturers making engines that wont have GDI issues by the time they are out of warranty.
For how long Toyota runs a bodystyle, for sure this will one day become full EV like the Ford Lightning.
It sucks the hybrid version didn't have a generator like the fords do. Hopefully that's coming later because that's a pretty big feature that's missing

I suspect new 4runner/Tacoma will probably have some version the new 2.4 turbo 4 cyl they put in the nx350. Hopefully there's a hybrid version too.
Number of Americans who will buy a 4 cylinder truck = almost none
Ranger is 2.3t 4cyl only, also the Broncos base engine. Wrangler has a turbo 4 as an option above the v6. Chevy has a n/a 2.5 4 cyl base engine in the Colorado, and they'll even sell you a half ton with a 2.7l turbo 4. So given that all the American automakers current offer 4 cyl trucks I think it's safe to say Americans are buying them.

LOL i must be hella tripping, i kept on thinking this was the new tacoma so assumed itll be the drivetrain for the next 4runner as well. no wonder i kept on thinking to myself, wow the tacoma sure has grown in size.

I think they smashed it outta the park with the hybrid option and it's torque boost. Now that it seems to be in the same field as the competition for hp/tq and mpg's it'll be interesting to see how much more of the marketshare they'll consume. It's not like Toyota to put out stuff that breaks so here's hoping that the new powertrain stands the test of time and holds up to the reliability reputation that the brand is known for.
Coincidently, I have a 2021 Platinum due to arrive in about a week and I'll be happy to have the V8 send-off year to daily while watching how this new gen performs. Picking up a 2024/25 after they've sorted the bugs out and addressed customer complaints seems like a solid plan.
The biggest complaint will be pricing. Although, any of the Big 3 have their fully loaded half tons in the $80k-$90K+ range anyway, so the days of a fully loaded Tundra for $64k are gone I'm thinking.
I think they did a great job all in all with only a few weird quirky and perhaps gaudy choices. Will be interesting to see how production goes with all the chip shortage talk; I'd hate to hear that it's a year long waiting list.
Were the trucks from a few gens ago not beefy enough? Granted I hate unnecessarily large vehicles to begin with (don't start me on that rant), but every truck now looks like the designers got a little too carried away with the "extrude" tool and just keep stretching the cab taller. Then they slap so much gaudy crap on the front it looks like it was designed by Affliction or Ed Hardy. They're hideous.
Is there just a ton of dead space between the engine and axle? They manage to make the engine bay look cramped, but they've added 6" to the height of the bay to fit the same size engines they put in cars and small SUVs (and the older gens of the same truck).

Not sure how I feel about that digital faux carbon trim, it looks tacky.
Can someone remind us all what the taxes and rebates are like on a vehicle like this? It's hybrid so it gets a rebate correct? How does that affect the luxury tax?
Toyota Tundra's chief engineer explains the changes for the new generation.
Think Toyota hit this one out of the ball park.
