Do people actually truly fear nuclear arms being used in the modern age?
I've always laughed when we'd get the few year mark of the media freaking out about North Korea or Iran's nuclear capabilities.
There is a reason why nuclear weapons haven't been used since 1945 (and at that against a weak enemy without any nuclear arms themselves). The idea of MAD is as true as its ever been, you will likely never see a country use nuclear weapons against another country with the same capabilities. We have been in far more tumultuous times in which they've never been utilized, so why today?
Real life isn't like movies -- Countries with nuclear capabilities like Russia or China have an entire apparatus that surrounds such access to those weapons, most leaders aren't some cartoon-like character that wishes to destroy themselves in the goal to stick it to The West.
What more likely we'll see, and currently are seeing are economic, social/political, technological war, and as someone else has said in real battle, proxy wars.
i think i mentioned this here before but cbc radio once had a guest on, or it might have been a segment from another radio show that was played on cbc radio that was a former high up in the US military. this was during the time where people were afraid that trump would launch nukes on a whim. the guy said that the system is not designed for checks and balances in the case that the president wants to launch nukes, it's designed for expediency. now i'm sure there are checks and balances in place in some regard, but it's still a scary thought.
I did recall watching a documentary about the cold war and some US submarine almost launched a nuclear missile due to a communication error.
Also I do see this as a US distraction, as they got China balloons to worry about, debt ceilings, recessions. I see this as a way to suppress other countries, use Ukraine as an excuse to power grab and set up another base in that part of the world and fight with Russia not on US soil with no risk to us.
What about the Iran/Israel situation? Especially with Iran coming close to nuclear weapons.
I still don't believe Iran would be so crazy, once again we like to paint these people as cartoonish villains, when in fact they're not.
Iran's government knows full well that a nuclear weapon used against Israel equates to the entire country of Iran wiped completely off the map.
Even Saddam in his last days didn't resort to using banned chemical weapons against the US in both of their wars, even when meeting inevitable defeat (whether or not you believe they had such weapons in the Gulf or Iraq Wars).
I just don't see it happening. The same goes for Russia/China.
It's not even worth considering the subject as we'd all be dead and gone anyways, and if not, you wouldn't want to live in such a world thereafter. Our global economies and standard of living would essentially be nullified.
It reminds me of some of my friends that are doomsday preppers, always worried and awaiting the apocalypse. I always ask them, what's the point of planning for such shit, why would you want to live in a world like, you know half of those plans would go to crap if that ever happened anyways?
Counteroffensive has begun... Russia are spread so thin they need to decide whether to stay on offense while continuing to barely make any progress, or reinforce their cities near the border.
NATO countries are saying the don't support it, but it's not their call to make.
I feel like Ukraine is playing a dangerous game here by having these attacks in Russia proper. While it is true that the attacking groups all claim to be Russians, there is no denying that they are obviously receiving Ukrainian support one way or another. (The Ukrainian gov even admitted to sharing intel with these groups.)

The average Russian has not seen the real cost of war. When they start seeing cities in Russia being attacked they will. Putin will then lose support.

I was sitting here thinking about this too... and I feel like they have no other alternative?
I mean, if you just beat Russia back out of Ukraine... what does Russia do? They just sit there mending themselves and collecting more troops and weapons and then they come back across the border again.
They literally have no choice but to take it to some border towns and try to affect Russia politically. It sounds like they're being very careful about evacuating civilians where they can, which is definitely not something Russia was doing... but I feel like politically Russia has left them no choice.
He is definitely doing "stuff" to position himself into some sort of political leadership position in Russia. It is not obvious how far he wants to take his ambitions to, but I'm sure he is vying for something beyond his current capacity as the Wagner Group boss.
There's probably still hordes of Russian men ready for the meat grinder right now. no training needed...long as you got hands to fire.
saw one of them break on the battle field...injuried and let a grenade off by his head after pulling the pin.... Same with an Rifle to under his chin with nobody on the rescue.
Every Comment on these war videos are "Well you would've being safe if you stayed home"
Alexei Navalny? He is dying a slow death in prison right now because of intentional neglect. Even if he were to get released now, his health is probably already too damaged to do anything at all.
I don't understand why he insisted on returning to Russia after recovering from being treated for a poison attack in German. I'm sure he knew at the time that what's happening now is a likely outcome of him returning to Russia, but he still did it anyway. That's a whole other level of guts, determination, and will.
