if i wanted to go to edmonton, id drive either a fun car (hitlerbox, or ratrolla) or id just hop on a plane and save myself the hassle and gas $$. Air canada from YVR to YEG is like what? 150 bucks for a round trip? thta wont even cover 2 tanks of gas and hotel.

We put 6 friends in a diesel GL for Banff road trip twice

Made stops on Radium, Golden, etc + needed car for hikes anyways

Drive really wasn’t too bad in the Scat Pack / GL but both had perfect on center feel, instant multi-gear lockdown for passing, and solid seats.

Regardless what SUV you have, it's hard to fit snowboards or bikes without resorting to a rack system of some kind. Bikes are ok as we do that in the summer and there isn't much dirt to worry about. Snowboard/ski OTOH is a PITA whether you use a rooftop rack or trailer hatch rack. Yes, first world problem perhaps. But it's just so much easier with a truck. And the reason why I ordered CT back when it was announced was that it checked all the boxes.

It's an EV; no need to worry about gas price.
It's got a bed; load whatever junk in it.
It's got a cover; no need to worry about stuff getting wet/dirty.

I don't ever tow anything, so the idea was never about towing. I just needed a truck to load soil, plants and bikes in the summer and snowboards in the winter. All without having to mess around with racks or whatever accessories I might need.



It wasn't too bad. Our first stop was Revelstoke, between home to there, we stopped by Merritt to charge for about 30min, which we spent on having lunch at the Denny's right by the SC and I actually left to move the truck before lunch was done as it said I had enough to continue the trip.

At Revy, the hotel we stayed had a charger, so charged to 100% and made it to Banff with about 30% left. Then in Banff again we left with 100% and made it to Edmonton without stopping. We did arrive with only 5% to the hotel, but no stop was needed. The drive back home from Edmonton had more stops. I think we stopped 3 times in total and spent about an hour and half charging, but we planned all the charging stops as meal breaks and really didn't waste much time as we were never waiting in car but rather with some activities.

I like giving hehe shit sometimes, but for him he's thought this through and it makes sense.

I'd be a little wary about stretching it down to 5% at arriving to Edmonton though. How many km is 5%? If you run into bad weather that 5% would become zero quite quickly?

We don't use racks for snowboards as it fits inside the car for the most part, but then the problem is after riding, you can never get all the snow off the board and everything is a soggy mess. You either have a dirty soggy mess in the bed, or a dirty soggy mess inside the car. And I agree biking is less of it issue unless you are driving when it's raining. I had to drive home from camping in the rain with our bikes behind on the rack. The bikes were disgusting after.

The Tesla route planner is crazy accurate, 5% is 5%.
Accounts for rain, headwind, elevation, etc

FWIW I set minimum charge level to 15% when planning
And would not try this is any other EV except BMW.

As Astulzer mentioned, Tesla's navigation planning now is incredibly accurate and it's constantly updating given the available information. I have yet to be in a situation where Tesla said I was going to make it and didn't make it.

And quite frankly, I'm never worried if I'm along major hwys. The route between Banff to Edmonton is filled with Superchargers along the route. Even if for whatever reason I couldn't make it, the nav will re-direct wayyy before I'm even close to running out.

Furthermore, I did once when I first started driving EV (Model 3 SR+) ran to super close of running out because I drove to a relatively remote area in BC that didn't yet have many DC chargers. The FLO DC charger I wanted to charge at Nakusp, BC (the only one in the area back then) was broken when I got there. What I ended up doing was, since it was middle of the night with no other car in sight and IIRC the speed limit was 80, I did the entire way from Nakusp to Vernon hypermiling at 50km/h. The system constantly popped warning that I might not make it and it took way longer than what I planned but I managed to arrive with 2% to SC.

Range anxiety is something that maybe other brand's EV might have... but for Tesla, unless you are going into middle of nowhere, it's really a thing in the past within US/CA major hwys.

Tesla camp mode drains anywhere between 10-20% a night depending on how cold it is. And it would actually keep the car warm without worrying carbon monoxide poisoning. So really is no big deal. And whether it’s golden or Revy, within 100km east or west, you can find chargers every 50km or less. Heck, going up Roger’s pass there’s a warning sign saying check your fuel as there’s no service station next 80km, but there are 2 separate DC chargers locations in that same stretch.

Heat is like 3kw max, battery is 1-200kwh so u can run max heat for 2 whole days or realistically for a week and still drive 100km.

In big distributions like hurricanes in Florida this year, electricity is usually restored before fuel supply

I was going to say you'll have an easier time finding gas on the back routes to get around a closure but iirc even places like Woss and Sayward have a couple chargers now, so you're likely fine as long as the power doesn't go out.

I do this as well. Came in handy during wildfire season in the last two years. We left the B&B that morning with 80km of gas thinking that the next gas station would be close enough. But we had to detour and had to get through a backroad section. Fantastic detour... but I was down to 20km with probably 40km to go. With a 25L jerry can, I topped up 2 FK8s and an E92 M3. I learned that day that the E92 M3 consumes gas at the same rate as the FK8s... but the FK8s have a 42L tank lol.
