That said, I got a follow up email 4 hrs after the interview asking to schedule in a quick call for tmr around 6AM, likely to discuss salary range. I'm pretty concerned about being offered sub 60K since while I like the idea of this job, I won't be able to afford the pay cut.
Aside from salary, everything else looks decent?
I still don't love the idea for banked hours instead of OT tho. While it's not expected, I should probably ask if it's banked at 1.5 or 1:1.
It's 3 weeks of vacation + 2 weeks christmas. Extended health (only at 50% coverage tho), 8 sick days (instead of the standard 5), federal gov stat days, and 35 hour work weeks.
I also don't love the idea of using my personal devices as work devices (ie. cell phone) but they pay $130/mo for home office expenses. Tbh I'd rather them provide me a laptop and a cell phone and I'd just write off home office expenses instead.
Travel comp is per federally standards - accom at < $200/night, per diem, mileage at CRA rates.
Other expenses to meet clients or what not is reimbursed every month + one week, but I don't have the cash flow for this LOL. Would be nice to churn some cards tho. | Here's my take, for what it's worth.
Paying up front and expensing later is very standard/common.
For employess that have cash flow issues, you can sometimes request a cash advance prior to accruing expenses if finance dept allows it.
Your only other option is asking them to provide you with a company card that they pay directly, but you don't see very often because of the liability risk.
Based on your description, my guess for a salary range is $70k - $90k? As you are new to the industry, you're probably going to land in the lower half of that. If you wanted to negotiate, you could conside asking for a variable/bonus component based on hitting certain metrics. Less risk for them, they may be more amicable to it.
This sounds like a job with lots of travel required with working events and client entertaining, so I think asking or negotiating around OT and banked hours is a turnoff. Either you're ready to work the hours required, or I'd hire someone else who isn't going to ask for stuff like that. It's not a union role, it's salaried corporate work. Instead I'd ask them what their policies are around work life balance and see what they say.
Personally I prefer using my own devices and I think $130/mo is super generous. That's just me though. You can still write off anything above that.
Here is the federal gov't schedule for travel expenses. https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-age...ndix.html#toc2 |

Sounds like they want to set him up as a contractor rather than employee.
My wife worked like this for a few years. All the downsides of being an employee, with all the downsides of being a contractor. Good times.

It's official. I resigned from my job today, effective immediately. I know that burning bridges isn't the ideal way to go, especially since I've worked with them for a total of 6 years (contracting + employee). While I find the work I do fulfilling and I'd like to see the processes that I've built continued, I really didn't want to go in and get harassed/berated for 40 hours being their emotional punching bag. As such, I feel like there's no point pretending I'll be there for Jan 2 to Jan 8, when I'm not. I was procrastinating on giving formal notice because I was so scared of the consequences (they'll probably try to call me, text me, show up at my house, etc), but I guess it has to be done.
I've been off weed for about two months now - basically since the beginning of this thread - and I've gotten some clarity/mental health is a lot better (weed helped make the frustration of the day go away). I've come to realize that a lot of the feelings of imposter syndrome/unworthiness comes from my job.
I'm responsible for a lot, yet my boss constantly questions the need for my role. This isn't an act of revenge to show him "how much I'm really needed" cause nothing comes from that. Hell, I quit. What I mean is, I had to leave the toxic environment of him constantly breathing down my neck or berating me with questions of things outside of my scope of work (ie. why doesn't the internet work).
This also isn't a "this happens everyday at workplaces" or a "your generation is soft" situation. I've put up with this since 2018, enough is enough, I don't think generalizing generations should be a valid point in standing up for yourself and leaving a bad situation.
At most workplaces, HR isn't the owner of the company, who constantly treats everyone like a slave for a lack of better words. I get yelled at for needing to go to the washroom more than once a day. And no, I'm not using my phone in there I just had to shit. Plus, phones are supposed to be locked up in our desks, with random checks (they need to use our personal phones to call [harass] a customer).
At most workplaces, you aren't being berated to the point of having a panic attack and walking out for a break. This is a constant scenario for me and there are plenty of witnesses over the years to prove this too. Hell, I've tried to tell them that this isn't acceptable behavior. But their attitude towards this is that we're paying you, so you're gonna sit there and take it - we own you.
I did however offer to assist remotely, but I don't expect to get paid for it. They'll weasel their way out of that one too. I've seen it happen to contractors and vice versa that we use. Even when I was contracting them in the beginning, they would use anything to get a "20-40%" discount. I should have known better.
Anyway, I'm excited for new beginnings as the Head of Member Relations for Western Canada at the new place. I'm confident that I'll be able to learn quickly and do the work effectively, but I think undoing the trauma I've gotten from this past workplace is going to take a lot of work. I didn't realize that a lot of the things I've grown accustomed to .. isn't normal practice.
Also, I've finished my 2024 Expenses breakdown. Are you guys ready to lose your minds over my lack of financial literacy?

