Petey isn't likable in the slightest. Miller and Hughes are the faces of this team.

:heckno: for Z going to free market. What is that fan going to do with that glow in the dark big letter Z ??

68style 06-28-2024 11:09 AM

Boy the Russian experiment has NOT yielded good results:

Podz - Fringe NHL'er at this point
Kuz - Gone
Mik - Gone
Big Z - Going

whitev70r 06-28-2024 11:16 AM

you forgot Tryamkin ... was that his name?

mikemhg 06-28-2024 11:19 AM

Add Bure to that list for the old heads.

Russians don't like playing in Vancouver :lol

68style 06-28-2024 11:24 AM

Haha well there's a whole lot of others, I was sticking to this management team tho.

Anyone remember Chubarov's car still being under Rogers Arena like years after he was gone?

AzNightmare 06-28-2024 11:46 AM

I was pretty confident after the Myers signing, there's no money left on the table for Zadarov. He's not going to take a big discount and Myers didn't take any hometown discount.

Allvin did a pretty good job with the other signings so far, but the Myers one is probably "fair", which means, not good in the context of building a cup contending team.

bobbinka 06-28-2024 12:20 PM

You could still afford Z if you get a cheaper winger in FA, but you'd have to wait until FA to find out before circling back to him, which he likely won't be around long enough for.

They're also in on Tanev, but i don't think that'll work cause he needs term. Talk today about getting Marino from NJD, which would be nice, but i don't see what assets would go the other way.

Mikoyan 06-28-2024 12:20 PM

Zadarov came out publicly against the war in Ukraine and spoke against Putin, so he needs to make those bucks to stay living in America.

68style 06-28-2024 12:58 PM

Tanev is turning 35 just 3 months into the season... he's not getting "term" from anyone. Anything over 3 years would be absolute crazy talk and/or salary cap circumvention.

That's what I mean, even 3 years is too long, but someone out there will give it to him

Can someone explain how Myers at $3M isn't a hometown discount? The comment isn't unique to any one individual. I absolutely disagree with the sentiment, he's literally half the cost now as a veteran RHD. He has the size and understanding of how to be successful with our current coaching staff. In fact, the coaching staff asked for him to be re-signed.

It wasn't a case of signing Myers OR Zadorov. They were trying their hardest to keep both. Big Z wants to get paid the most rather than take a slight discount (like every other UFA who has re-signed so far). No shade, that's just his decision to make. It's exactly what I had been saying had Joshua decided to do the same. Wish you the best of luck, but we need everyone to leave money on the table for the entire team to continue being competitive.

Paying Z $5M+ would have been a mistake and I fully agree with Allvin allowing him to walk at this point. It sucks ass, but it is what it is. He's likely looking for $5.5-6M and term. Huge risk for a dman who until this past postseason has been a 4-5 D at best.

with LTIR, we currently have about $14.5M cap space. Had Z agreed to $5M that would leave $9.5M for a top 6 forward and perhaps some depth on D. There are holes on the lineup yet to fill so this is why management can't overpay to keep one guy. Blueger, Joshua and Myers all left money on the table to return. Z could have done the same.

I get that we all had a huge emotional connection to Z despite his short time here, but we're playing the win-now game and need all the tools we can get to have greater success next year.

He's beloved, people were chanting for him in support when he was struggling.. In the playoffs! I've never seen anything like that before! Usually fans turn on players in that situation; especially Canadian fans.

bobbinka 06-28-2024 02:18 PM

you have to ignore that he was getting $6mil before (thanks Benning). he certainly was not playing like a $6mil man for most of that contract.

i think it was Donnie/Dhali that said $3mil would be what he would've gotten in the open market. so, it's a fair price, but not a discount. Cole got $3mil last year.

bobbinka 06-28-2024 02:21 PM

I just can't see Stamkos leaving Tampa, but man how exciting would that be if Canucks got him in FA

I think Myers at $3M is just his market price, not a hometown discount.

It's half what he made before, but he was super overpaid for that entire contract. Not just 1 year... the entire contract. He's never ever been a $6M a year dman. Keep in mind his age, this is a retirement contract now.

He's improved quite a bit under the current coaching staff, he had some hero moments in the playoffs this year with his nutsack save in Nashville and some big hits, but this contract feels right. I agree with a previous commenter that maybe 2 years was better given his age, but he seems to have managed to stay pretty healthy and play younger than his age thus far.

Ideally on any team I think you want to generally follow a salary structure like this:
1/2 D - $15M
3/4 D - $6M
5/6 D - $3M

Canucks are basically at that now, tho a Tanev signing would skew things slightly as Myers would drop to 3rd pairing.

It's why he got the 3rd year

whitev70r 06-28-2024 02:37 PM

Talk radio saying that Guentzel money now getting ridiculous levels ... > $9M AAV ... Allvin, don't do it.

bobbinka 06-28-2024 02:46 PM

it was always going to be $9mil+

he wanted $8x8 with his prior teams. but once he hits FA, he can only get max 7 yr term, so it'd be in the $9 range.

HonestTea 06-28-2024 04:10 PM

Rumor has it its a 8x8 by Carolina and now its just formalities.

pastarocket 06-28-2024 05:00 PM

There are other forwards available besides Guentzel in free agency.

What about former Canuck Tyler Toffoli?

hard to stomach 6m on a Dman thats on the 3rd pairing
but it seems this guy has a good year or two left in him
good luck Z

and yes anythin over 9m for Jake is insane.

MarkyMark 06-28-2024 06:47 PM

Sucks to lose Z just the size of him was nice having in the playoffs when things got gritty. If the numbers don't make sense not much we can do though.

whitev70r 06-29-2024 06:33 AM

Really quiet year at the draft, no splash, no big names, no big stories.

Iginla, Jerome's son got picked up by Utah.

Did Canucks even have a1st round draft ...
