To think Trump and all these so called "conservatives" literally years ago were looking to Russia as a bastion of example, a country to emulate and aspire to become more like
Kerch Bridge, built by Russia in 2018 after occupying Crimea, has been severely damaged. Not sure how much of it was destroyed, but if they were successful this will make it pretty impossible for Russia to defend Crimea once Ukraine moves in.
It was seen as a weak point for as long as Russia had been holding the territory, but now it looks like they hit it. You can watch the beginning of this video to learn about its strategic importance
It is hard to exaggerate the significance, and symbolism, of seeing the bridge on fire. Opened by President Putin in 2018, it was meant to symbolise that Crimea was Russian.
Russia has used the bridge to move military equipment, ammunition, and personnel from Russia to battlefields in southern Ukraine.
As such, Ukrainian authorities said it was a legitimate target, as they vow to retake the peninsula.
Any attack on Crimea, where the Russian army has a massive presence, will be seen as another massive humiliation for the Kremlin.
The bridge is particularly hated by Ukrainians. Social media in Ukraine erupted in celebration on seeing the fire - one day after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 70.
Update on the bridge: The road can still be crossed, but the train track is likely ruined
If you watch videos of the explosion, they timed it to occur when a train was passing by with fuel containers. Have to assume that was done intentionally
^ are these intelligence updates trustworthy? It sounds like what Russians would do ... but it also sounds like fuel for propaganda war.
Oh it's totally propaganda. I take it as entertainment more than anything, and it kind of boosts morale about the invasion. It's nice to see when actual bad guys are doing so poorly.
They have to be based somewhat on fact though - the way things have been going have pretty much directly confirmed it little by little.
They also post maps of the contested areas which is interesting to see... Here's the latest one
Two Polish people are killed after Russian missiles hit a farm in Poland.
Of course, NATO is having an emergency meeting now in response to this situation.
-from the article:
From CNN's Tim Lister and Antonia Mortensen
Two missiles or rockets are reported to have hit a farm in Poland, near the border with Ukraine. Two people are reported killed.
Polish media showed an image of a deep impact and upturned farm vehicle at the site, near the town of Przewodow.
It's unclear where the projectiles came from.
However, the missiles or rockets landed at roughly the same time as a Russian missile attack on western Ukraine.
A government spokesperson said that Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has convened the Committee of the Council of Ministers for National Security and Defense Affairs.
I don't see Article 5 and full scale war. But intentional or not, this will still be a test of NATO. Perhaps extending air defense perimeter beyond Poland's borders like 50km into Ukraine or something.
for two polish civilians, do you think Nato will react?
It really depends on where NATO stands.
If there is a hawkish majority among NATO, all they really need is a legitimate excuse to start attacking Russia, and this missile attack on Poland totally meets that requirement.
If the pacifist faction is stronger in NATO, they will likely just issue a stern warning / ultimatum sort of thing as the immediate response. Following that, they will find ways to crank down the noose even more to strangle Russia to economic and financial death.
for two polish civilians, do you think Nato will react?
This is the question, I honestly don't think so since its only two civilians (I feel bad saying that) but if NATO has been leaning towards intervening this would be the time to do it. We won't know until the full on attack is made on Russia which would be the largest we have ever seen.
