2023 GR86/BRZ markup

I haven't owned a new car for almost a decade. I am a little rusty dealing with sales if I am honest. I know now is probably the worst time to buy a car, used or new. But I am just curious if its even possible to buy a new 86 without markups?

Went to a Subaru dealer on the weekend, knowing its unlikely to neogiate a price under msrp, but they wouldn't even give me a fixed price on the markups. Guess the market is too fluid, they don't even want to talk numbers before the car shows up in their lot.

Wait is 12 months-ish, assuming everyone before me doesn't cancel their orders. I put $500 deposit in just in case.

Assume Toyota would be the same deal?

Occasionally I see cancelled BRZ orders on Facebook marketplace - might be worthwhile keeping an eye on there if you don't want to wait. Here's one posted yesterday:

Not sure how they want the deal structured, but doesn't hurt to ask since they have one onsite.

I think the situation at Toyota is worse, and the interest rate is also not as good as Subaru if you plan to lease or finance the vehicle.

If you want a BRZ, I suggest Docksteader Subaru near Marine and Cambie area... they don't play games like that in my experience. I know 2 people who bought a 2022 BR-Z at MSRP, no mark-up or add-on games. Sales manager seems really nice.

In both cases, they didn't know numbers until it arrived either as Subaru hadn't set pricing... but as soon as pricing was set, it was at MSRP.

Interest rates for Rav 4's are 7.25% after last rate hike. No negotiations.

I'd rather pogo stick to work than pay a markup.

I thought it was illegal for dealers to charge over MSRP on new vehicles.

They can find ways around it such as charging inflated dealer fees, inflated mandatory accessories etc. etc.

You mean like Porshe? Drive it around the block and now it's used?

Dont see why 86 or brz would be marked up. Its not limited edition or anything.

They can’t, but they get around it here by putting options or add-ons to the vehicle that are marked up like crazy.

As far as I know, Toyota has fewer manual transmission cars compared Subaru. So if you are looking for a manual, your chances are better with Subie.

It is absolutely not illegal. However, many manufacturers prohibit their dealers from doing this - and that's how you end up with overpriced accessories, "used" new cars, to allow the dealer to disguise the fact they are charging over MSRP.

Haha if it was illegal, they wouldn't call it MSRP...it would just be "the price."

But most dealers here don't, unlike the states, because at least here people generally don't take well to "Market Adjustment +$20,000".

So instead they rub some vaseline on the underbody and charge you $1k for "Rust protection", and you can't say no because it's already done.

I took this photo at a Kia dealership in Jan this year. They're definitely around.
