That's why I couldn't transition to an electric car yet. I had a chance to get a larger vehicle a few years ago to haul the kid's and their stuff around but felt like I would miss the fun of driving a car. A lot of my neighbours have Teslas and I just couldn't get used to them.
Ended up getting a Subaru Legacy GT to fill that need of a turbo, awd sedan with decent creature comforts like a heated steering wheel and ventilated seats. Modded with better summer and winter rims, exhaust and tint. No more crazy modifications like 25 years ago but just enough to keep me feeling young whenever I fire her up in the garage. The sound of the boxer rumble on a cold start with that hint of carbon dioxide...reminds me of when I was 18 especially when I put in my 90's playlist.
If I can drive another 10-15 years in this car, the next one will have to be a hybrid or electric anyway so this is probably my last hurrah. By then I will be too old to even care I think.

For me, I don't think it's that I really "grew out" of anything, it's just that new hobbies came along (Boating, Camping, Gardening etc) and are competing for more of my time.
Like, I like cruising the boat as much, (and for various reasons) maybe even more than cruising around in my car.
In my 20's, I could spend time working on and aimlessly driving my car, because I had twice the free time that I have now and not as many other things I was into doing.

In high school I was absolutely obsessed with the VW GTI and wanted it to be my first car so badly. Countless hours spent online looking for one and watching every youtube video on all the modifications you could do to one, even watching oil change videos lmao
Earlier this year I was finally able to fulfill that with the MK8.
Popped on an exhaust and intake within the first week of ownership and man even though its one of the slower cars I've owned something about the turbo wooosh and blow off sounds combined with DSG farts and random loud ass pops from the exhaust really make it just about as fun as any M or GT car at least on city streets.
Was thinking this car would be one of those own it, experience it and move on types but having a hard time even thinking of letting it go for the moment

I've always bought cars that were "older" than my age. I never got to experience the "rice boy" fun of CIVIC SIR's and Preludes as they were always out of reach when i was in high school. When i got to university, i thought id just skip all that and get a more "adult" vehicle.
Maybe thats why i really really enjoy that FK8 CTR. It gave me the experience ive been missing for many many years. Its raw, its fizzy, and even when you start it up, it rumbles and vibrates coarsely. It just has so much character.
All my other cars are so damn refined AKA BORING that i totally get what Dark was saying when he drove that STI.
*it might be the reason why my ratrolla is so brightly colored; its just to compensate for the missing rice boy days*

Give your inner / younger self a treat and go pick up that FK8 / FL5, man. Or whatever rice boy car that is still mature enough to tickle your fancy.
We aren't getting any younger, and since you don't have kids, you don't really have to worry about leaving them anything.
YOLO, you know?
And I probably don't need to sell this to you, but if you keep it stock / stock-ish, the FK8 -- and probably the FL5 as well -- are very civil for normal everyday use.
Or maybe you wanna replace those stock 20" wheels with something smaller. Honda screwed up on that. Quote:

Lost out on taxes but that way you can experience it for a few years and lose maybe $5-10K.

Was thinking this car would be one of those own it, experience it and move on types but having a hard time even thinking of letting it go for the moment | How do you differentiate the fun between a Model 3 / Golf GTI / Cayman GTS? That's such a fun line-up where I imagine the Cayman reduces the fun of the GTI, and GTi reduces the fun of a Model 3.
To me the model 3 would be 70% of the fun of my Veloster N but 2-3x of a 2006 Honda Civic. The Veloster N is 80% of the fun compared to the S2000. I imagine the Cayman GTS is at least 150 - 200% more fun that the S2000. I feel like I want a Cayman S / GTS / GT4 because I think it should be way funner than the S2000 but I also fear that it's one of those cars you experience then let go.
If I get a used Cayman, the S2000 goes

