My 20' tandem axle travel trailer would basically max out the tacoma, dry.
It's nice to have headroom and flexibility. At the time we were looking for a truck (2019, before the big pandemic surge in truck prices), tacomas were pretty much the same price. Might as well get more truck for the buck. We didn't know what size of trailer we'd eventually end up getting, and I'm glad we went with the size we did. Anything smaller would have been just too small. It's also nice to go to the soil yard and fill up twice as much as the small truck used to.
Also now after owning it for 4 years, I realized the interior space of the crew cab is nice. (originally thought we'd just want an extended cab, but so glad we got the crew)
We're fortunate enough that we don't need to daily it.
I personally get no enjoyment out of driving it though, it's a la-z-boy on wheels.

Even as a bigtime truck hater, I have to admit at one point in my previous job when we leased a brand new Ram 1500 fancy whatever edition with the 5.7 in it, the Mercedes influence on the interior was extremely noticeable and I did kind of enjoy driving around East Van above everyone mumbling to myself about hemispherical combustion chambers

Kinda want a f150 now.
I like the dip in the window sill so you can lean your arm out of it. I like the fold out center console so you can take a farmer business meeting and even that little metal stick in the tailgate to help old fat fucks like me to get into the box
They really thought of everything

I like the Taco but I don't understand why it's so popular.

Perceived Toyota "reliability/indestructibility"?
(Just look past those 2011-2017 years where toyota was replacing entire frames under warranty.)

Reputation and reliability...
I know it's all anecdotal and I'm sure lots of F-150 owners have no problems... but I used to run a vehicle fleet that had a lot of Taco's and F-150's in it and the maintenace folders for the F-150's were an inch thick after 3 years whereas the Taco's never had anthing but mileage reports in them. I think we went through at least 15 Taco leases and I never once saw a mechanical or warranty issue. The F-150's were just constant recalls and problems. Super annoying. The V8 is better but the 3.5 ecoboost... fuckkkk

I've been pretty lucky so far, only non wear-item (Ie tires/brakes) issue I've had to date was the water pump, which I just did myself last July.
The advantage of the last year of the model generation I guess, most of the TSB's and recalls already taken care of. My dad certainly had a few more issues with his 2013 ecoboost, but he's pretty modded. The (aftermarket) boost pipe blowing off the (aftermarket) throttle body is hardly a ford problem :P

I always thought the interior quality of the F150s I got was pretty meh, but the Taco I had once was dangerously gutless on the highway and there weren't even any hills where I was. My parents Frontier was way nicer to drive despite being considered a dated design. But as they learned, in BC you need to have a fair bit of overhead between your towing capacity and what you actually want to tow if you plan to go out of town. Quote:

Out the sides isn't great either when the bottom of the window is above my cars roof lol.

I will never buy a Ford. I had a brand new 2021 F150 XL as a work truck. It was fully loaded with an aluminum canopy, job materials, and tools.
I got flagged to stop the truck since the rear passenger wheel was visibly wobbling when the truck was in motion. I pop open the hub cap to find 4lug nuts on backwards, halfway off of the wheel stud and 2 lug nuts completely off.

I have a hard time believing it came out of the factory like that. You can even see witness marks on the cones of the lugs that it had one point been torqued up properly.
Someone removed that wheel and put it back wrong.

How is a hub that rusty on a brand new truck?!?! You can't even put lugs on that way, what is there to tighten them with beyond your hand?

with the shape or the nuts and the wheel you couldn't do that very easily, you'd have to really want to put them on like that.

The Taco is a basic bitch truck that will last you forever if you plan to keep it that long. I've had my F150 almost 9 years now though and it's been great.

It's not just that.
It's the fact that you're not longer contained by pavement. That's a feeling of freedom that I never got, taking my S2000 and the R6 through mountain twisties. It's about knowing that you could go wherever the heck you want. Wherever you see, you can go. Not just veering off the beaten path: making your own path. Literally and metaphorically. Nothing holds you back.
Think of the first time you rode a bike. The first time you drove a car. It's like that: it feels like a whole new level of freedom.
Also, parallel parking is now easy mode because curbs are no longer a thing.
Remember how we had to crawl across speed bumps diagonally or else car would scrape? Now you don't even have to slow down for speed bumps; you don't even feel them. Unless you want to, but it's your choice!

I mean most of it applies to higher clearance and less about truck
lift a sienna and off you gooo
I tried the ‘not bound by pavement’ freedom thing at drive-thru, felt like a total jackass so didn’t do it again |
