I think after the Raptor was successful manufacturers realized you can make an offroad variant with huge markups and people will eat them up even if they never take it offroad.

Seems like “overlanding” is full of people who have never done anything outdoorsy etc. but they get a thrill out of deflating their tires on groomed logging roads and pretending they are in the Baja or some shit lol

Go buy a bunch of brand new gear, rescue equipment, etc. and can’t even start a fire lol

^same thing happens for people with track cars. Upgrades with inspirations to go to the track, but they never go.

Toyota's build quality isn't the same as what earned it its reputation in the 80s and 90s. Friend of mine had a current gen TRD Pro 4Runner and its lack of performance and costly maintenance caused the initial infatuation to fade pretty quickly, only lasted about three years. Another got the new Tundra when it came out and it was riddled with little issues and he had multiple warranty claims. It was also heavy and an absolute whore on gas with the turbo hybrid engine getting worse gas mileage than my 325ci V8 GMC. Brand new $100,000 truck and the speakers rattled and Toyota refused to fix them. He couldn't wait to get rid of it. So.... I wouldn't rush to buy one first year.

Spoiler!
I'm curious to know what kind of costly maintenance your friend had with their 4Runner, mind sharing?

Seems like this can be a mixed bag in that it doesn't always work out that way - eg. Honda's K20C is a gas hog both in EPA numbers and in real life and they would have been better off just sticking with the V6 for both the Accord and RDX if fuel numbers mattered (I average 15mpg with my RDX - heavy city driving). Meanwhile BMW's 2.0T is great on gas but even their 3.0T is great on gas too.

tons for competition in the tent and awning space so prices are a fraction of what it was during lockdown boom

what still doesn't have affordable options are quality attachments like slim racks and platforms

I'm assuming the wait list for the 4Runner is longer than the LC?

Constant brake noise, ABS issues, and subsequent handling problems. The ABS didn't operate properly and would be inconsistent or even locking the tires under hard braking but not actual panic braking. He also noted the interior features and infotainment were cheap, archaic, and frustrating and that the 5000lbs towing capacity was a "complete joke". All in all he wasn't happy with the truck long-term.