You were always so knowledgeable when it comes to accounting and tax topics and you drive a Type R, so I always assumed you were making 6 figures because you should be. I’m glad things are on the up for you so go make that bread!

You know what's funny? I'm an Operations Manager. I went to this saying I don't want to do anything related to accounting, cause this job was my out from accounting. Yet somehow, I'm responsible for year end, coordinating with 3 external accountants (bc they can't take one person's advice) and implementing project based accounting.
I make suggestions like hey maybe we shouldn't try to write off your jet ski because it's RISKY and I get yelled at for several hours straight. And if I don't give my input, they get pissy about it too. There's no winning. Give my input and they try to forcefully change my opinion on it. Don't give me input and they relentlessly ask me for it despite us both well knowing it's not going to end well. It's like they're looking for a fight.
All I tried to do is present them with the risks that I know quite too well about... how would I know why the CRA would audit a certain account? I just know that they do from experience.
Or more recently, he wanted me to tell the external accountants our inventory value at a significantly devalued amount. I wouldn't do it and got berated. If you want to commit tax fraud, by all means do it with your email account and your signature. Keep my name out of it.
The pay as noted in the previous posts isn't much better than my current job. But I'm hoping that my responsibilities will reflect my pay or at least I'll be treated better.

Leaving a toxic work place is always a win -- even if you have to take a slight pay cut.
Off to a good start for 2025!

I'm glad you're making personal and professional changes to improve your situation. Most healthy and sustainable businesses do not exhibit those questionable practices you've shared, so staying there will only limit your potential and hinder your career goals.
One thing I'm sure you have from your last job is grit and problem-solving resourcefulness. Skills like that always come in handy regardless of what job you're at.
All the best for 2025!

Grats man! Good on you for leaving. The phone thing is crazy, I had a boomer polish guy at my old place that always gave me the side eye when I get calls on my personal phone. I was traumatized to even check my messages during my whole shift. Some how I managed to stay at the place for 6+ years

Guys. I'm absolutely terrified of getting the notification on my phone for the email response that I'm gonna get to this resignation. It's not supposed to be this anxiety inducing right?

Off to a good start for 2025! | That was me at my first full time job. It was toxic as hell.
The manager was useless.
The most senior member of the team was always trying usurp the manager. He was also trying to hold on to a ton of things that he didn't understand or can't operate just so he seemed important. We called him out for it and he had to let it go.
The rest of the team was equally as useless, but at least they were just useless and not ambitious AND useless.
The pay was terrible, I was barely making ends meet after I moved out
I bought my MS3 before I moved out because I thought I was going to be living at home. I regretted buying the car for the whole year I worked at that place.
I got a 67% raise jumping to my next job. I was respected. The team was happy instead of bickering all the time. I didn't have to commute to Richmond and back everyday.
It was probably one of my happiest years of my career.
The other happiest year was when I met the best manager I had and we formed, imo, the best 3 man team I've worked at.

Why even acknowledge their response? They suck shit and you resigned... I'd just block them. Who needs to read any of their shit anymore?
Like breaking up with a terrible gf, block and move on. Don't need to fuck your mind up giving them power by acknowledging their words in any way or trying to make them feel better.

They have no power over you anymore. What can they do, fire you? Who cares if they are pissed. You don't like them, so no need to concern yourself with the opinions of those you don't even like. They have nothing left to worry you with, so don't worry.

And if they drop me next month it doesn't matter. There's other work out there and plenty of people who are less skilled/right out of school/just moved from a place of dubious worker reputation.
