ICBC deposit for parts to repair???
 

Long story short but my car was hit a while ago. I was parked so I was not at fault, and I have the other drivers info.

Now I am not sure if it's cuz of the weird shipping world we're in now. But it's quoted that the earliest I can get parts to start the repair will be 6 months. So I have to drive around with a broken car for 6+ months.

The next thing that I'm questioning is now the shop wants me to put a deposit of 50% to buy these parts. As my car is JDM they have to order from some specialty shop. My shops explanation is that incase if my car gets hit again and my car gets written off in the mean time they still have to pay for the parts if my car doesn't get fixed. So I have to pay out of pocket 50% for the parts for them just to order it. And it's not cheap, they got quoted a few thousand just in parts alone.

So anyone has any experience like this? I've never had to pay anything to get my car fixed when I'm not at fault. It makes no difference if my car is JDM or not due to the shipping delays. I can literally eBay some OEM parts right now....... Says ups shipping and it shouldn't take 6 months to come.

And yea I rather not drive around for 6 months in a broken car with bits taped on, lights damaged, and vi police magnet.

But apparently when I called ICBC they allow you to drive around with broken ass cars, just tell the cop you have a claim number and you're waiting for parts. :suspicious:

This is true - they allow you to drive around. I drove my 330ci that was rear ended around for like 6 months LOL. Even drove it to Vernon to get the M3.

Own a JDM car, deal with the inconveniences of owning a JDM car. Not much you can do.

Same with my MR2, it's not even JDM, but if my front bumper ever gets caved in it might be a writeoff just from that since you can't get one literally anywhere. ICBC isn't going to go on eBay for you or search through Facebook groups.

Yea I don't mind the JDM part of things. It's the fact that I have to pay upfront for a deposit to order parts? What difference is there between my car and any other car that I have to order parts for. If someone crashes their Tesla they don't have to pay upfront to order parts from Tesla.........

Cuz they can just return the Tesla parts.

Just to throw the option out there -- is it at all possible to talk to ICBC and ask them to just write the car off?

I agree with OP, if the shop has to order specialty non refundable parts, he shouldn't have to pay that out of pocket. Shop should talk to ICBC adjuster directly and ICBC should pay if they authorize it. If they don't want to pay, ICBC can choose to write it off instead. But either way, OP shouldn't have to put up any cash out of pocket. That's what insurance is for.

^^ that's what I'm thinking too. What's the point of insurance if I have to pay up front. When I'm not at fault. I haven't had the chance to speak to ICBC regarding this.

If it was at my shop and you left the car there while we wait for parts, I'd store it and not charge you anything up front. The worry is you write off the car or sell it and not get it fixed then the shop is stuck with a bunch or random BS parts they will have to firesale.

Just get ICBC involved again, they will deal with it. This is precisely why you have insurance. So you don't pay out of pocket when shit gets fucked.

Depending on the labour to parts ratio, it's probably not worth it for the shop to risk holding the bag on the parts. I may have to decline that risky job. Not sure about bodyshops, but for mechanical we are turning work away daily due to not enough hours in the day. There are always cars to fill the bays, the work is endless.

If you turn it around, do you want to get the car fixed? The shop won't receive payment from ICBC until after the repairs are complete. The shop will float the cost of these parts for that entire time. If it's not fair to the car owner, it really isn't fair to the shop especially if the car owner never shows up for the repairs. It's happened before.

It is shitty for both party's, and if it was a private repair I would absolutely be 100% supportive of 50% down, possibly even 100% prepay, but being an ICBC job that is between the shop and ICBC. Customer should not be involved.

ICBC won't make the shop order parts and risk being out the money if the car doesn't return for repairs. Find another shop willing to gamble on your return or leave the car at the shop for the 6 months and hope they don't charge you storage.

We have shops we have converted to cash accounts because they are so far behind on their parts payments. Maybe partially because they are stuck waiting to get paid my ICBC.

Icbc pays their vendors every 2 weeks, why would they be waiting to be paid. Private insurance I can see, they pay anywhere from 14 to 90 days

Yes technically. Or you get a police buddy to give you a box 3 lol

Might be waiting on a door moulding to complete a 20G claim, or these shops suck at paperwork.

Getting parts is worse than ever right now. Some brands are unaffected but others have it bad. My buddy waited 4 months for ford parts, he took a rental for a week but the rest of the time he borrowed a car from a family member.
