Dealership Filled My Car With 87 Octane

I just picked up a 2022 Veloster N yesterday at Maple Ridge Hyundai, another older salesman took over the original salesman to help me deliver the vehicle.

The salesman said he had a fun time getting gas in the snow in the car prior to delivery. He quickly mentioned that a quick selling point of these Hyundai's is that this car only needs 87 Octane on this car and that filling 91 and anything higher is a waste of money and that it only makes the oil and gas guys richer.

I didn't think anything of that at first until I drove home and noticed that the car smells like those 2000's white work vans. The owner's manual suggests 91 Octane only and I'm worried 70% of the first 1,000 break-in period will be on 87 Octane.

In addition, there was scratch on the dash that someone's shoe stepped or kicked the glovebox. This car is a new and just landed from a factory order.

What do you think I should ask the dealer to do to fix these issues? I messaged the original salesman but he's in the UK at the moment. Should I call the sales manager tomorrow or just email the GM / CC the sales team?

Too bad because you picked up the car already? I spent like hours inspecting the Tesla before we picked it up. Throw in some octane booster

get them to order a glove box for sure.

when you get the tank down to half, fill it with 94 and never worry about it again.

new car prob smells a little funny just burning stuff off.

They will repair/replace the dash piece as long as you notify within a day or so of delivery, call them a week later they'll just (rightfully so) ask you why you didn't notify them right away.

Also, motortrend says 87 is fine for the Veloster. So stop worrying about it and use your choice of fuel once it's at half a tank, or add octane booster.

Why is your subject line the way it is? If I read your story right, you mean "dealership filled my car with 87"

First, go back to dealer and tell them about the screw up in gas (putting 87 in when manual says 91) and make sure they fix it by giving you like $250 gas certificate. I would be pretty pissed about this. Second, yes, insist on a replacement for glove box. That is one incompetent dealership or salesman.

Modern engines are amazing. Just like my old focus ST there is no issue filling up with 87, but with reduced performance and you won’t hit factory rated numbers. Nothing will blow up, nothing will disintegrate. Though of course 91+ is what I’d be running in it daily.

As for the break in, the lot guys/boat staff/train unloaders have already done that for you. The point of break in is to mate the piston rings tonthe crosshatch of new cylinder walls. Cycling through the rpm range is important

Drove it a bit today and the car smells pretty bad, even in the cabin. But maybe it's just old fuel things. Surprised the car works on summer tires in the snow though.

All new cars smell pretty bad in my experience as a fleet manager… sulphur content in our gas is high and off-gassing from all the paints and metal and plastic surfaces

How hard are you bagging on it during break in? The sub zero outside temps right now are greatly reducing your odd of pinging. I wouldn't worry about it, if it was heat dome weather I'd add octane booster.

Of all the people I know that have acuras that call for premium, I'd say less than half do. But in the summer when it's hot, or if you are loaded up and going up mountains, run 93/94 on everything.

In the bigger picture, whether it dramatically affects your engine or not having 87 as your first tank of gas is secondary. I can be a bit of a prick when it comes to things like this ... brand new car >$35-40K ... I expect things to be perfect. Or at least dumb human errors avoided. This would REALLY piss me off. It is so simple and basic that no salesperson worth his salt should get it wrong.
