The FK8 Type R Limited Edition is supposed to be the "hardcore" model with less weight and different tires.

FK8 LE is more hardcore indeed.
Steering is HEAVY. Suspension is a tag more stiffer even compare to FL5.

Both CTR are sharp, direct, powerful (to Me)
I am more familiar with FK8 since I owned it previously for 3 years.
FL5 feel big and drive like an Accord

I usually don't miss past vehicles, but the FK8 occasionally comes to mind. I thought the GR Yaris and Corolla would be close but they don't deliver the mechanical experience that the FK8 is known for.

You can take mine up for a spin next time. It's tuned now LOL. 4th gear is hilarious.

To add on to this, the FK8 LE has a physically different (and diff pn) Adaptive Damping System sensor. I think you also have a gloss black roof (?)

Shifter is different from the prefacelift models, as all the 2020+ got a new shifter assembly. I think the clutch feels different as well.

BMW has actually switched to this chassis naming now. For instance E36 could be non-M or M3. But ever since F chassis, F30 = Non-M Sedan, F80 = M3 Sedan, F32/F82 Coupe, the 2er is weird (F22 Non-M 2 series, F87 M2)

Honda (from what I know) has always had the difference between the models. For instance, DC2 is actually Type R models only. The GSR/Base is DC4 (coupe) or DB7 (sedan). While technically incorrect, most people just say DC2 GSR.

i still think the FK8 looks better than the FL5. Its just more interesting looking. The FL5 is so BORING

Honda uses the same DC2 chassis code for GSR coupe as well.

Any updates from owners? How are you liking it? Starting to see some come available this year at msrp. Most review videos are positive unless tracking and experiencing rear diff over heat.

11th gen they pulled the punches on styling, with a more conservative approach.

I personally quite like the softer edges, a bit more like an 8th gen and prior look.

I just wish it has more interior storage room like a centre console. I love it so far.

Kelowna Toyota got their first one traded back in and I was able to go and test drive it yesterday. I'm curious how this related to other peoples experiences.

Overall there weren't too many surprises. The feedback people have been posted here gave me a pretty good idea of what to expect, but there were still some things that are leaving me wondering if it's really the right car for me. Being a used, manual car I don't know how competently the first 9k were put onto it so some of this may not be normal. I also didn't have the best choices of roads to use for a car that's meant for cornering. With that in mind I'm trying to think of other cars to test out that might be a better fit or if this is just as good as a modern car is going to get for me.

First off the positives. I loved the shifter feel. Changing gears in my Celica afterwards felt like mush by comparison. The seat height was good, the bolsters felt snug and the rest of the interior was a lot better than people make it sound. Everything I actually touched like the wheel and buttons felt really nice. The suspension was firmer but still comfortable over rough stuff. iMT was a neat trick that would make it easier for my wife to drive it if she needed to. With the seat in my position it looks like my kids would have decent space in the back. The physical buttons for things like the wheel controls, driving mode select and AWD bias felt great and were immediately easy to find without looking. The cluster (is it still a cluster when it's a screen?) looked really nice and the extra gauges were a nice touch. I was also pretty impressed with the low down power. When I got into the car it was already warmed up and it had a warning to be gentle on it because of the heat (I assume heatsoak) but it cleared quickly just going through the parking lot at 27*C out which was good. I didn't notice the lack of arm rest at all.

The big letdown was sound. Driving the car I realized all heard was road noise. No engine noise, no exhaust noise unless I really got on it and then I assume the valve opened up. I know it's stock but I still expected to hear some kind of turbo noises from up front and not just the tires on the road. Without some kind of open intake for spooly noises and a BOV this would probably kill the car for me.

The clutch was also completely devoid of feel. Again I don't know how this car was treated but I wasn't getting any feedback from it. There was a sort of a strange contrast between how good the shifter felt and how bad the clutch felt. This is also kind of a bigger deal because it's not exactly easy to swap the clutch on these. I'm hoping that this isn't normal and the previous owner just messed up the clutch or something? Any feedback on this would be great.

I suppose this part probably shouldn't be a surprise given the tires and AWD but the car didn't feel very nimble and there wasn't much excitement to be had at lower speeds. On the few corners I did find, unless I started to push up into dangerous speeds it was so easy for the car that it felt dull. I think I'd also have to adjust my driving to keep the RPMs up because the way the power suddenly came in higher up felt a bit unpleasant when I did try to push it.

Things that I knew about but was still a bit shocked by. In person the trunk floor really is cartoonishly high. I don't really get why the battery is in the middle and not just in a box behind the wheel well. I'd be tempted to try to move it. I only briefly turned on the stereo, and it was set to crappy satellite radio, but the speakers sounded pretty tinny. I know a lot of people have said they were bad but I was still surprised by just how bad.

tl;dr I think I need to try a 7th gen Golf GTI and I'd really like to try an Altezza even though they're getting a bit old now. I'm not thinking of much else that's 4 doors, manual, and lighter than a GRC.

some modern clutches just barely have any feel, wouldnt be a dealbreaker for me esp if the shifter is great

i would think it's pretty accurate to new for less than 10k mileage

Mk7 GTI also a letdown, the R is the far better car. DCT is the right trans for that car as well tbh.

If you're looking for driving engagement and don't need AWD, Elantra N's way more fun

The R being AWD I suspect would also not feel very nimble, hence why I want to try the GTI. DCT is a no go. I know some people really like them but I have to have a manual. I don't really like the styling of the Elantra but it'd be worth checking out if I can find one.

The GTI feels really soft and sloppy tbh, it's like 10% better than a regular Mk7 golf.

The R feels like a much sharper car

After street driving a GR Corolla and Civic Type R (both FK8 and FL5), I much prefer how the CTR feels even though it's FWD

I'm too poor for GR but I've been whipping a rental 23 Corolla. And it's pretty shit inside, yes lots of road noise, for like 16 inch tires, speakers suck, I was listening to xm radio too so I was expecting some sort of higher bitrate but it sounds like 96kbps. I did like the improved lane keep, but it does get annoying on the highway as it pops up that it can't read the lanes every 20-30 sec and it beeps at you. Radar cruise is pretty smooth. However the worse thing is that it does this weird Regen brake thing with the cvt? Where if you're coasting, if the car in front slows down, it abruptly slows down the car as if it was an ev with Regen. If there's no car then it will coast like normal cvt. So it makes it extremely jerky with the car random braking aggressively due to having a car in front in city traffic when you want to coast and it jerks forward when you lightly apply gas to speed back up. And the interior, plastics, cloths is like the cheapest of the cheap.

tbh I think the FK8 is almost "too good".

I'm more of an Elantra N guy (which in my mind is basically a FWD Dodge Charger. Always hoon-y and stimulating)

Put some cheap coils on, it'll be an event every time you drive it. An event trying to figure out where that noise is coming from lol

I feel the same way. When I looked for my current car, it had to be RWD or AWD, ideally with LSD on the rear. 4 doors, manual. It narrowed my choices down significantly

I have become very aware in my preparations for moving to Calgary that every single one of my cars is rear wheel drive now hahaha... not ideal.
