Van gets Vincent Desharnais 2 x $2M

spoon.ek9 07-01-2024 02:02 PM

As much as people wanted us to make a big splash, I'm sort of relieved we didn't bring the dump truck of cash to overpay some of these old(er) veterans. It's definitely anti-climactic but hopefully in the long run, these are the smart, value signings we look back on as genius moves by management.

Also, considering the kind of money being thrown around the league today, the contracts we signed beforehand are all looking great in terms of value. Depth and options is what we need for a long run, and that's what we got. Yes, one can argue we are lacking some top notch star level offense but I think they did the best they could.

Never forget, Benning "ran out of time" in these types of situations and fucked us over for years with shit contracts. There's also trades during the season that can be made, just like they did last year. Let's see how things pan out!

What will i do for the next 3 months though?

spoon.ek9 07-01-2024 02:36 PM

I'm sure the media/fans will find something to complain about over the summer lol. As is the norm around this market....

TjAlmeida 07-01-2024 03:11 PM

So many gross overpayments or term handed out for players 30+. I don’t mind debrusk, he’ll be 28 I think in October. Only cringe from the canucks was Desharnais 2x2, but maybe they feel they have no viable depth in the AHL to lean on so may as well keep a capable 7th d.

spoon.ek9 07-01-2024 04:10 PM

I have faith in our coaching staff getting the most of who we picked up today. DeBrusk is said to have stats similar to JT before he came here. Hopefully he can take a step forward with an elevated role. He's also done some good work in the playoffs which includes scoring on Toronto in a game 7.

68style 07-01-2024 05:23 PM

Yah I definitely took note that Debrusk has basically been a PPG player the last 2 playoffs for Boston

bobbinka 07-01-2024 05:29 PM

Chef PA likes them big D, bottom 4 are like 6'4, 6'5, 6'7, and 6'8 i think

The Official 2024/2025 Canucks & NHL Thread

“I think July 1 is an interesting day, but it's also a scary day,” Allvin told reporters in an afternoon press conference at Rogers Arena. “And I think we were pretty good here today in terms of managing our money and getting, hopefully, good value out of the players we got.

“We felt that we needed to be a faster team in that transition game, and by adding Sherwood, Heinen and DeBrusk, they all can skate.”

Overall, I think that Allvin did a good job with the free agent signings.

You have DeBrusk who has size, speed, and offensive skill to play with Petey.

The team’s speed is better for the transition game like what Allvin mentioned to reporters yesterday.

When the opposing team turns over the puck in the neutral zone, our forwards have more speed and skill to go on the counterattack for a scoring chance.

Our defence has more size and speed with Desharnais.

Canucks hoping Debrusk could breakout like Hyman on a very friendly contract

im hopeful too lol

Liquid_o2 07-02-2024 10:56 AM

If Debrusk notches 25 goals on a consistent basis and plays his strong defensive game he is known for throughout the contract, I see it as a solid signing. Really happy with the forward signings. Heinan is going to be a stud on the 3rd/4th lines. Local kid, fans are going to be happy with him.

Defense is looking suspect though. I don't know if GMPA is going to go after a top 4 guy in a trade to shore it up - but I am nervous going into the season with the group we have now unless someone steps up big time. Desharnais and Forbort are both #6. I would not want a 3rd pairing made up of the two of them. Really wish we were able to sign Matt Roy and move Myers down to the third pair.

All I know is its about time we have a competent GM that's not over paying players on July 1st. I'm honestly really happy with the signings that were made. I think Debrusk has a lot more to offer and playing with Petey should hopefully help both of them out. I saw how Hughes was very happy we signed Sherwood since he was such a pest during the Preds series. Yes the D still needs work but they are still just as big and even bigger on the back end which is fantastic. Overall this is a great start and I cant wait to see what else Allvin has up his sleeve.

-grading of Allvin's free agent signings.

Gritty winger who is good along the boards and responsible defensively, sounds good to me. That's basically the Panthers.

As long as Desharnais isnt wearing any sort of orange, i won't call him a pylon :QQ:

We got a forrest around Quinn, here's hoping our PK is rehashed, reorganised and ready to defend

pastarocket 07-03-2024 03:58 AM

According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, Casey DeSmith has signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Stars worth $3 million ($1 million AAV). DeSmith will replace Scott Wedgewood as the backup to Jake Oettinger.

Bye bye Casey.

Heinen is a really good penalty killer, having him and Joshua out there to kill penalties will take some minutes off Miller hopefully... I know some teams like to employ skill guys on the PK but I prefer they aren't eating pucks on shot blocks tbh, willing to sacrifice the 3-4 extra SHG per season that come from having them out there.

spoon.ek9 07-03-2024 03:21 PM

my biggest concern right now is also the defense. we are lacking in puck moving D which could come back to bite us. size and PK ability aside, this d core seems to be lacking offensive punch unless someone has a breakout year.

Hondaracer 07-03-2024 04:33 PM

Glad they didn’t commit to similar deals that Z and Lindholm got, too long

And the risk was too great with Z that you slow down even more in the latter years

bobbinka 07-03-2024 06:10 PM

There's still 2.7mil in cap space. Offload a league minimum contract during the season and can still pick up 3.5mil player

68style 07-04-2024 06:58 AM

Canucks going into a season with cap space, unheard of!

So elephant in the room........... Boeser is a UFA at the end of this season

whitev70r 07-04-2024 08:10 AM

Tarasenko ends up in Detroit. Tiffoli ends up in San Jose.

I mean if you get a multiple year $XM offer anywhere in the NHL you should be thankful ... but someone was posing, why or why not go to free agency. Well, sometimes after the first round of 'musical chairs' ... you get left with not so preferable teams with money to spend.

If they want to keep him, should be able to afford the raise. Only other UFAs are suter at 1.6, forbert at 1.5, and 3 league minimum contracts.

You also need to factor in the OEL buy out money that goes up next year as well.

whitev70r 07-04-2024 08:51 AM

Speaking of ... what a trajectory for OEL.

Gets cushy buyout from Canucks, gets decent contract with Panthers (double dip), wins the friggin SC, then now has what ... a 4 yr contract with the Leafs (and still double dipping from Canucks). Although I think buyouts, you get it all at once, is that right?

Oh to be a avg D man who gets a big contract one time ... OEL should be sending Christmas present to Benning every year.
