This should be an option year, so if they want to keep him he'll be around at least one more season. Usually now is when they'd extend him, and if more teams are bidding, he'll have leverage in that negotiation. Also losing a head coach means a lot more than just one guy, so he has even more leverage. Changing coaches is not that simple - every Canucks fan is very aware of this.

But coaches aren't included in salary cap. so it basically doesn't matter to fans how much they get paid - it's up to the owner. If they let him go simply because another owner offered more, blowing up the entire system, that's not a great look. But again, Canucks fans know all about this. So get ready.

AznNightmare ... are you that simple? Tochet's agent to Canucks mgmt, "If you don't pony up, I'll go to the Flyers."

Even though a coach's $$$ doesn't contribute to cap hit, you think Aquaman wants to pay top dollar for coach? Torts was getting $4M/yr at Philly. Tochet $2.75M/yr.

I just don't know how long it would take and will it actually work. I mean all EP40 knows is his hockey knowledge growing up playing in Sweden. IMO you are better off trading EP40, and getting a hockey player that you don't need to "reprogram."

If there was ever a time to trade him for good value, it was before the signing.
Anything we get now would just end up hurting us. I'm for keeping him and take the chance that he can become a star again, he's got the skill, but not the attitude.

murd0c 03-28-2025 09:42 AM

I don't think its about the attitude because he has some, I think it's more about heart when it comes to Petey, He needs to get his mind straight in the off season and come back with no bullshit and play like we all know he can play.

If I was a billionaire, yeah.
I mean sure, every dollar matters, but I would think managing within a salary cap probably plays more of a factor than the actual dollars players are being paid.

If there's no salary cap for coaches, if you want the guy, you pay up. Unless he's asking for $10mil or something outrageous. The whole team and staff has been built around his system, so if they want Tocch but he's asking for $1-2 mil too much and that's the deal breaker, that just seems kind of dumb IMO. But I guess easy to say for me, not my money.

Don't forget in Tocchet's first season FA was still paying Boudreau and Green... literally $7M out of his pocket to coaches with 2 of them being gone already. I'd be pretty fed up if I was him on that particular aspect lol!

bobbinka 03-28-2025 01:01 PM

if he leaves, it's not because of money.... FA has always ponied up. we're a salary cap team. Gillis wanted the fancy facilities and sleep study stuff. There's the OEL buyout. Having multiple coaches on payroll for the same year like 68style said. Rutherford expanded the organization, hiring more AGMs and staff. Tocchet got to expand the coaching staff. The only thing FA can't buy is the Stanley Cup.

A dedicated practice facility should be pretty high on their priority list. It makes a big difference to players and coaches. Obviously not #1 priority right now but it has to be something in the works if we are serious about being contenders.

bobbinka 03-28-2025 02:41 PM

I wonder what the complications are with the practice facility, because it's been talked about for sooooooooooo long. Articles from 2012:

Owner Francesco Aquilini opened up the bank for Gillis, giving him a $3-million dressing room overhaul, a top-line audio-visual system and the expanded scouting staff he’d wanted. A $50-million waterfront practice facility on False Creek is in the works. A team of military sleep experts oversees the players’ rest patterns, advising the front office on everything from when individual players should be napping to whether the team—whose gruelling travel schedule criss-crosses multiple time zones—flies home immediately after a road game, or spends the night, maximizing rest.
I could see the issue with False Creek given the uncertainty of redevelopment between the landowners and city... but how have they not found literally any other piece of land to build a new building in 13 years?

I agree. Why is taking the Canucks well over a decade to still not have their own practice rink?

Doesn’t Aquaman’s business empire including construction work?

spoon.ek9 03-28-2025 03:39 PM

I think it was Canucks Army who just recently saying we could sure use a DeBrusk scoring streak right about now lol

68style 03-28-2025 03:59 PM

I don’t see us making it no matter what we do… both the Wild and Blues won last night right back to 5pts back the maths are terrible.

Blues have played 2 more games than us before tonight but still… the 12 OTL have killllllled us this season.

teggy604 03-28-2025 04:08 PM

Last few games are against teams canucks can beat. Next few games are against top teams. Although they might just let vancouver win. They already made the playoffs and can rest their top guys. And maybe playing vancouver is better than playing st Louis in the playoffs.
