Still loving the echo. Got my other two tires in (Sailun R01 sport) and the car feels amazing. I have another two rpf1’s with bald track tires I’ll keep for autox. I found a cv boot torn, brand new axle cost $57 each LOL so I think I’ll wait and order a bunch of parts to do a refresh on suspension. Maybe lowering springs too

Edit why’s the image quality so poor on RS? Seems fine here where I uploaded it https://ibb.co/2sv5D9c

Given that most of these cars all have the same drivetrain, do you notice much of a difference between all of them personality wise? Or platform wise? Maybe moreso the hardtops, obviously the soft-top isn't going to feel the same.

I have collector plates on a 1968 Mustang and a 1994 MR2 Turbo right now...

1968 Mustang is <$300 a year, 1994 MR2 Turbo is $4xx a year. Both of them have third party coverage with ICBC, although I think Hagerty (for example) has much better coverage for third party ie: you can set your payout value if anything happens to it.

I'd imagine the Mercs are about the same as my MR2 in the $400-ish range.

You must have another car under regular insurance to qualify for the discount though... and you can't drive to work or school, not even once a month.

What's the process in finding out if your car isn't lumped in with the regular trim, instead you have a limited production car and can get collector plates before waiting 25 years?

Prove from the manufacturer there was less than 1,500 units made WORLDWIDE... not just North America..

OR... from a marque that's defunct/dead. Saab for example.

ICBC is kinda stupid with things though like they will say a E63 AMG is unique from other E series, but they will say a Ford Focus RS is just a Focus trim package. There's no rhyme or reason to it sometimes.

E63 is a newer generation than the other two so it's alot stiffer, louder, and more fun to drive on a twisty road.

CLS63 is very comfortable and high build quality feeling.

CLK63 is a small car so very fast - but does not have the sharpest handling.

It's like $138 basic but total of $900 per year with collision and comprehensive for the CLS63.

All that matters is what it says on your ICBC registration paper: What is the Make and model?

Ford dealers would have called the focus RS a trim level no?

So in trying to combine your info with 68style's. Compare icbc papers of your trim vs the regular trim, if different, then approach manufacturer to try and get a letter with the worldwide production numbers. If the numbers come out 1500 or less, then you should have no problems applying? Also, does the production numbers need to be less than 1500 for the entire generation, or just 1 specific year will work.

I thought it had something to do with whether or not the manufacturer had given it a different chassis code to call it a different vehicle or not, but I could be wrong.

here's a direct comparison

my same coverage 97 M3 is $1220 per year (all in)

Your collectors are about ~60% of regular coverage price. I wonder how consistent that number is.

For me - the price difference allows me to do whatever mods I want (I don't really want to revert my car to stock right now), and be able to drive it to work (I do on occasion). Tempting though - as I use the car less and less it may be time to think about setting up the car to qualify.

I have to say the prices being through around by the Merc and Bimmer guys on collector's make it a lot less attractive.

The rates on my Mustang and MR2 are so low it's not even a question whether to keep them on it. Mustang is also old enough that it's on modified collector plates (1974 and earlier) so it's very modified and still qualifies as long as it passed a provincial inspection at the time I got them.

I think at the time I went to collector plates on my MR2 to the tune of $400 it was $1400 a year for regular, but I've been on collector plates for so long now I don't know what the regular rate is anymore.

I thought so too. I heard people were getting 300-400 for the year but when I first got insurance I paid $600 and now its up to 750. 0 Accident history ~20 years driving experience

Obviously could be cheaper by removing collision/comp but the peace of mind.

Crazy how the producer pays 1200 for the year. When I was between cars and the M3 was my daily full coverage was 2300 (to/from work under 15km)

I thought it was sub $500 too. Friend had collector plate on an old 5 series non M and it was less than $500. I didn't ask about coverage though, just price.

I imagine stuff that's more expensive on collector insurance would also be more expensive than usual for regular insurance too. My Grand Cherokee and Celica are only ~$900/yr each for pleasure use but they're also cheap vehicles to begin with.

Similar to Underscore's comment, I believe it has to do with the mfg. I'll speak regarding BMW, since I don't know anything about MB or Audi, but the M3 isn't a just trim for the 3 Series model. The M3 is a standalone model.

Tho on this note, per the current site, ///M also includes M340i etc. Similar to that unfortunate matter, the Type R is just a Honda Civic (rip elitism /s).
