Salman Rushdie Is Stabbed During Speech in Western New York

Quote:

A man rushed the stage and stabbed Mr. Rushdie several times just before he delivered a lecture in Chautauqua. The author spent years living in hiding after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran called for his execution in 1989, but in recent years has been living a more open life.
This is the man who once had 24/7 security because the ayatollah put a million dollar bounty on his head for the book satanic verses.

Whoever that is

CivicBlues 08-12-2022 06:32 PM

^Are you being facetious?

SkinnyPupp 08-12-2022 06:47 PM

Literally never heard of him until right now

I assumed he was a politician but turns out he's an author? Why would someone stab a damn author?

After he released his book satanic versus Iran but a million dollar bounty on his head. The UK government decided to provide him with 24/7 protection.

Quote:

The publication of the book and the fatwā sparked violence around the world, with bookstores firebombed.[66] Muslim communities in several nations in the West held public rallies, burning copies of the book.[67] Several people associated with translating or publishing the book were attacked, seriously injured, and even killed.[b] Many more people died in riots in some countries. Despite the danger posed by the fatwā, Rushdie made a public appearance at London's Wembley Stadium on 11 August 1993, during a concert by U2. In 2010, U2 bassist Adam Clayton recalled that "lead vocalist Bono had been calling Salman Rushdie from the stage every night on the Zoo TV tour. When we played Wembley, Salman showed up in person and the stadium erupted. You [could] tell from [drummer] Larry Mullen, Jr.'s face that we weren't expecting it. Salman was a regular visitor after that. He had a backstage pass and he used it as often as possible. For a man who was supposed to be in hiding, it was remarkably easy to see him around the place."[68]

On 24 September 1998, as a precondition to the restoration of diplomatic relations with the UK, the Iranian government, then headed by Mohammad Khatami, gave a public commitment that it would "neither support nor hinder assassination operations on Rushdie."[69][70]

Hardliners in Iran have continued to reaffirm the death sentence.[71] In early 2005, Khomeini's fatwā was reaffirmed by Iran's current spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a message to Muslim pilgrims making the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.[72] Additionally, the Revolutionary Guards declared that the death sentence on him is still valid.[73]

I guess some people still want to live like the year is 1022 instead of 2022

The alleged attacker is only 24. Not even in the same generation as Rushdie but when you live in the Middle Ages, you're stuck in the Middle Ages.

I didn't even know Rushdie was still active or alive even, think the last time I heard of him we were all still in high school or Uni!

I'm shocked this 24yr old even knew about Rushdie

The daily mails coverage of the story was just targetting one of his ex wives, about how she was out shopping, like wtf