A Cayman isn't necessarily more fun than an S2k to drive under normal circumstances. In fact, there are some aspects of the car that makes it less entertaining than an S2k or Miata when it is only being driven on the street.
The most enjoyable aspect of an MR is the way it responds to directional changes because the vehicle's weight are already all concentrated in the middle of the chassis. When you ask the car to turn, it just turns, and it does so with an intuitiveness that you won't find in any other drivetrain orientation. But when you drive normally on the street, this isn't really a trait that you'll experience a lot, so you don't really get to enjoy the biggest strength of the car in normal driving.
But yeah, because of the weight concentration, when the car let go, it just let go -- you don't have nearly as much time to react as you would in other drivetrain formats, and it is less predictable in how the car would behave when it loses traction.
But if you crave for a Cayman / Porsche / or whatever halo brand that tickles your fancy, I'd say you should go for it. Unlike the housing market, it is certainly a goal that is more easily within reach lol~

Yeah it kinda sucks driving the Porsche to the grocery store. I much prefer the R53 Mini for that kind of thing. Such a pain in the ass to get the Porsche outta the garage and all that crap. #FWP #boohoo #feelsorryforme #depreciation

Maybe I'm the minority here but I have no desire to go back to any old cars.
Don't want a convertible anymore. The sun is too strong, I prefer AC. I'm too old now for loud exhausts that drown out the conversation inside the car.
Manual transmissions make commuting in traffic jams painful.
I'm all about comfort, technology and utility/cargo space, but also sporty.
I'd love a Cayenne, RR sport, Model X, X5, something like that.
But with a family and housing costs, and gas prices, and maintenance costs, it's never going to happen! At least not this decade.

Go to a Porsche Experience Center and do a Cayman session - then you can compare it to the S2000.

718s in a perfect world is something you drive everyday and enjoy the shit out of while doing normal things like going to eat/groceries/work etc, and then with no changes can drive straight to rip up the track and set PBs. Unfortunately after tracking it, to me street driving is less fun because you know the limits are so unfathomably higher than what you can use it for on the streets. As much as people say mileage doesn't matter and all the girlfriends being saved for next guys jokes, even if it doesn't matter from a financial perspective its the feeling that additional mileage is being wasted by driving around the street.
That's where I'd argue that maybe an S2000 or GTI or STI is more fun on the street.
That being said...I do have a 718 Cayman S in 6mt coming in on trade

While not the same car, I feel the same about my 986 Boxster S. Since taking it to track, driving on the street is not so fun or as exciting as it can be. It's fine to drive out to meet up with friends, grab a coffee, dinner, go for a short cruise, but to really wring it out, it needs to be on the track.
Any how, I've moved on to a variety of cars over the years and have had a great opportunity to enjoy the all. The only car I regret selling or miss is my old 996 C2, but it also got me to where I am today. Sometimes I miss my Alfa Romeo but this is part of being a masochist (I'm dying to meet Badhobz's wife.) Joking aside, life's priorities have changed and while I don't have kids (yet) I still want to have some fun cars. I certainly miss my E30 325i and my E36 M3 and sometimes my MR2s, but I'm not lusting after them by any means to bring back any memories or nostalgia. COVID, Initial D, and Nostalgia tax is real.
My wife and I have recently enjoyed doing road trips but came to realize the Corolla iM is not the most comfortable car to drive 4+ hours so we've been thinking of picking up a larger sedan like an A4 Allroad, Lexus ES or LS, Porsche Panamera, or dare I even say it, Toyota Avalon or Crown. Oddball car options, but financials, mortgages, age, and careers have higher priority. I'm also going back to school while working next year, so that makes a huge difference.

I just wanna wide body out a 350z or a 240sx. Just utterly rice the shit out of it. 10 foot wings, neon underglow, basically need for speed underground that garbage.
Then show up for stock and noob meets all the while trying to explain why it has a clothes hanger for a wing and mugen stickers on a Nissan. Kids are gonna be crying when they see a fat balding old man on the wrong side of 40 stepping out of that thing

Is joy such an unobtainable thing , judging by this thread sounds like it. Joy is not age dependant.
Sounds like a lot of people in here don’t know what gives them joy or are unable to obtain it.

The ass on the 350z is already so wide, it's surprisingly small inside for how big the car is and the stupid chassis bar in the trunk doesn't help. I had to put the dog in the trunk lolol. Not as bad as frs but I do miss the trumpets. |
