I would've trolled to see what the retention offer is despite never taking it.

You can use other coworkers for references anyways, although no one ever checks mine

^ What he said. They can pay you contractor rates for work. If they have a habit of not paying then ask them to pay upfront before you start any work, and only work until the allotted amount of time.

Now for the fun part.. there has to be some kind of masochism here. I'm used to being yelled at work, on track and here.

I'll be aiming to cut down on the following spending categories either due to circumstances changing (WFH) or it's absolutely retarded (meals):
- Automotive:Gas $4,113.37 (WFH now so hopefully cut by at least half)
- Banking:Bank Fees $388.33 (I'm not sure if I could cancel my bank account but keep a LOC with that bank)
- Charity: $372 (Auto charge... need to figure out how to cancel this lol)
- Fix FK8: $2900 (One-time occurrence)
- Meals $5,011.16 (wtf)
- Meals:Work BFast $668.07 (Usually a XL Tea + Bagel/English Muffin/BLT/Farmer's Wrap -> Most likely a transition to grocery exp.)
- Track Day $3,987.44

Since everyone loves to guesstimate track day expenses, here are the actual expenses for 6 track days (3 VIMC, 2 Mission, 1 Ridge).
- Admission $1,337.00
- AirBnb (Ridge) $ 94.13
- Entertainment (Ridge) $ 29.16
- Ferry $ 535.56
- Gas $ 571.59
- Maint. $1,311.30
- Meals (Ridge) $ 108.70

Vices shockingly was not as bad as I thought it was:
Nicotine - $765.52
Weed - $629.47

Just from the diagram above you can see that you’re spend on automotive is matching your mortgage. Its too expensive.

It's more actually if you include all car related items:

- Automotive: 16,400
- Track days: 4,000
- Fix FK8: 2,900
Total: $23,300 (39% of his take home!!!!!!)

Also, what's up with the $3400 on life insurance? Are you paying for other people's policies? My wife and I carry over $2m of coverage and we pay less than that despite being in our 40s.

Yeah I left that out because track days are out for 2025, Fix FK8 is one time cost that hopefully I don't encounter again.

Fixed costs in the auto category are:

Loan - $8,408.40
ICBC - $2,222.62

Is yours term? Mine's whole life. The one where you pay for 20 years and never pay it again. Being a smoker might be a cause for a premium here.

Like we've been saying from day 1, cars gotta go. Even more now that you're WFH.
Does he really need life insurance? Especially that expensive plan, made some Sunlife/manulife/MLM salesperson happy.

i have zero bank fees and i use cibc with no limits that i'm aware of?
keep a 6k balance and pay nothing.
i realize you could probably pay $15/mo in fees and take that 6k and invest it and potentially make more, but meh.

otherwise when i was with tangerine years ago other than few minor annoyances i was pretty happy with paying nothing. the minor annoyances were that i had to wait 3 business days for a bank draft to be mailed to me, and that basically i didn't have a relationship with anyone at the branch i could just call up any time for any reason. i think 99% of the time you don't need these things enough to warrant the fees, especially $342/year, that seems especially high.

I've never had bank fees in my life. You need to cut that out and save the almost $400. The basic bank plans only require $2k in your account, and the premium plans require $5k. That premium account also includes a premium cc most of the time so it balances out. My premium bank account fee is $30/m which you are still pay more than.

If you can cut out the nicotine and weed that's another $1400.

Also do you not drink? It not kudos. I think I go through about $350 worth of alcohol a year.

My life insurance isn't that high and I'm significantly older. If you can kick the smoking habit, see if you can get it reassessed. I have both full life and also term insurance. Unless your full life is a very high amount.

Even if you eat well at home, it's still going to come down to being much cheaper than eating out. Healthier too. Alternative would be using services like fresh prep or whatever to cut down on time spent shopping, but your cost would likely to much closer to eating out, but probably healthier still.
Eating out is coming in at around at least $20 per meal if you aren't absolutely scraping the bottom of the barrel doing coupons at subway or whatever.
Fresh Prep - it's the best one out of the three we used, but also the most expensive. You are looking at around $15 a meal depending on promotions and bulk order discounts.
Buying your own and cooking would be around $10 a meal average, more or less dependant on how extravagant you are.

