interesting piece, I have a Model 3, this could easily become my 2nd EV. However I doubt too many people like that large glass roof without any blinds, also the interior is so small for its size.

trollface 11-06-2023 06:08 AM

Dont those roofs usually have electric tint?

JDMDreams 11-06-2023 07:17 AM

Tesla has glass roof and it's fine, it's so tinted

Starts at $56k or so in Canada: https://shop.volvocars.ca/en/search?...tion=V5H%202N7

Surprised it comes with so much power considering the size and cost - they could have easily gotten away with giving it 200hp/280hp and no one would have objected.

This would be an interesting fit for me but the wife insists that we need a car that comfortably seats 5 for the day when my parents or hers live with us and we need the space (she's largely right though).

Badhobz 11-06-2023 08:23 AM

what the heck are with these performance numbers. why does anyone need a 3.4 sec commuter car?

twitchyzero 11-06-2023 09:35 AM

wouldn't this just cannabilze most of polestar's sales?

interesting the base trim gets different battery chemistry

Wife is very keen on this car. Will need to test drive... and if she gets the other job which requires in-office time might look at getting it for reals...

JDMDreams 11-06-2023 11:27 AM

The back seats looks very cramped, like cx30 size? :suspicious:

radeonboy 11-06-2023 11:27 AM

I think it's reasonably priced when you compare it to a top-spec Kona EV / Soul EV. Those Korean models are not as popular as a Model 3, but I see enough of them around town to suggest there's a market for something this size.

I have no use for this, but this would be on my radar if I'm looking for a commuter EV.

What an old-man thing to say! You telling me you wouldn't have loved your base-model Sentra to have had 400hp, 3.4s 0-60?! :D

But yeah, I guess it's just a business thing: relatively cheap to get more power out of an EV, so manufacturers extract more value proposition this way vs ICE.

Apparently they optimized for front-seat legroom at the expense of the back seat area. Kinda confusing to me why/how that works though: can't you choose your own adventure there just by biasing the front seats fore and aft? *shrug*

asian_XL 11-06-2023 02:59 PM

Richmond C-lai will say that Richmond will snow, definitely need 4 wheel drive so car won't fall into the ditch.

We sat in the one on display in North Van last month. It's not bad, bigger than CX30. About same as Audi A4 size? Somewhere between Mazda 3 and CX-5 sized.

Traum 11-06-2023 05:10 PM

A4 sized would make it viable for my general family use, and I rather like the build quality I saw in the Polestar 2, even though that car turned out to be too cramped for me.

So this EX30 is certainly an enticing option for me to keep an eye on!
(Mind you -- I'd much rather go for a sedan of the same size since the lower cg makes them a lot less iffy to drive at speed.)

RabidRat 11-06-2023 05:37 PM

^ unfortunately this might be too small for you :(

The Polestar2 and XC40 are dimensionally similar, so I think the EX30 would be likely more cramped for you than the Polestar 2.

JDMDreams 11-06-2023 05:56 PM

I've always wondered if polestar or lolvo will even survive, considering lolvo doesn't have the best reliability, parts seem unobtainaium after a few years cuz the don't share with anyone else? And how small volume they are, so there's not much used options to choose from. Like how many people buy polestar vs the others. Do they even sell enough to recoup the development cost? Or are they just burning the Chinese money.

Badhobz 11-06-2023 06:40 PM

I saw a few “build your dreams” cars in Hong Kong. They look quite premium both inside and out. The only thing to complain about is they don’t exactly stand out vs anything else on the road and I’m sure that Chinese infotainment is a joke

Think Volvo's SPA / CMA models will be okay since all these gas cars share the same inline 4 engine. Their mechanical reliability is questionable but shouldn't transfer over to their EVs. I think they have a good chance of surviving the EV generation with backing from a giant conglomerate like Geely.

Besides some built-in Engrish mistranslations, I heard they're quite decent.

Different architecture though - the Polestar 2 and XC40 are on the same ICE-based chassis (CMA iirc), and aren't packaged as efficiently as a pure EV chassis (SEA or whatever Geely calls it) that is the EX30.

Having been in both the P2/XC40, the EX30 is noticeably more spacious in width and knee/legroom. The lack of wiring/speakers in the door also means that the door cards are thinner and there is more room side to side. The cargo space suffers as a result of optimizing for passenger space, as it has a smaller trunk length wise.

Again, best to go sit in one in person if possible. The P2/XC40 Recharge is a gen 1 product, this is a gen 2 product so quite different IMO.

I think the Porsche infotainment system is worse.

Badhobz 11-08-2023 07:24 PM

yes, that taycan in hong kong screwed me quite hard. Not only could i not keep the map on the screen while i twiddle around with the AC controls, but occasionally when i go back to the map, it would lose the destination.

And that german/english accent for map navigation sounds terrible. Like female Arnold yelling at you to get to the choppah

roastpuff 11-14-2023 10:45 AM

Well, we put our money where our mouth is/was. Deposit (refundable) placed, the wifey pushed pretty hard on wanting it lol.

We'll see what the buying/delivery process is like, and if I hate it upon test driving it.

Going to aim for the Twin Motor Ultra, but might drop down to Single Motor Ultra if that feels fine driving it.

Badhobz 11-14-2023 05:50 PM

You’re not replacing your beautiful vag-gone with that are you ?!?!?!
