Did spring cleaning on my FIL's TSX - used to be mine until 3 years ago - swapped summers back on, detail in and out. He sure has aged that car since he took it off my hands - scuffed up the front and rear bumpers real good, the inside and the trunk are just full of junk, and he rarely washes it.

Still drives real nice though - great little motor and the auto has really good programming. Not bad for a 2007 car.

It's a similar story with my dad's Civic X. It's an 8 year old car now, and esp in the last few years, he has scuffed and dinged it up good. I keep telling myself that at some point if he screws up big enough, I'm gonna get my mom and my brother to gang up on him, and "convince" him to give up driving. So far, it hasn't come to that, and I am really glad it hasn't come to that yet.

I know that in some cases, once you take away a senior's driving privilege, they really go downhill fast.

Like I said, I am totally not looking forward to that day. And when that day comes, I don't even know what I'm gonna do with a dinged up senior car like that either.

I think this is an Asian dad thing.

My dad has had his Lexus RX300 for God knows how long. He doesn't wash it. It's got all kinds of dents, scratches etc. The trunk is full of junk. But for him, as long as it runs and doesn't have any mechanical issues, he doesn't GAF.

The idea of an oil change is excruciatingly painful to him. He doesn't even care about winter tires (we forced him to get a set a while ago.) The irony is he is in the automotive industry and this was a guy who used to work on Indy cars back when it was still in Vancouver. :seriously:

Nice rims on that TSX

My dad is still on winters, he's waiting on parts for his rear brakes so he'll get it swapped out at the same time.

He's been thinking of getting something new. He's had his Genesis Coupe for 11 years now and will need to start picking up the grandkids come Sept. He's thinking of getting a BMW i3 and I'm like good, that's so much more useful as a car.

truth. My dad is a cheap asian as well and I had to take matters into my own hands to do ANY maintenance outside of an oil change like differentials/spark plugs etc

Oof. Yeah, my FIL uses some garage mechanic and I'm 99% sure all he does is oil changes and nothing else. Looking my logs before I passed the car to him it's been 5 years since a brake fluid flush and it's due for a brake service and probably spark plugs, coolant flush, and like a valve adjustment. I figure that unless I take it in myself and pay for it that none of that happens.

we had to do that with my dad, his car was so banged up and he didn't recall hitting stuff/scraping the car. eventually his car wouldn't even start anymore cause he didnt' maintain it and we had to scrap it
