8 yrs for Miller? At 29 yrs old? Forget it. Even 6 is a little long. Better to trade him.

Would people still be happy with JT if he dips back to 60-70 pts a season after signing a 8.5+ mil contract?

I also think that Allvin and his staff are definitely at the team's salary cap situation and managing it the best they can besides looking at trade offers for Miller.
Dim Jim fucked up the team's salary cap structure so bad, that potential trades with other teams for Miller are gonna have to be looked at very closely in terms of salary.
We still have Lu's cap recapture penalty to pay off for one more season, the upcoming season. https://puckpedia.com/LuongoRC
Vancouver
Luongo played all of the 2010-2011 to 2012-2013 seasons with Vancouver, so the Recapture Benefit (Total Paid less Total Cap Hit) during that period is 100% allocated to Vancouver ($7,430,001).
For the 2013-2014 season, his total recapture benefit (Total Paid less Cap Hit) is $1,380,667. He was traded on March 4, 2014 to Florida, with 15% of his contract retained by Vancouver.
Therefore, Vancouver's portion for the 2013-2014 season is 100% of the recapture benefit for 154 of 195 season days ($1,380,667 * 100% * 154/195 =$1,090,373) plus 15% of the recapture benefit for the remaining 41 days of the season he was with Florida ($1,380,667 * 15% * 41/195 =$43,544). The total recapture benefit incurred by Vancouver in 2013-2014 is $1,133,917.
The recapture benefit from 2014-2015 through 2018-2019 is $3,571,335. Since Vancouver retained 15% in the trade, their portion is $3,571,335 * 15% = $535,700. Vancouver's total recapture benefit over the contract is $9,099,618 (the total of the amounts above). Since he has 3 years remaining on his contract, that total is divided by 3. Therefore, Vancouver's Cap Charge over the next 3 years is $3,033,206 per year

Yah, if Miller wants 8 ... then this GM crew is doing the right thing by trading him.

I think the Letang signing has more to do with the total $ (36.6m) ... I don't think anyone expects him to play until he's 41 but it was how Pittsburgh was able to structure his contract to make the cap hit work.

8.5m for Miller for the next 4 years would be fine, but the later 4 years will be where the contract could get fugly.

I am sure there are many other teams besides the Rangers that have offers being sent to Allvin.
Perhaps New Jersey? | Maybe Miller + Myers (salary retained) + x for Kakko + Schneider + x ?
I don't think we'll get as much as we want for Miller in the new analytics age. We don't want Miller on a long-term contract and I'm sure other teams probably don't want that either.

Miller needs to be traded for a top line guy i feel.

We do have to pay dead cap in Holtby and Virtanen's buyouts this year tho... and Halak's bonus overage.

That signing is more regarding respect than anything else. He's part of the core and has won 3 cups for pittsburgh. They want him to retire there. Chances are he will retire or be on LTIR before 41.

for sure that was a big FU to the Canucks for the way he was treated at the end. To be honest the Canucks deserved it as well.

Debrincat for 1st round 2022 (7th), 2nd round 2022 (39th), and 3rd round 2024?
Yikes we should've traded Miller at the last trade deadline for the rumoured NYR offer.
