Super interesting. Really gotta applaud those engineers for doing this and doing it within the limitations of having that batshit crazy Elon looking over your shoulder.
I can’t believe they threw everything out just because Elon said the initial one was too big. 5% reduction doesn’t sound that big but to reengineer the car is insane. Seriously a lot of really hard work went into this thing.
I still wouldn’t buy it but that’s okay. It’ll bring up the entire industry and hopefully force traditional automakers to innovate.
because in the podcast btw jason and derek mentioned it was a rapid 3 months from idea to what was shown in 2019
but the engineers were constricted to that form and materials
though back then a lot of comments were 'it's not possible without mirrors and big crash bumper, the real thing will look nothing like this etc' appears to have been defied
This was never designed to appeal to the truck owner's market. I see it as more of an engineering exercise/halo product, and caters to the "lifestyle/baller" crowd (like the Rivian, Raptor, or TRX). I can appreciate the engineering that went into it, but that's it.
For what is largely a testbed of new technology (DBW steering and 48v electrical arch) it seems like a huge waste of money to do it this way - just build a new Model S instead. And neither DBW steering and 48v arch are THAT hard to do - it's about commitment and resources.
The truck itself seems pretty useless as a truck - a Rivian is far more practical for the outdoorsy folks, a TRX/Raptor is far more capable as an off roader, a F150/RAM EV is far better for work purposes. This is just a wank job like the Hummer - it serves no purpose for what it is.
Oh and it's the ugliest thing on the road now. It's like what would happen if a M2 were a truck but worse.
+1 for man child, I think it satisfies my inner man child too that's why I'm so drawn to it. Like this is something you would draw as a 5 year old kid and he actually ended up to be the world's richest man to make things happen. BYD but he actually built his dreams.

So you are saying you need to buy 3 trucks?

Yeah they should've made a van, it would've been a hit and reach a wider market. Commercial, shuttles, vanlife etc
i dont know man, its a bit too attention-grabbing at this moment. it'll have to do volumes similar to the 3 and the Y in order to blend in and become commonplace enough so that cops cant easily track and identify the vehicle
if i was a gangster the last thing i want is something that stand out-ish.
I'm assuming unless it's NIJ certified with an actual classification it's not officially considered bulletproof/armoured so you wouldn't need a permit?
On an unrelated note I found this picture of a bulletproof Lambo being tested, I can't imagine how cramped that thing must be after the armour is added.