Are you making more or less with the new job?

I would not cut out trackdays completely. But instead of 5, do 2? I only do Mission once a year, of course I want to do more, but between time and financial commitments, 1 makes sense for me.

Since you have a mortgage, LOC and presumably a credit card you shouldn't have any banking fees. I have all my stuff with RBC and they charge me a monthly fee but then refund it.

Gas you should be able to look up the distance of your old commute and work out how much you'll save on gas being WFH but it's likely a lot of it.

If you cut those and trim down the meals as well you can likely free up a good 10% of your budget just from that.

Of course that's all easy to say here just looking at numbers. I just went through my apending for the past year and it's not exactly sunshine and rainbows either lol.

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have any minimum balance requirement because my balance is all over the place thanks to work. It'd be worth talking to the bank about at least.

edit: it's called a MultiProduct rebate. They charge me $11.95 every month and then immediately refund it.

if not able to keep a min balance then definitely just switch your bank to a credit union. easiest way to save $30 every month

Nope, I don't drink. Well.. I make 2 exceptions/year but I don't pay for alcohol. A few years ago I got a stomach lining issue following the vax + binge drinking during lockdown, so alcohol had to be cut out completely.

Tho I am happy to report that I've been completely sober from weed for about two months and I feel a lot better mentally. It's nice to be able to think clearly. Kinda felt like a fenty zombie for a bit.

I wonder if it is the smoking that is resulting in this high of a life insurance premium. At the time, ten years ago, the difference wasn't that drastic, and my rate hasn't changed.

I hold two policies:

CanadaLife - $1014
Equitable - $2,266.04

I don't remember why I carry it.. aside from I've been paying it for the last ten years and it feels like a waste to cancel it now that im at 50% paid.

I think I was coming close to $35-80/meal depending on where I was. I like appy + main lol. And then there's the opposite spectrum with AYCE.. but man that's gotten a lot more expensive than in the 2010s.

Part of it is also the smoking weed thing, which by not doing, I'm hoping will help with not overordering or wanting to go out and eat all the time. Tho I'm starting to realize this probably has smt to do with mental state of being as well.

In 2020, I was doing keto (which I'm tempted to do again), it was around $6.23/meal. Tho I was buying the cheapest of meats at Freshco.

I think a happy medium number would be 2-3, but at one track. Doing the track roulette isn't it. It takes me 1 full day to get reacquainted from prev year, so it makes more sense (and I find more fulfillment) in focusing on one track.

Yep, I don't have enough cash flow to keep the minimum balance required - I think for BMO it's 6K? I primarily bank with Simplii anyway, I had the BMO open for investments that I liquidated a few years ago and then they gave me a LOC. I'm not sure if I can retain the LOC, but cancel the bank account.

You can borrow against it early? I thought I'd have to finish the 20 years lol.

Tho borrowing against it isn't that much better than the LOC. It's still a debt.

You could borrow against it, but like you said it's still debt, and you pay interest. It just acts as a collateral. It's not a whole lot different than borrowing against your home.

Smoking will definitely make your premiums higher as it's much higher risk. Ditto if you carry CI coverage

In 2020, I was doing keto (which I'm tempted to do again), it was around $6.23/meal. Tho I was buying the cheapest of meats at Freshco.
I still eat out like I do when I was in university most of the time. Get the main, don't get an appy most of the time. Only occasionally do I get a drink with it, usually cause we are doing something special do I do appy/main/drink

Chinese cafe drink included meals notwithstanding

Cheap crap but fresh meat is still better than canned meat any day.

After tax or before tax? Makes a huge difference.

Then pick a track and budget it in. You'd be kicking yourself if your friends are hitting the track but you don't have budget for it.

I'm not sure if I can retain the LOC, but cancel the bank account.
Should make this your main priority and get the premium credit card that fits your needs, whether it's cash back or points that go towards something that matters. My cash back card + the fee savings easily makes about 15% or more of the $5k deposit I have.

Even if you subtract out the normal cash back value I'm still easily 10%.

I wouldn't care about BMO taking your LOC away as most banks will grant you an LOC if you ask, the question is the interest rate. If you have you mortgage with a major bank, they'll give you an LOC anyways.
