your average revscene-er are all pushing 6 figure fleets.

I'll play this game:

The total worth of my cars is probably 30K, at most. Our most modern car, a MK7 VW, is probably worth 17-18K at most. My daily driver, a 6-speed Mazda 6 is probably worth 5K even though it's a great car that needs nothing. My "fun" car is an old E46 convertible that needs work. I bought it for ~4K last year.

But, I do understand that I'm not the average poster in this thread. I'm more like an average guy who would, again, after reading this thread, wonder about their life choices.

dont do that to yourself dude. We should all be thankful that we have enough extra time to come to a internet forum and express our views while we have food in our mouths and rooves over our heads.

yeah some might have it better but who cares. Comparing yourself to others is an exercise in futility and ultimately self destructive.

Market value 45K + 18K? Good value btw.

Badhobz 04-13-2023 08:29 AM

dafaq!? you can get a modern bimmer 5 series for 20k!?

well there ya go, thats how little i know of the market.

bcrdukes 04-13-2023 09:00 AM

Certain models of the 5 series hit rock bottom depreciation for a variety of reasons so you can pick one up for $20K. Not sure how the market is these days.

The trick is to buy a house 10 years ago.

GS8 04-13-2023 10:16 AM

I have 4 cars but gave one to my dad after the transmission on his truck blew. He was planning on buying a new SUV or truck (he's over 70 y/o btw). I told him no and just gave him my big green Buick (appropriate car for him anyway). I don't see him driving for much longer so a new car payment at this phase of his life is dumb.

My 3 remaining cars are all insured and daily'd while also serving different purposes. If I had to clear my inventory, I'd keep my van simply for practical reasons, let alone styling reasons.

But as the desire for a freehold houses pushes me into other provinces where I strongly consider the decision to move forward with, at least I'll have a good vehicle to take my minimal belongings to the next chapter of my life.

No offense, but 6 cars?

I have gotten into the habit of daily gratitude journaling and it has definitely helped my mental health.

Funny enough, up until a couple weeks ago I had 6 cars... 5 now... but it's kind of a source of doom and gloom for me in the opposite way you would think.

Sometimes it makes me feel wasteful... and other times I realize collectively ALL my cars are worth less than a new 911... like even at massively overwrought current market prices I might be able to sell all of them combined for like $120,000???

Meanwhile I can go to Superstore for some milk and people's side throwaway car they don't give a fuck about are worth more than all 6 of mine combined were.

Also they're all super old, the newest one is 2004... so you ain't impressing ANYONE except other car enthusiasts. Not that it's the goal, but sometimes it's like fuckkkk what am I even doing. hahahah

At one point we peaked at I think 8 vehicles? 1991 Celica GTFour, 1992 Celica GT-S, 2007 Grand Cherokee CRD, 2000 Cherokee, 2005 Matrix XR, 1997 Prelude, 1987 RX-7 and a 2009 Konker 200SM. Total value was sweet fuck all, at the time maybe $40k tops? That was a chaotic mess though. 3 is comfortable, 4 will be a little bit of a squeeze but doable if I ever get a GRC.

I used to worry about that a lot, but with the exception of maybe your 911 pretty much all of our cars are going to end up destroyed at some point anyways. Either they'll get priced off the road or sold to someone else who will end up wrecking it one way or another. I figure if that's going to happen I may as well be the one enjoying it and risking damaging it rather than the random kid who'd end up with it.

.

I feel ya on the power windows, that's why it's strategically best to slowly jump into the next car before going from a $10K car > $60K > $180K. I remember in highschool the RSX-S was the fastest butt dyno that I can recall, heart was racing the entire time. When I finally got the RSX-S Beater as a daily, it was like a 3/10 in excitement after owning a CSX-S and S2000 for close to 4 years. Much rather pay less for maintenance and get a 2005 civic.

I realized that test driving or sitting in fun cars ruined my appreciation for the old cars that used to be a 11/10 for me. Especially when you get older and your friends start rolling into that tech / senior manager + / small business money and suddenly you have access to driving V8's and V10's.

Man, I remember from 2012 - 2021, I used to get so excited to sit in a preludes, lancers, clapped out civics, v6 accords, GSR, 350z, 370z, Type R's, STI's, WRX's, EVO's. I guess it's not exciting anymore cause at some point you sit in every car.

Should have bought a house instead of finishing highschool :lol

Instead of things that we enjoy, how about the shit that I am not enjoying right now?
The X3 went in for regular maintenance, and the rear left axle seal is leaking. 35k only. Yes it's under warranty, but god damn that's annoying.

I asked about my M3's maintenance coming up. 7500 before taxes HAHAHA. Yes it's dealer price and no I'm not going to pay them to do it, but lol fml. They want 1800 for sparkplugs (top mount air to water intercooler ftl)

What kind of work is supposed to be included in that $7500 maintenance?

If they want $1800 for doing spark plugs, I guess there can only be 3 or 4 things included in that $7500 service.

!Kodamu 04-13-2023 01:17 PM

6 cars between two people isn't alot. Some here have already had 50+ cars already.

My front brakes are due because I track and autox the car, that's $2500. The rears are 1800. The sparks are 1800. The rest is just "regular" stuff like filters, oil change, diff fluid change etc, all >$200 per item. The regular stuff I am thinking of letting them do since the car is still under warranty for another year. He quoted me $1145 for two more maintenance which would include the sparks next year. I'm thinking of just doing it as BMW warranty is pretty damn good and if you have maintenance done with them they typically let things slide as long as you haven't tuned the car, which I haven't, and don't plan to.

That's not including the 2400 I just paid for new summers this year :drunk:

That sounds reasonable because those are all wear and tear items. Got spooked and thought you had to pay for brakes + sparks + fluid changes and in addition a $7,800 electrical/engine issue

Badhobz 04-13-2023 06:18 PM

At those prices you might as well drive a Maserati or a Ferrari :ilied:

GIZZ 04-13-2023 08:10 PM

I probably had owned a dozen cars by the time I ditched grade 12. In 04/05 I saved 100G in a year selling my cars. I was looking at a gry market 288gto with nowhere to park it, instead I put a down payment on my first house. This was the right move for me, but who would have thought (some)car prices would outpace property.

a blessing and a curse i dont own a driveway because i would be tempted to fill it with more shitboxes

LP700-4 04-13-2023 10:46 PM

Fun topic...

Is there really a point in time where we as car guys really look at our cars and say "Yeah, these are the ones" and keep ourselves content forever?

I've been fortunate to be able to climb the ladder of car ownership from when I joined the forum I had a $1000 beater dodge to a TL Type-S, then B8 S4, then F80 M3 (my "dream" car)

I figured out in the M3 that if you daily drive the car it's no longer special to you. So I bought another fun-ish car to drive more (GR86) and daily EV but that didn't make sense after a while having 4 vehicles at once under insurance with my motorcycle and with the logistics of parking each and planning which car to have for which occasion and how many passengers you might have etc.

So I sold them all except the daily EV and was able to buy a Cayman GTS 4.0

Life seems simpler now with one daily and one fun/track car. Like it should be. But is it?

Can't really mod Porsche's too much apart from small things so it will stay mostly as-is and after driving the daily everyday through this winter I'm bored again. I do enjoy the cars I have now but struggle to be content and am always looking at alternatives.
