Aware Me on Relays My dad's Genesis Coupe has a bad fan relay. It should be this guy https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Hyund.../dp/B00BJMFNPA I called a friend at Hyundai but there was two problems. 1. They are backordered 2. They want $90 + tax for ONE relay, and I need two. So I'm not strongly mechanically inclined, but I'm pretty sure Lordco would carry something equivalent. The relay itself has no markings on it other than a part number. How do I know a generic relay would have the correct specs for this? Or is any relay that has the same pinout would have the same spec? |
Buy a new car. This one is done. |
No, relays have voltage and amp ratings. Think of them as spicy switches. Your fuse box lid will usually have AMP ratings for said relay. 12v of course. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/123817355578 12v 50A Are you aware now |

We were thinking of picking up a i3 which means no gas, great sightlines, easy ingress and egress. But he won't give up the sports car. His other argument was, he's not driving much, and he's probably not driving for much longer. Dropping 20k on a car so he can drive another 5 years doesn't make a whole lot of sense to him financially. Quote:
That's my problem, I am so ignorant about electronics, I don't even know what to look for |
Found another picture that showed some ID markings: https://www.hyundaipartsdeal.com/res...bbc7bb87a5.jpg Any automotive plug-in 12VDC, 50A relay should work. The pinouts on automotive relays are pretty standardized. Pins 85,86 are to the relay coil, 30 for incoming power, and 87 outgoing power. |
I can't believe you're buying Rep relays |
Try also RockAuto.com! :) |
The pinout looks standard, there's a chance they did something screwy but I don't think that's very common these days. If they used a standard relay for the fan did they use the same for something else? You might be able to just yoink them from the horn or something less essential for testing. Like others said the main thing is match or exceed the current rating. Don't buy something like that on Amazon though. Tossing that part number into RockAuto and they have genuine Hyundai for $58 or Hella for $8. Edit: The Hella shows the pinout, compare it to the pinout on one at the store but that looks conventional to me. Just check the fuse box to see if there's a space for the extra pin most generic relays have. Hella: https://www.rockauto.com/info/806/933332531.MAIN.jpg Generic: https://abra-electronics.com/images/...ed/169/24v.png Edit 2: looking at it again the Hella relay has a protection resistor as well. I'm not sure if the Hyundai one has that or not but it might be worth at least calling around to try and get a proper aftermarket one first before trying a fully generic one. |

Why the fuck does it have to break when it's borderline freezing and raining.... :yuno: |
is he still driving this "sports" car even in this weather? he's a brave old man. I hope you got him some decent tires. |
He's on winters right now, and during summer he's on Michelin AS4, all good stuff none of that snowdragon BS lol I just checked the relays, the fan is the only one that's 50a. All the other relays are 30 or lower so I'm gonna go buy 2 new relays to test. |
At least in this weather the fan is less critical. If this happened in August it'd be a lot worse. |
Of course no one has a relay in Vancouver. West Can said they'll have one tmr, matches what I need except it's rated for 70amp |
Lordco, Worldpac, crappy tire, Lee's eletronics. |

I did drop by OD today, but for a different reason. Ended up getting my relays from my dad's mechanic friend, got the Hella ones for $20 each. |
Put the car back together last night after the kids went to bed. Car started today, battery wasn't drained. Dad went to pick up my son from school, when he came home the fan was working correctly. Job done, thanks all! |
Excellent. Well done. Still should have bought him a new car. Then you steal it when he croaks. Gt3 beetles make a perfect daily for a 70 year old ah bak. |
