Crapped out during install. Sent from my SM-G781W using Tapatalk |
lol crap! didnt even survived the install eh... |
I find Amazon ones are hit and miss, if you need canbus. More $ but much easier returns than AliExpress. Like 80% of the fogs that say are canbus aren't, and causes bulb out light or flickers and doesn't stay on. |
4 Month Ownership report on the E550 old man car no one cares about: Couldn't be happier. Still looking forward to every drive. Replaced all fluids / Completed typical maintenance. Only issues I've had so far are a few small oil leaks from the rear cam plugs, and a thermostat failing open. Next up; Find a deal on C63 AMG brakes, and good tires! https://i.imgur.com/NSzExjk.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/BEJtTad.jpeg Anyone have a Radar detector in their daily? I can't believe I have gone this long without one. Scored a Uniden R4 on marketplace, highly recommend unless you can find an R8 on the low! |
Are radar detectors still effective nowadays with laser? I thought by the time it goes off it’s too late. |
How much did all that cost ? Thermostat. Cams. Fluids ? I shudder even thinking about it if you went to the dealership |
It's this the turbo one or na? |
You need a Laser jammer, not a radar detector. Unless you live in the sticks, no one uses radar anymore. |
Also, my impression is that nowadays, people rely on reportings / sightings from Waze instead of radar detectors to tell where the police traps are. And that would obviously help you with a bunch of other functions associated with getting to places as well. |

@noclue Detection range depends on circumstances but here is a graph I found on the Radar forums @Traum I run Waze as well, but this has a built-in app that others can Mark traps with (dedicated button the detector as well). Thing is, how many people actually use a Uniden detector lol. More likely to get a notification through Waze. https://www.vortexradar.com/wp-conte...e-8-24-21.webp @Badhoz Yeahhhh it was done at the dealership Lol. Fortunately I have employee rates on parts / labor. Every single fluid, 16 spark plugs, Pan-out service on the Transmission, Rear Diff, Oil leaks (Rear Cam Plugs are about a 30 min job, Oil Filter Housing leak) Replace Coolant reservoir (it was getting brittle), and V Belt. Ran me $2100. Thermostat failed last week, $250 part and $250 in labor. @JDMDreamz this one is the prefacelift non-turbo 5.5L M273 V8. I didn't want a turbo one, read that they have issues. |
Holy shit bro. 2k for that !? (I wonder how much it would be if you didn’t get special pricing) Even with dealer rates this thing sounds like it’s gonna be pricey like a Maserati or Alfa…. It’s a gorgeous merc but this is exactly why these cars drop half its msrp as soon as its warranty is up.its giving me PTSD just thinking about it |

WA on the i5, waze is more than enough. I don't drive the speed limit, but I'm also hyper aware of my surroundings. Also, I always use toll roads when I'm in the US.. kind of a crazy feeling blasting down the seattle expressway - 6 lanes empty its just you and the boys. |

Also, my cost on Genuine parts is definitely still more than aftermarket from Lordco / Online from places like FCP Euro. About half of that bill was on parts / fluids which didn't seem to out of the ordinary. Definitely doesn't use those $20 Gates branded Honda thermostats unfortunately lol. To your point, we normal folk get to enjoy these cars fully bottomed out at the depreciation curve, and if you choose the right one, maybe you'll get to sell it for the same a few years from now. You'll just lose the maintenance you paid (but fingers crossed, no major issues, and I do not anticipate to do all the bigger maintenance items again until another 100k kms roughly have passed). If I really wanted, I would do these jobs myself but in my situation I would have to wait until the Summer months... which I am trying to change as I get older. Most people like to DIY and can save on the labor making modern-classic euro ownership a fine thing! Still into this thing less than any Used Camry / TLX / Lexus of the same era Lol. |
Honestly, props to you bro. This is like unchartered territory, but essentially the new equivalent of owning an E46 in 2017. It's shocking that the E550 is a 15 year old car now. To me it doesn't feel like 15 years, but I guess technically soon are OG FRS/BRZs. |

Yup, crazy to think... the SLS AMG debuted in 2010 too... MINI Countryman... Nissan Juke / Leaf... all turn 15 this year lol. |
TopSecret you should report back after a few months for how useful that detector actually is When i had one 10 years ago, (passport escort i think), it would give off false alarms, go off when theres cops cruising nearby, but also catch traps about half the time. On a sea to sky cruise you would get pinged like 3-4 times each way, with no cops in sight. |
A laser detector is useless, if you pick up the laser, you have already been tagged. It will just tell you, you are about to get a ticket because the gun was pointed at you. Lasers don't spread like radar. A jammer on the other hand, gives you a few secs to slow down before it allows them to get a reading. Vancouver uses Dragon Eye laser guns. The states still use some radar, but it's not legal in some states so research before you run around with one. |
In that case, time to look into Laser Jammers ! I have caught two radar gun speed checks in Coquitlam already. I didn't know that Vancouver uses Laser, thanks for sharing that. |

Laser detector gives you warning to pull handbrake and do a 180, run away. |
