2003 Toyota Corolla XR - engine dead at 190,000km

Sister's car - she got a good 15 years out of it but am surprised to see a toyota die so quickly. typical maintenance was done at dealerships - besides, she needs to buy a new car anyways.

anyways, what's a scrap value worth for this? and/or best way to scrap/get rid of it.

Not bad for a 1ZZ. Probably ran it with low oil and lead to its death but not uncommon on this motor. Good car for a stock and noob meet. Throw in a BEAMS engine and call it a day.

Could get a grand on CL for it probably, no rush to get rid of it? Post for 2k and take the first offer

There's junk car removal, they will pick it up for free

Could call junk yards, and see how much they will pay you for it, likely 300$, minus the 200$ towing cost you will need to pay

190k is pretty low, especially for a Corolla. My parents 05 Corolla hit 250k and it was still running strong before it got written off. Im thinking theres soo many things wrong with it to the point where they think its faster, cheaper and easier just to replace the engine than try and figure out whats wrong with it, but i could be wrong

I'd liken that most dealerships would rather re/re the engine than actually fix it.

2000-2003 1zz motor is famous for oil usage issues

That said their engine price is hilarious… $2800 for a 154k one?? I bought a 130k 1zz from an 07 Corolla for $800 less than a year ago and even that was overpaying. You can buy a 2zz with the transmission for less than they want.

I also paid $1000 for remove/replace… not the $2400 they want

So basically they’re overcharging about $3,500+

190,000km is peanuts for a Toyota. That just the break in point. Lol. Scrap value might get $100 bucks.
Dealers will throw in a used engine. It makes sense cost wise. Nobody going to pay dealership shop rate to rebuild a 2003 Corolla engine.

I dont think that would fly in todays market. I'd rather not work all day than take only $1k for engine swap. thats only about 6hrs of labour.

They quoted 16 hrs labour, which is probably 6-8 hours too much.

Me neither, but that’s what I paid less than a year ago.

I'd be happy if Toyota disposed of the car and covered the cost of the inspection.

Isn't the labour rate standardized across all Toyota dealers?

The engine bay in the Matrix has tons of room, it should be dead simple for someone to swap a good motor into it. I wouldn't pay the dealer to do it but in this market there's bound to be someone wanting to buy it, slap a motor in it, and flip it for a few bucks so I'd toss it on Craigslist.

1ZZ motor has oil burning/consumption issues, engine probably ran low on oil and wasn't caught which lead to its death
