simply a new experience. I have very little time behind the wheel of an E46M3 but I liked it. I'd like to spend a year in an E90 also.

and yes - I would go for a CSL type setup if I had one.

I've seen them on Turo before but I can't seem to find one right now. Best bet is probably an existing owner?

What's your opinion on the big differences between the 36 and 46? Before I bought our house I was thinking of buying a E46M for shits and giggles and test drove a few. I really liked the car and did not find it lacking in power even coming from a F80. Ultimately the right car didn't come up and I bought a house which meant no more extra toys.

I think the 36 is (was?) underrated so it's a better deal.

Other than that, I found the 46 felt quite a bit faster, and had a nicer interior.

The 36 felt like a bit of a tin can. Maybe the others feel differently... mine had some cheap coil-overs on so it smashed and crashed over everything. I do miss that sweet inline 6. It sounded great, and was smooooooth.

Just to be clear, I've not owned an E46 M3, but I've been in a few both on the street and track.

I agree with this, but my E36 M3 was $6500 and lowered on racelands lol. Tbh, the E36 M3 feels like a faster E46 330ci, which isn't bad because I quite liked mine.

You might be able to find a dealer who will let it happen now that the recession is kicking in. Otherwise, PM me. I've got a Golf R for two weeks so you can take the FK8 if you want LOL.

When I bought my car, they refused to give me a test drive until I bitched at them about it.

Or maybe that was Joe Fiasco's price

That was Joe Fiasco's price. His new e36 M3 that you put a bid on is still for sale lol

My friend that I'm borrowing it from also has a red FK8. He absolutely hated the golf r on track. I'm curious how it fairs on a daily driver aspect

We have some mindblowingly fast Mk7 R's at Auto-X. They're stupid fast, usually top of the class. Granted the drivers are pretty damn good too, lol.

Unless its a Euro Spec 286 hp E36 M3, I rather go with the E46 M3. I read BMW really drop the bomb on the USDM E36 M3.

I haven’t tracked or autoX either cars, so my experience lies within driving them at 7-8/10ths in our local mountains/backroads. It's also been quite a few years since I've driven an E36M3, but the last time I drove them back to back, I would say in terms of driving feel/responsiveness the E36M3 wins.

You might just appreciate your E36M3 more after driving a 46 for an extended period of time hahaha

Not saying the E46M3 is a bad car - it drives amazing and the cabin is just modern enough that you can enjoy hours inside of it without feeling fatigued. But if it’s one of your fun cars and creature comfort/NVH is not at the top of your priority, then stock for stock I would choose the E36M3 for its rawness.

The E46M3’s drive is quite a bit more refined and maybe because of where I'm driving it - I'm not able to drive the car to its limits - it doesn't give me as much feedback as I'd like. In contrast with an E36M3 you can be going below impoundment speeds in the twisties, and still be able to feel the car rotating and know exactly where it wants to go.

Both cars require a good amount of driver input. It's just that the older car gives that one more ounce in comparison, and it's noticeable, especially in linking turns. That being said the E46M3 is much more of a mechanical car than modern cars like the FK8; where at times you can throw it into a corner and let it take you for a ride. It's just so good that you can trust it to pull you through time and time again - albeit with no thrills.

RE: Golf R vs Civic Type R

Initial Impressions: Both cars have R in their name, but only one feels like its something special.

The Golf R feels like the best gas version of an A to B car. In normal mode, it sounds like an EV - the car is dead quiet. All I hear is winter tire noise/road noise. In race mode, it actually sounds like a car LOL.

I have the car for the next two weeks so I will report back.

All of it with the e36. Washing it, maintaining it, driving it with nowhere to go, driving it to work, being stuck in traffic and getting thumbs up and having people want to talk about it, driving somewhere nice to take photos of it, meeting buddies for covfefe on the weekend. 99% of the time behind the wheel I'm having a good time.
e30 is a lot more tedious in traffic, but all the other stuff remains, and it's even more fun when you've got nowhere to go on a Sunday at 7am.

You read that from dudes on the internet who drive clapped out 318s in Romania though. The US spec m3 is lauded by automotive journalists from the day it came out until now. 46-80 more hp is cooler for sure, but other than plastic headlight lenses, everything else is identical. Handling is the point of the car in either configuration.

Why not get a WRX and call it a day? They're easier to get, drives pretty decent, and holds their value well. If you don't like the cladding then get a darker color like black / grey.
