I'd never want to play in a Canadian city if I were a professional athlete.

Our sports media is rabid, there isn't much else going on from a sports teams perspective so all eyes are on you, the lack of anonymity, cold weather, sprinkled with high taxes and real-estate costs.

It's a lose lose compared to any of the other major American cities.

Nevermind all half these guys want to do is fuck constantly, imagine being the guy in Toronto in December taking some 10 home and getting out of your parka and turning the heat on, then she's gotta rub her hands together for 5 minutes so they're warm enough to touch your junk that you're simultaneously trying on sheer willpower alone to get out of its inverted -20C state

Or you're the guy in Florida in December having a pool or hot tub party at your mansion and puling a thong to the side whenever you feel like it lol

Yeah Toronto realistically never stood a chance lol

I guess the only solace BJ fans can take is that you aren't guaranteed winning shit in baseball no matter how much money you spend. The Mets owner went insane last year with the highest payroll ever and they didn't even come close to the playoffs.

I would have went nuts if Ohtani got signed, but sitting back and looking at it, two Tommy John surgeries, can't pitch this coming season, will be ever be the pitcher he was before? You're one more injury away from a 700 million dollar DH.

Anyways that's my butt hurt opinion and I'm sticking to it lol

this guy deferred almost all his income to after his 10 year contract so its bringing his aav down to 46-48m this also means he is getting paid only 2m per year giving the dodgers all the ammunition to just stack the team

i really hope these guys get swept by the rockies on an annual basis

Seems a weird way of doing it, I mean it's a sweet deal for the Dodgers as they are reportedly paying him 2 million a year for 10 years, and then 68 mill a year from 2034-43 so with whatever inflation is by then that helps them out I suppose.

I can see this becoming banned for future contracts if this becomes the new normal though.

this has to be addressed on the next cba else its really a 2 horse race for the league: yankees and dodgers, especially true when the regional sports networks down south r imploding everywhere except for the hot markets (LA, NY, CHI, PHI)

with a league that has no salary cap and floor, its hard to convince people to be interested in the game when its seemingly favouring the rich teams

Hahaha so it's okay to defer $680 million of your $700 million contract in the MLB to cicrumvent the cap???? But in the NHL they can go back and say naughty naughty about a goalie's contract they originally approved in the first place and penalize a team?

Shit's wild.

the lame argument they make is it will not be beneficial for the players in the long term cause it discourages these monster deals from being made

this type of bs is what stops the game from growing

yah, I'm just thinking ... who's going to want to be GM of the Dodgers in 10 yrs? When you have a $68M AAV salary on your cap for a bench warmer? Epitome of mortgaging your future for today.

no man they wont be faced with that cap, they just need to pay up which really is a non-issue.

the cap hit is all calculated now what they are getting his with on a per year basis is:
68m (that was deferred) brought to present value @5% --> about 41m
2m they are paying him throughout his contract length

in total it comes about to like 43m on the actual cap hit.

ohtani literally cheat coded this for any team he was gunna sign with (lets be honest it was always the dodgers) so they could stack the team

dodgers would have no issue paying the money now or in the future cause they're a big market team, their pockets are so deep they dont care

not like the jays would have it hard to do that too but since everyone in america hates toronto we always get shafted when it comes to bringing in superstars.

^ not really understanding this Ohtani math.

So if it doesn't help the cap why do this? You're saying it is $41M annual cap hit but he is only getting paid $2M for the first 10 yrs? Doesn't make sense. Only way it makes sense is if it helps the cap now so they can surround him with more good players.

Does MLB even have a hard cap? Or do they go with luxury tax like NBA?

Well with the deferrals his cap hit is 46 million instead of 70 million each year so that is saving money and allowing them to keep signing more players as well as avoiding paying more for going over the luxury tax.

Reading up on it it's not uncommon to defer payments in baseball for cap reasons it's just that the amount they are doing it with Ohtani is unprecedented.

MLB doesnt have a hard cap, it has what they call "luxury tax" which kinda has limiting effects because the penalties are monetary so deep pocket teams like dodgers or yankees can cont to pay them if they so wish to.

from an actual budget standpoint, ohtani is costing the dodgers 2m right now, they frees up quite alot of money to go after other players in contrast if they had to pay him the full 70m.

the second benefit is by deferring the 68m payment to 10 years later and wish how mlb calculates the value of the contract, it took a discount on the contract value to calculate the total contract value (as if it were to be paid today - finance stuff: net present value).

overall the second benefit is instead of eating a 70m cap hit they are taking a 43m cap hit for ohtani which means they got room before they hit the first threshold of the luxury tax - a scheme to save more money

this is why its bs because big market teams can afford this whilst like 20+ smaller market teams cant pull this off - aka stack the team like the yankees did back in 00s

MLB might be dying, but the sport isn't. All around the world, baseball is as popular as ever. Just have to watch the World Baseball Classic. Baseball at all levels. Not going away any time soon. Like all other sports, focus is always at the professional level. Amateur leagues and minor league play is awesome to watch.

Golf, not so much (a big fuck you, to tiger woods).

Damn the Dodgers are balling out of control, they just signed Yamamoto to 12 years 325M and he's never pitched a game in the MLB.

over a billion for two players, man baseball is out of control. No one should ever get paid close to that much for a sport they love playing.

It's just so wrong.................. NY Yankees. Soto, Judge, Stanton, Rizzo, Verdugo, LeMahieu, Cabrera, etc. Not fair, damnit.

Then, Gerrit Cole.

Still, no guarantee of a World Series............... fuck 'em
