| Preemptive healthcare
Here’s a real boomer thread..
So, at the end of the day if you could eat a clean as possible diet and exercise everyday it’s probably the best thing you could do for yourself, but let’s get real.
Also.. even that does not guarantee you can avoid diseases such as cancer, etc
In recent years I’ve been getting full blood work every year including testosterone, kidney function, etc. Also consistently monitor blood pressure.
Lately I’ve been looking into 3rd party services and came across this heart fit clinic in Burnaby. I believe I had heard ads on the radio but reviews online are also quite good. You can do quite extensive cardiac testing for a cost. Even things like telemeres etc. I have to look deeper into the actual tests they are offering but it looks appealing on the surface.
Pricing:
I haven’t looked into it recently but I remember reading about full body MRI’s as well. However, there seemed to be some discussion relating to that about then seeing benign things within your body, and having that on your mind and maybe operating etc. when you wouldn’t have known or be effected by it otherwise.
Anything else? Anyone do anything more than blood tests?

Just did my blood test and got my results with a clean bill of health but always wondered if there is more than just the standard blood test. Now you have me thinking and will inquire.

1.5-6k fuck me
I have a coworker that does something like this, il need to ask him again when im back in the country.
He said he did that kind or test (or maybe it was mri) to foresee his future of health because his family had x issues thru generics.
Alot of those tests can apparently find out serious issues years before its too late.
That opens the question tho, how much are you willing to spend today for something that may or may not be an issue in the future. And the costs my coworker was telling me were steeeeeep. 3k blood test > 2k mri > 2k consultation with other tests > surgery > recovery > etc etc etc
Personally i get a blood test every 5 years > doctor doesnt call > no call = good news > repeat

My wife’s friends whole family just flew to Taiwan to get full body MRIs done. $600.
They found something in the young guy now have to wait through the Canadian system to get checked out/processed. I thought it was kind of nuts, but at the same time I think I’d do something like that. I’m far from a hypochondriac but the rate our healthcare system is going it may not be a bad idea to search outside our system now and then.

I don’t know what you’re trying to live for, but I got nothing to live for other than myself. If I die, wife’s good to go.

You should get these done in Taiwan.
For the price you are paying for level 5, you get airfare, the same thing done in Taiwan, plus CT scans, heart artery imaging, colonoscopy... and pretty much everything there is to test on a human body for preemptive measures... with some money left.
Something that my parents do every two years or so.

But I'm kinda the same way. Seeing as my family has the gene pool of a tailings pond, the future ain't missing much.

I don’t know what you’re trying to live for, but I got nothing to live for other than myself. If I die, wife’s good to go. | I'm the same way except I don't have a wife and no kid.
I know so many people who work out, diet eat healthy and have gotten cancer or have had heart attacks. I don't work out, I eat bad food (very little veggies) but other then an odd kidney stone every 1-2 years I'm healthy.
For me life is too short to worry what could happen, yes it's way better off to take care of yourself but so many people get so obsessed they don't seem to enjoy life anymore. One of my buddies will go to the pub and have a salad and a vodka and soda instead of a beer and wings and I so see he doesn't really want that but needs to keep his health nut wife happy.
We all are going to die one day, all I know is when I'm on my death bed I don't want to live with regrets especially about things you really have zero control over.
That being said I so need to start working out, be healthy and lose 50lbs but that's easier said than done.

If anyone is seriously interested in getting this done, I'd recommend you doing it sooner rather than later. IMO the Taiwanese health system is completely unsustainable financially, and sooner rather than later it is gonna go bankrupt if the way it is run just stays the course. Of course, the Taiwanese gov wouldn't let that happen, which means they are definitely going to have to dramatically reform it.
It makes absolutely no sense that they are charging foreigners so little money to use their public health system. It's almost like they are begging you to abuse their medical resources and make the Taiwanese public foot the bill. Quote:

I've heard a lot about these Taiwanese workups. A friend was going to do one too. Is it really just paying for piece of mind for hypochondriacs?
So what happens if they discover something? Do you just go back to your GP in Canada and say, hey, scan this <portion of my body> I need a 2nd opinion? Feign symptoms of something so they order tests? We all know docs here won't do shit unless you're basically in pain or coughing up blood.
p.s. I was joking about the whole RS in 2035 threads for geriatrics but now I see we're well on our way there!

Get a rapin' before they close their legs boys!!!! | Well... for us, even before the pandemic, surgery wait times have been steadily going down hill. And now, our entire healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, and at least in theory, we don't provide cheap/free medical services to non-PRs / non-citizens. Quote:

On the other hand, for our generation and beyond -- or at least our generation -- we are pretty much guaranteed to collect less than what we have paid into the plan. All expectations are -- contributions from taxpayers are only gonna go up instead of staying the same, and the eligible age for collection is gonna go up (ie. delayed to 67? 70?). I am not sure whether we can still call a system like that "sustainable" -- it isn't gonna collaspe, per se, but we are certainly getting ripped off.

| That's not entirely true, before the pandemic when I had a broken cheekbone that was jammed into my jaw muscle and was waiting for surgery in Richmond, I went to the hospital 2 days in a row and did full prep for surgery only to get bumped and sent home when a China mom was having an emergency c-section for her citizenship baby lol... took until the 3rd try to reset my face. Was very pleasant spending a total of like 96 hours in excruciating pain unable to open my jaw.

These types of tests to a degree should be covered by the public system, but alas, we don't emphasize preventative care, but rather reactive care.
We're leaving to Thailand on vacation in 2 weeks and plan to get some testing done for shits and gigs in Bangkok. Full body MRI are around $500-$700.
I'm planning on only doing a full blood work panel, and nutrient testing.

I'd go and independently research how accurately each of those things can be assessed by a blood test before paying to get it done. I know there was a big thing a few years back about a type of blood testing for allergies that really just gave you a list of everything you'd eaten recently and was total bunk.
And how common are the things they're checking for? There's a lot of different things that can kill you but some stuff isn't much of an issue unless you have a family history of it. One of my friends already gets regular colonoscopies because he has a family history of colon cancer but it wouldn't make sense for everyone to be doing that.

p.s. I was joking about the whole RS in 2035 threads for geriatrics but now I see we're well on our way there! | So that's my attitude towards seeking medical treatment abroad, because it's virtually pointless if I cant have procedures done here.
Everything I get done goes back to my family doctor here could push through shit within the Canadian system with reputable results if there was anything of concern. If you go to Taiwan etc. and they run these tests and have their analysis of said results, the Canadian system isn't going to care what they say, you're going to be at the back of the waiting list to run everything again to actually verify said diagnosis. So travelling for these procedures seems pointless.
I feel the same way about going to Mexico for dental work etc. If I have to travel to get this shit done, basically it means I cant afford it. And the last thing I'd want to be doing is going to some clinic in Mexico and being put under for some veneers or some shit lol..
